Geography
Much of Idaho has an unspoiled beauty, with rugged slopes and towering peaks, a vast expanse of timberland, scenic lakes, wild rivers, cascades, and spectacular gorges. From the northern Panhandle, where Idaho is about 45 mi (72 km) wide, the state broadens south of the Bitterroot Range to 310 mi (499 km) in width. The Snake River flows in a great arc across S Idaho; with its tributaries the river has been harnessed to produce hydroelectric power and to reclaim vast areas of dry but fertile land. To the north of the Snake River valley, in central and north central Idaho, are the massive Sawtooth Mts. and the Salmon River Mts., which shelter magnificent wilderness areas, including the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness Area, and the Idaho Primitive Area. In the central and north central regions and in the Panhandle there are tremendous expanses of national forests covering approximately two fifths of the state and constituting one of the largest areas of national forests in the nation. Idaho's jagged granite peaks include Mt. Borah, which is 12,662 ft (3,859 m) high. Hells Canyon, which at one point is 7,900 ft (2408 m) below the mountaintops, is the deepest gorge in North America. The state also contains Craters of the Moon National Monument and a protected grove of ancient cedars at Upper Priest Lake. Rushing rivers such as the Salmon and the Clearwater, and many lakes, notably Lake Pend Oreille, Lake Coeur d'Alene (often described as one of the world's loveliest), and Priest Lake, as well as the state's mountain areas, make Idaho a superb fish and game preserve and vacation land. The state is especially inviting to campers, anglers, and hunters (Idaho has one of the largest elk herds in the nation). The state's climate ranges from hot summers in the arid southern basins to cold, snowy winters in the high wilderness areas of central and northern Idaho. The capital and largest city is

Logging as well as mining are big industries in the state. But the state is probably best known for its potatoes. Idaho has a rugged landscape with some of the largest unspoiled natural areas in the country. Idaho is a Rocky Mountains state with exciting scenery and enormous natural resources. Idaho has towering, snow-capped mountain ranges, swirling white rapids, peaceful lakes and steep canyons. The churning waters of Snake River rush through Hells Canyon, which is deeper than the Grand Canyon. Shoshone Falls plunges down rugged cliffs from a height greater than that of Niagara Falls. Idaho is a skier's paradise but also provides excellent opportunities for hikers and campers during the summer. New England - including Harvard, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Wellesley, Smith, Williams, Amherst, and Wesleyan - is unequaled by any other region. America's first college, Harvard, was founded at Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1636. Without, however, large expanses of rich farmland or a mild climate, generations of exasperated New England farmers declared that the chief product of their land was stones. By 1750, many settlers had turned from farming to other pursuits. In their business dealings, New Englanders gained a reputation for hard work, shrewdness, thrift, and ingenuity.

    http://www.virginiacity.com/hv07.htm
The Geography of Political Control Virginia City, Montana is a small plot of land (the bright red square at the left end of the map of Dakota Territory) which has been the center of many and various conflicts. As the Civil War began in 1861, that land was in Dakota Territory, and the capitol which controlled it was Yankton, D.T., 2,500 miles away by trail. That amounts to no political control at all. In 1915, Al Noyes copied material from a register that has since disappeared. He preserved the lost documents in his history. "We find another matter that is peculiar. On the 4th day of April, 1863, a deed was given by David Thompson, et al., to James D. Doty, all in Idaho Territory. On the Fifth day of April, 1863, a deed was given by John Ault, to Jack Allport, all in Dakota Territory. There must have been some misunderstanding as to what particular portion of the United States they were in." (From Noyes, Alva J. (Al). A History of Southern Montana, State Publishing: Helena, 1915) The cause of that glitch, reported by Noyes, was Lincoln's solution to the lack of his ability to control of the strategic flow of gold from the Oro Fino area of mines on the west side of the Rocky Mountains. The gold was vulnerable to being diverted to the South. There it could support the war efforts of the Confederate States. The gold fields were in Washington Territory on the west of the mountains. Those gold fields in 1862 were seven hundred miles from the capitol, Yakima, Washington Territory. President Lincoln's solution was to slice out the area including the gold fields. This he combined with part of Dakota Territory, including what was to become Virginia City. In April 1863, Congress established Idaho Territory, with the capitol very near the gold, in Lewiston, I.T. Now the gold fields could be controlled by the local Territorial Government in favor of Lincoln's war efforts.
