Posted on 11/29/1999 13:51:44 PST by rdf In an elementary classroom at Spokane's Oak Classical Christian Academy, students conjugate Latin verbs with the ease of reciting nursery rhymes. "Amo, amas, amat, amamus amatis, amant," two dozen students chant in sing-song unison, as if it were "fee, fi, fo, fum." After the Latin lesson, teacher Dana Peterson moves on to English grammar. For a refresher on prepositional phrases, Peterson cues them to recite a jump-rope jingle of 49 prepositions. Then come the adverb and adjective chants and diagramming sentences. The lessons often the stuff of high school curricula elsewhere are handled with ease by the 9-year-olds. Both in the way it teaches and the results it gets, the Oaks school flies in the face of modern education. Even in the realm of private religious schools, something very different is happening here.

Posted March 28, 2004 OUT OF THE SIXTIES
By: Lon Woodbury Those of us old enough to remember the 1960s will recall a decade of tremendous change, creativity and turmoil. It was a turning point decade, a time when many of the old attitudes were cast off and new directions taken. At least one national social critic has asserted that when you look at the things going wrong in this country today, they all came out of the 1960s. On the other hand, many of our most respected contemporary values were products of the 1960s. In education and personal growth, a tremendous amount of creativity and new thinking began during the 1960s. Traditional public and private education thinking was widely challenged. The traditional interventions for emotional and behavioral problems of juvenile detention or hospitalization were criticized as harmful all too often.

EDUCATION REPORT - July 17, 2003: Alternative Education
By Jerilyn Watson
This is the VOA Special English Education Report. Some young people in the United States attend alternative schools. These are schools that offer subject material or teaching methods that are different from traditional public or private schools. Some parents choose alternative schools because they want an education planned especially for their children's needs and strengths. The Marcus Garvey School, for example, is a private school in Los Angeles. It was established to help black families who were not happy with the schools in a poor area of the city. The school places importance on subject material related to African American culture. Student test scores are often two or more years above grade level. Music is at the center of studies at an alternative school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Many students at the Girard Academic Music Program Neighborhood School are also from poor families. They study the traditional subjects taught at other high schools. But they also read and write their own music. Almost all finish school. Most plan to go to college. Some students get an alternative education without leaving home. Online public and private schools offer a chance to learn by computer. For example, physical disabilities prevented a young man in Pennsylvania from attending his local high school. But he recently completed his high school requirements through an Internet school.

Mentoring Young Writers in the Classroom The Log Cabin Literary Center's Writers in the Schools (WITS) has grown into one of our most significant programs, though it seems sometimes the least visible. The planning began in late 1996, the year we opened our doors. Meetings continued through the winter with educators, funders, writers, and writer-in-residence programs in New York, Houston and Seattle. Their advice helped give our program its final shape. And the Houston Writers In The Schools program-the most respected in the country-invited us, along with three other new residency programs, in Detroit, Missoula and Seattle, to join with them in the National Endowment for the Arts Apprenticeship Initiative. This gave us access to the best advisers in the country as we developed and further defined our program. Our success owes them a large debt. Contents
Thank Yous First
Writers make all the difference, of course. And the writers working in classrooms with Idaho students represent Idaho's best: Gino Sky, Josephine Jones, Margaret Aho, Norman Weinstein, Diane Raptosh, Laura Harm, Paul Berg, Nicole LeFavor, Danny Stewart, Dawn Ludwin, Guisela Bayruth, Leslie Smith, Nick Hershenow and Lisa Sanchez. They've published almost two dozen books among them and hundreds of poems and essays and stories. It's their passion for language and for sharing that passion with students that makes the program what it is.

Online Guest: Ken Price (Churchill Fellow) November 16-25, 1998
Alternative ways of school students entering the IT industry
As a teacher in Tasmania, Ken observed many students with skills in computing and computer support that were not readily able to be recognised by school accreditation systems. He was awarded a fellowship with the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to investigate the ways in which these types of students could gain skills to help them enter the computing industry, as part of their general education. The Fellowship was sponsored by the National Council for Vocational Education Research , a South Australia-based organisation which provides research, evaluation and statistical information to a wide range of stakeholders who have an interest in vocational education and training. Ken returned recently from his trip to the United States and Canada which included site visits to 16 schools and several corporate sites in Hawaii, British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, New York, Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC, where he investigated courses ranging from network cabling and web development to Help Desk operation and robotics.

What's New Twin Falls revamps alternative school programs 10:56 AM MDT on Wednesday, May 12, 2004 Associated Press TWIN FALLS Officials with the Twin Falls School District are making some changes at Magic Valley High School in a bid to avoid sanctions under the No Child Left Behind Act. The alternative school is in its fourth year of failing to meet the federal standards. If test scores don't improve next year, the state could start taking away the board's control of the school. District Operations Manager John Miller says it's a high-stakes situation. The district is shifting the school day an hour to provide teachers with more planning time in the morning. And students will only take ten block classes a year instead of 12. The district is also ending the Bridge Academy, which serves seventh through ninth graders. Those students will return to the other two junior high schools in the district.
