IDAHO

  • Home to the jagged peaks of the Sawtooth, the roar of the Snake Wild River and the red canyons of Owyhee, Idaho is second only to Alaska in wilderness. Two-thirds of Idaho's 83,000 square miles are public lands. More than 40% of Idaho is covered with trees. Idaho also has 80 recognized mountain ranges. This makes it the most heavily forested and most mountainous of all the Rocky Mountain states. In addition to the four million acres of already-designated wilderness, there are more than nine million acres of wildlands that qualify for wilderness protection.

Explore the US Back to Map Idaho Higher Education Idaho has six accredited colleges and universities and four community colleges. Idaho's four-year state institutions are the University of Idaho at Moscow, Idaho State University at Pocatello, Lewis-Clark State College at Lewiston, and Boise State University at Boise. The state's three community colleges are the College of Southern Idaho at Twin Falls, Eastern Idaho Technical College at Idaho Falls, and North Idaho College at Coeur D'Alene. Private schools are Albertson College of Idaho at Caldwell, and Northwest Nazarene College at Nampa. Ricks College is a community college operated by the Mormon Church. Geography Climate Overall, Idaho's climate is fairly temperate owing to two main factors: warm winds from the Pacific Ocean; and mountains in the eastern part of the state that hold back cold winter winds from the north and east. However, in the mountainous areas frigid temperatures can occur. Elevation plays an important role in temperature differences across the state. In Boise, temperatures range from an average of 24° C in July to an average of -3° C in January. In Idaho Falls, the average July temperature is 21° C, while the average January temperature is -9° C. Annual precipitation varies throughout the state, from less than 25 cm of precipitation in some areas to as much as 508 cm of snow on the highest mountains.

Introduction Located in one of the least traveled regions of the United States, Idaho is bordered by Canada to the north, Washington and Oregon to the west, Montana and Wyoming to the east, and Utah and Nevada to the south. Although Idaho ranks 11th largest among the United States, only Alaska, California, and Texas have a greater reach north to south. The state's extreme geography maintains divisions among Idahoans: Boise is the population center and focus for the southwestern part of the state; East Idahoans look to Salt Lake City, Utah, as their cultural and commercial capital; and North Idahoans have strong ties to Spokane, Washington. Meanwhile, residents of Central Idaho's Blaine Countyhome to the world-class Sun Valley/Ketchum resort areapride themselves on being an island onto themselves; the area is more affluent, educated, and politically liberal than Idaho as a whole. Yet for all the state's geographic diversity, Idahoans agree on one point: The state is a natural treasure. Idaho has seven state-designated tourism regions. North to south, they are North Idaho, home to the state's largest lakes, North Central Idaho, where the Lewis and Clark Expedition met its toughest challenges in 1805 and 1806, and Central Idaho, the most mountainous of the regions. Southwestern Idaho includes both Boise and rugged canyonlands, while South Central Idaho is a high-desert region. Pristine Southeastern Idaho is home to the blue waters of Bear Lake, and sweeping Eastern Idaho is characterized by farmlands and the western slope of the Teton Range.
