Contribution to the Idaho Catholic Appeal As Catholics we are called to a part of the One Body in Christ. This calling goes beyond serving the needs of individual parishes in our local area, and ourselves. We are called to serve the statewide, national and universal church as part of one, holy, catholic and apostolic community. We are called to build a church that teaches and nourishes its many and varied people both young and old, into a faith-based fellowship centered on the teachings of Jesus. We are reminded of this call to respond to the needs of the broader church by the words of St. Paul: So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all, but especially to those who belong to the family of faith.

At stake is how much control college administrators will have over student college newspapers. Staff members of the Governor's State University Innovator say that college officials exercised unconstitutional prior restraint over the newspaper. Organizations that fight for the First Amendment rights of student newspapers, like the Illinois College Association and the Student Press Law Center , say that if the staff of the Innovator loses their battle then college administrators will have the same powers over college papers that the US Supreme Court gave high school administrators in a 1989 case that originated in the St. Louis Area: Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier.

Idaho State Board of Education Addresses Several Issues at its May Meeting
The Idaho State Board of Education considered several items on a full agenda at its May meeting, which typically is reserved for a retreat and strategic planning. Highlights from the day included: Discussion on charter schools - At the April meeting, Board President Blake Hall assigned a subcommittee to look at charter schools in the State of Idaho and prepare a report to be submitted to the Governor. At yesterday's meeting, Laird Stone, Board member and chair of the subcommittee, gave an update and said a full report will be ready for the December 2003 meeting. The Board listened to presentations regarding charter school issues that may require a solution before the end of the year. Mr. Stone said his committee will consider the issues and, where necessary, have recommendations for short-term solutions at the next meeting. University of Idaho affiliation with the Sun Belt Conference - After much thought and deliberation, the Board voted, 5-3, to authorize the president of the University of Idaho, or his designee, to pursue and accept an invitation as an all-sports member of the Sun Belt Conference.
