Teacher's Guide
to Craters of the Moon Activity 2C
The Creeping Hot Spots
Students learn about the Mantle Plume Theory, plate tectonics, and Idaho geography by experimenting with a map of Idaho. Objectives:
  • Students will be able to explain the basics of the Mantle Plume Theory.
  • Students will understand that the crust slides over the mantle.
  • Students will be able to name key cities and geologic features of Idaho.
Duration:
1 to 2 hours Background:
The theory of plate tectonics explains much of Earth's geology. For example, California's famous San Andreas fault is formed where two tectonic plates come together and slide by each other. The tension that is created along the fault is periodically released, like a rubberband stretched to its breaking point, resulting in earthquakes. Other geologic phenomena require a combination of theories to be explained. For example, events creating the Snake River Plain that stretches across southern Idaho from Oregon to Wyoming cannot be described as easily as the San Andreas fault. A combination of "Rifting," "Basin and Range Faulting," "the Mantle Plume Theory," and Plate Tectonics are required to explain that big crescent. For a concise description of these theories and the likely sequence of events that made the Snake River Plain see pages 2.1 to 2.5. The student activity that follows will require that you understand the basics of these theories.

From the northern Panhandle, where Idaho is about 45 mi (72 km) wide, the state broadens south of the Bitterroot Range to 310 mi (499 km) in width. The Snake River flows in a great arc across S Idaho; with its tributaries the river has been harnessed to produce hydroelectric power and to reclaim vast areas of dry but fertile land. To the north of the Snake River valley, in central and north central Idaho, are the massive Sawtooth Mts. and the Salmon River Mts., which shelter magnificent wilderness areas, including the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness Area, and the Idaho Primitive Area. In the central and north central regions and in the Panhandle there are tremendous expanses of national forests covering approximately two fifths of the state and constituting one of the largest areas of national forests in the nation. Idaho's jagged granite peaks include Mt. Borah, which is 12,662 ft (3,859 m) high. Hells Canyon, which at one point is 7,900 ft (2408 m) below the mountaintops, is the deepest gorge in North America. The state also contains Craters of the Moon National Monument and a protected grove of ancient cedars at Upper Priest Lake.

    http://www.pbs.org/idahoportrait/adventures/followlc.html
Lewis and Clark's journey across Idaho in September, 1805 was the most difficult part of their entire transcontinental expedition. As they crossed the Bitterroot Mountains, the Corps of Discovery encountered an early snow, downed timber and found little to eat. By the time they emerged from the mountains eleven days later, the men were wet, cold, and starving. Luckily, they encountered friendly Nez Perce Indians who fed the expedition. Despite the hardship, Meriwether Lewis wrote of what would become Idaho, "It is a beautiful, fertile and picturesque country."
Idaho's geography also dashed the explorers' hope of finding an all-water route to the Pacific. After crossing the Lemhi Pass, they found what the Indians called "Big Fish Water." On the banks of what is now known as the Salmon River, William Clark realized it would be suicide to try to take canoes through the rapids of what is now called the River of No Return. In his journal, Clark wrote "the river is almost one continued rapid, the passage with canoes is entirely impossible."
Today, much is the same as when Lewis and Clark first set foot in Idaho. The Salmon River, which dashed their hopes of finding a water route to the Pacific, remains the longest undammed river in the lower 48 states. The vistas, first glimpsed in 1805, are now part of the largest block of wilderness outside of Alaska.

ID The state's name is thought to be an Indian name, Ee-dah-hoe, which means "gem of the mountains." Idaho, the 43rd state, joined the U.S. in 1890. Logging as well as mining are big industries in the state. But the state is probably best known for its potatoes. Idaho has a rugged landscape with some of the largest unspoiled natural areas in the country. Idaho is a Rocky Mountains state with exciting scenery and enormous natural resources. Idaho has towering, snow-capped mountain ranges, swirling white rapids, peaceful lakes and steep canyons. The churning waters of Snake River rush through Hells Canyon, which is deeper than the Grand Canyon. Shoshone Falls plunges down rugged cliffs from a height greater than that of Niagara Falls. Idaho is a skier's paradise but also provides excellent opportunities for hikers and campers during the summer.
