Idaho (ID), Idaho Falls
Idaho Falls, city, seat of Bonneville County, southeastern Idaho, at falls on the Snake River; incorporated as a city 1889. It is a commercial, manufacturing, and transportation center situated in an area in which potatoes, livestock, and grain are produced. Major manufactures include processed food, vitamins, toiletries, and building materials. The city also has a large tourist industry and is the site of a technical college. The nearby Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, a U.S. nuclear power research center, is a source of employment. Of interest in Idaho Falls are a Mormon Temple (opened 1945), the Bonneville Museum, a Japanese garden, and the Intermountain Science Experience Center, with exhibits on scientific topics. The community, settled in the 1860s, adopted its present name in 1891. Population 39,590 (1980); 43,929 (1990); 50,730 (2000). Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001

Tech Pros Flee 'Burbs
For Open-Space Locales By J OEL K OTKIN
F or much of the past twenty years, high-tech development has generally followed a predictable pattern: towards the periphery of major metropolitan areas. Starting with Route 128 near Boston and Silicon Valley, the fastest growing tech areas have been those close to certain urban centers. Yet, with the rise of the Internet and growing frustrations with life in the increasingly crowded Nerdistans, there has been a discernible movement of skilled professionals and their wealth- generating capacity to what may be called "leapfrog" tech poles. Increasingly influential environmental and "anti-growth" movements in places like the Route 101 Corridor, Orange County and Northeastern New Jersey may also play a role in shifting development further away. "Leapfrog" areas are defined as those that have substantial open space between themselves and any major metropolitan area. In some cases, they are areas that are a county or two outside the metropolitan fringe; in others, they can be hundreds of miles from any major metro area. Recent evidence in the last census, as well as technology surveys conducted by the Milken Institute, indicate that the high-tech revolution is beginning to move further out into these communities in the nation's hinterlands. In many ways, this parallels the 20th-century pattern of industrial growth which started in New England and the Middle Atlantic states and gradually shifted first to the less expensive, more centrally located Midwest and, later, to the states of the Old Confederacy. Today, although often very different in terms of their needs, the digital revolution may be about to follow a similar pattern out of its home base in the Nerdistans and "boutique cities" and into at least certain parts of the great American hinterlands.

It is bordered by Montana and Wyoming (E), Utah and Nevada (S), Oregon and Washington (W), and the Canadian province of British Columbia (N). Much of Idaho has a primitive and unspoiled natural beauty, with rugged slopes and towering peaks, a vast expanse of timberland, scenic lakes, wild rivers, cascades, and spectacular gorges. From the northern Panhandle, where Idaho is about 45 mi (72 km) wide, the state broadens south of the Bitterroot Range to 310 mi (499 km) in width. The Snake River flows in a great arc across S Idaho; with its tributaries the river has been harnessed to produce hydroelectric power and to reclaim vast areas of dry but fertile land. To the north of the Snake River valley, in central and north central Idaho, are the massive Sawtooth Mts. and the Salmon River Mts., which shelter some of the most magnificent wilderness areas remaining in the United States, including the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness Area and the Idaho Primitive Area. In the central and north central regions and in the Panhandle there are tremendous expanses of national forests covering approximately two fifths of the state and constituting one of the largest gross areas of national forests in the nation. Idaho's jagged granite peaks include Mt. Borah, which reaches an altitude of 12,662 ft (3,859 m). Hells Canyon, which at one point is 7,900 ft (2408 m) below the mountaintops, is the deepest gorge in North America. The state also contains Craters of the Moon National Monument.

The chief city of the extensively irrigated upper Snake valley, Idaho Falls is the prosperous commercial and processing center of a cattle, dairy, and farm region that produces potatoes, wheat, sugar beets, and alfalfa. Building materials, food products, leather goods, and electronic equipment are manufactured, and tourism is important (the city lies near several national parks and major recreational areas). Nearby Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, a national reactor testing station, is also a principal source of employment. Idaho Falls was originally a miner's fording point over the Snake River, first settled by Mormons. The impressive Idaho Falls Mormon Temple (opened 1945) is a prominent landmark. Several annual rodeos are held in Idaho Falls.
