Spiders and Scorpions This module is intended to serve as a source of basic information needed to implement an integrated pest management program for spiders and scorpions. Any pest management plan or activity must be formulated within the framework of the management zones where it will be implemented. Full consideration must be given to threatened and endangered species, natural and cultural resources, human health and safety, and the legal mandates of the individual parks. Recommendations in this module must be evaluated and applied in relation to these broader considerations.
Most people are familiar with the general appearance of both spiders and scorpions. Spiders and scorpions are both arachnids, which is a group of animals that also includes mites, ticks, and harvestmen (daddy longlegs). The arachnids are closely related to insects. Both spiders and scorpions, like insects, have a hard external body, but spiders and scorpions have four pairs of legs while insects have three pairs.

White pine blister rust is probably the most destructive disease of five-needle (white) pines in North America. The causal agent originated in Asia and became established in Europe in the 18 th century after highly susceptible American white pines were widely planted. The disease was introduced into North America about 1900 on white pine seedlings grown in European nurseries and by the 1950s had spread to most of the commercial white pine regions. The three most important commercial white pine hosts are eastern white pine ( Pinus strobus L.), western white pine ( Pinus monticola Dougl.) and sugar pine (

Radon
[Page updated 5/18/04] Outreach Activities/Radon Cookbook [Added 2/12/04]
Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that emanates from the soil worldwide. It can concentrate in the home, and if breathed for a prolonged period of time, can cause lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths.
EPA updates estimates of lung cancer risk from indoor radon. Click here for more information. [Posted 10/21/03]

Re Kudzu
Wow - Talk about reiventing the wheel and not learning from past mistakes.
Aren't the 2 million acres of kudzu infested lands across the south east
adequate evidence of kudzu's invasive potential. Exotic invasive plants
are probably the second greatest threat to our remaining natural ecosystems
after habitat destruction resulting from direct human activities. Kudzu
is biological pollution of the worst sort.
If you need any further evidence of the destructive potential of exotic
invaders, I suggest a vist to south Florida, where invasive plants now
cover some 12% of the land mass with severe ecological impact to some of the most unique ecosystems in the continenetal US. Gene McAvoy Hendry County Extension At 02:47 PM 8/19/1999 -0400, you wrote:
