NCAA DIVISION I BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVES CORE-COURSE EVALUATION CHANGES ATLANTA, GEORGIA-A significant change in the initial-eligibility core-course evaluation process was approved by the NCAA Division I Board of Directors at its January 13 meeting in Atlanta in conjunction with the 1998 NCAA Convention. As a result of the change, high-school principals will determine which of their courses meet the definition of core courses. The signature of the principal will attest that the courses submitted satisfy the core-course requirements. The only instances in which additional support for a new submission would be required are those in which a high school wants to have a course approved retroactively for a student who has already graduated, when the course title suggests offerings that typically do not meet the 75 percent instructional-content criteria and when the submission is for a course that has been previously denied. The Board noted that the change in procedure for core-course evaluation does not reflect a change in initial-eligibility standards. However, the Board praised the NCAA Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet both for its work and the speed of its efforts in developing the procedural changes. The changes culminated a four-month study by the cabinet and included input from various constituents, including a number of secondary- education organizations.

  • Manage state and federal grant funds Maintain educational standards through uniform testing and professional certification Develop curricula Coordinate statewide planning Promote excellence in education
Education websites may contain directories of educational institutions, public school rankings and profiles, other educational statistics and reports and proceedings of the state's board of education. Visitors will often find information on educational policy, financial aid, college savings and planning programs, educational initiatives such as reading and child nutrition programs, grants available to professionals, educational and assistive technology, and school construction.

    2003 Legislative Hotline
    • This is the IEA’s Legislative Hotline message for Thursday, March 13th.
      Senate Passes HB 329
Late this afternoon the Senate passed HB 329 on a vote of 19-16. HB 329 is the measure that will make illegal IEA members contributing to IEA’s Political Action Committee for Education (PACE) via payroll deductions. The debate on the senate floor was virtually all one-sided. Except for the legislator who sponsored the bill on the floor, Sen. Brad Little (R-Emmett), and Sen. Patti Anne Lodge (R-Caldwell), all of those debating were in opposition. Senator after senator rose to criticize this legislation as an attack on free speech and, more specifically, an attack on the IEA and our political program. Several called the bill an embarrassment to the senate. In the end, however, the fact that the bill was sponsored by every Republican leader in both the House and Senate, as well as supported by the governor, made the difference. And, while we are disappointed and frustrated by the end result, the efforts of IEA members and Idaho firefighters in two short weeks turned what most thought would be easy passage into a final vote that barley totaled a majority.
