163. Iceland Be Dammed
Article discusses dispute over harnessing rivers for hydroelectric power in Smithsonian Magazine.

document.write(''); Ministry for the Environment in Iceland Norsk Hydro Iceland Embassy Enrico Ferorelli ... read full text Iceland Be Dammed In the island nation, a dispute over harnessing rivers for hydroelectric power is generating floods of controversy Just beyond the northeasternmost reaches of Iceland's vast, volcano-studded Vatnajokull glacier lies an expanse of imperiled terrain. A proposed hydroelectric dam project would inundate 22 square miles of rugged landscape, a place scored by a glacial ice-melt river, the Jokulsa a Bru, and ice-melt streams. "What is at risk here," says one environmentalist, wildlife biologist Skarphedinn Thorisson, "is Western Europe's largest highland wilderness." The plan is as complex as it is controversial. The river, dammed and diverted to flow into a 25-mile-long tunnel, would then funnel into a second river. The combined waterways, feeding into a new underground power plant, would generate up to 750 megawatts of electricity to supply a proposed aluminum smelter in Iceland's eastern fjord country. Pro-development factions point out that 600 workers could be employed at such a facility. Environmentalists assert that a great deal more than job creation is at stake. Tourism, they say, is more vital to the national economy than industrialization. Ecotourism is increasing exponentially here. In 1995, for instance, 2,200 visitors came to Iceland for whale-watching cruises; last year, that number had soared to more than 60,000. Should the dam be built, says one activist, "Immense natural beauty will be lost forever."

Horseback Riding Treks in Iceland

It all started when I went to Iceland in 1974 with some college friends. (That's another story). Because of the people, the scenery , the horses and the art , I always wanted to go back. Finally in the 90s I did. I went back three times - '93, '95 and '98. And, who knows, maybe we'll go back again!
Generic stuff about all three rides
We ride for 5 to 10 hours a day. You'd stop every hour for about 10 to 15 minutes for a picture/potty/lunch break. The potty is the closest rock or ravine. Every third hour or so you'd change horses, with the guides assigning and catching a horse for you. After riding Icelandic horses all day, you get to the tourist hut, community center or guesthouse where the cold beer is waiting. Then dinner. The cook's van also brought your duffel and sleeping bag. The nights were on foam pads - either in one big gymnasium, a bunk bed room and couple times in a private room (after all, we are a couple). In the evening the group would sit around and talk in a variety of languages - on each trip we had Germans, some Swiss, some other Scandinavians, some Icelandics on holiday, a few from England and only two Americans - Charlie and I. Most everyone spoke English well. As the evenings progressed we became lubricated with a large variety of concoctions. A main staple of each evening's hilarity was Einar Einarsson's electric soup, a punch of fruit flavored juice and available liquor. Most of the times I just drink some plain juice, I don't need alcohol to loosen up and act crazy (as my friends can attest). We also entertained ourselves using the Ishestar songbook with a mixture of Beatles tunes, folk classics, German songs and Icelandic songs, accompanied on guitar by Ragnar Danielsen. I'll admit that after a drink or two, it's much easier to sing an Icelandic song.

in Canada and the United States to uphold its literary traditions and to foster continuing interest in Icelandic and North AmericanIcelandic history.
http://www.umanitoba.ca/faculties/arts/icelandic/
The Department of Icelandic Language and Literature has been at the University of Manitoba in the form of a Chair since 1951, when it was funded with an endowment created by the Icelandic community in North America. The Chair embodies the desire of the Icelandic community in Canada and the United States to uphold its literary traditions and to foster continuing interest in Icelandic and North American-Icelandic history. It has also served as a focal point for the teaching of Icelandic culture and language. Dr. Finnbogi Guðmundsson, the former head of the National Library in Iceland, held the Chair until 1956, when he was replaced by Mr. Haraldur Bessason, cand. mag., who held the post until 1987. Dr. Kirsten Wolf held the position of Chair and acted as head of the department from 1988- 2000. Dr. David Arnason has been Acting Head since then, and Dr. Birna Bjarnadottir has recently been appointed Chair of Icelandic Studies. In 1992, a professorship in the field of Icelandic-Canadian studies was established with the help of a grant from Secretary of State (Department of Multiculturalism).

178. Iceland Sheepdog
FCI Standard for the breed
http://www.arba.org/Breed Standards/Iceland-Sheepdog.htm
FEDERATION CYNOLOGIQUE INTERNATIONALE
NO 289 a The 24th June 1987
STANDARD: Iceland Sheepdog
Country of Origin: Iceland. GENERAL APPEARANCE
The Iceland Sheepdog is a typical Nordic Spitz, having pricked ears and curled tail. Seen from the side while standing the dog is rectangular, longer than high, the ratio depending on individual harmony. There are two types of coat, but at all times thick and efficiently water-repellent. The Iceland Sheepdog is lively, friendly, inquisitive and courageous. The countenance is contented, frequently smiling, and the ears very mobile. Movement is brisk, free and easy, and the breed has very great endurance. The dog has pronounced herding instincts, but is not very keen on hunting. It is thus a particularly good herding dog, and an excellent guard without being fierce. There is a marked difference in appearance between the sexes. HEAD
Wide between the ears, and a somewhat domed skull. The stop is clearly defined, but should not be too pronounced. Cheeks are flat. The bridge of the nose and the skull should be, seen in profile, as parallel! as possible. Muzzle is rather short, tapering evenly toward the nose seen both from the side and front above. The nostrils are well developed. Tight lips. The colder of the lips and muzzle shall be black except on chocolate brown and light fawn dogs where brown is permitted. EYES
The eyes shall be of medium size and almond shaped. The color shall be dark, but may be lighter according to the color of the dog. Yellow is not acceptable. The eyelids shall be black except in the case of chocolate brown and light-colored dogs when they may be brown. The expression is lively, intelligent and fearless.
