National Board Certification (NBPTS) Candidate Support Program
The Idaho National Board Certification Fee Subsidy Program
The federal government instituted a program in 1997 to provide financial assistance to individuals wishing to seek certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The program is called the National Board Certification Fee Subsidy Program. This program provides up to one-half of the fees required for National Board certification. At this time, the total cost of the National Board certification process is $2,300. Thus the subsidy program can pay for up to $1,150 of the total fees for a candidate who meets the eligibility requirements. Applications for subsidy are due in the state department of education office by November 15 (see details below).
Eligibility for Candidate Subsidy funding:
In order to receive any Candidate Subsidy funding, the individual must first submit an application for NBPTS certification program and provide verification that this has been done. Verification of enrollment can be a notarized copy of a receipt or cancelled check. A copy of the on-line registration process at www.nbpts.org can also be printed off and submitted to provide enrollment verification. Because the funding for the Candidate Subsidy program is limited, recipients will be determined by the date their application for the subsidy funding is received in the NBPTS office.

"The six bodies that grant accreditation to colleges and universities in the United States are near agreement on guidelines for evaluating distance education that differ from traditional accrediting standards by focusing on how much students learn. If enacted, the regional accrediting agencies would use the guidelines to set standards for granting accreditation to distance-education programs and institutions."

Accrediting Groups Issue Recommendations for Distance-Education Programs
"Representatives of the six U.S. regional accrediting bodies have finalized a set of recommendations for building and evaluating online-education programs. But the recommendations won't become accreditation standards, says Charles M. Cook, the director of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges' Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. 'We've always considered them testimonials, not a new set of standards,' he says. 'It's always been the local regions' option of how to adopt them.'"
