History of Iceland
Viking Age Iceland by Jesse L. Byock. Norse society in Iceland was almost a republican free state, without warlords or kings. This book covers all aspects of Viking Age life: feasting, farming, the power of chieftains and the church, marriage, and the role of women. ( UK Medieval Iceland: Society, Sagas, and Power by Jesse L. Byock. Uses all the available sources the medieval Icelanders' historical writings, extensive saga literature, and intricate laws to explore the way Iceland's social order functioned. ( UK The History of Iceland by Gunnar Karlsson. During Iceland's age of the sagas, there was no monarch or central authority. Its "dreary period" and loss of independence started in the 13th century, and its renaissance began with the struggle for independence from Denmark in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The snouts, nostrils, and feet of livestock grazing or walking on the grass turned bright yellow and raw. All water went tepid and light blue in color and gravel slides turned gray. Among other things, he wrote of an island that he called Thule or Ultima Thule. This island is thought to have been Iceland. 330 BC An explorer named Pytheas sailed north from Marseilles (France) to discover how far the world would reach in that direction. He navigated the British Isles and the northern seas and upon returning home wrote about an island that he called Thule or Ultima Thule, which either he had learned about from others or discovered himself. This island was six days north of Britain and one day removed from "the end of the world". The island he found is thought to have been Iceland.

Home Briet Bjarnhéðinsdottir (1856-) Woman Suffrage in Iceland Iceland never had a pre-historic period: Iceland was settled around 900 AD, well into the period of written history, and historical records exist almost from the first settlements. The year 930 is generally taken as the date of the first Alþingi, an assembly of local chieftains where laws were made and court cases tried. For centuries, Iceland had no prince or executive and was governed by the Alþingi. Iceland, settled by Vikings, was on the western periphery of Europe. Only a semi-permanent settlement in Greenland farther to the west and sporadic, seasonal fishing camps in Vinland (now part of Canada), marked an even further westward European frontier. But, as long as the Viking remained active, Iceland was somewhat integrated into Europe through a trade network with Iceland exporting fish and importing wood, metals, and grains. Iceland, however, did remain far enough removed from Europe that the Icelandic language is considered quite similar to the Old Norse in use when the country was settled, an era known as the Commonwealth Period. Indeed, contemporary Icelandic scholars indicate that their language has changed so little in the last 1000 years that they have little difficulty in reading works from the Commonwealth period. By the end of the 13th century, the Commonwealth period had come to an end and Iceland was firmly under the control of Norwegian King Häkon Häkonarson. But two things kept Iceland somewhat independent and separate: (1) most representatives of the King who resided in Iceland were born in Iceland (it seems few people wanted to move to Iceland) and (2) Norwegian laws were not automatically incorporated into Icelandic law – they had to be approved by Alþingi. Consequently, Icelandic governance was largely an Icelandic affair. Eventually, Norway came into a personal union with Denmark through marriage and inheritance, taking Iceland into union with Denmark. This union with Denmark was to last until 1944.

About the country of Iceland
The literary era in which most of the early sagas were written down, occured in 12th century. These works were in two main catagories:
  • Skaldic Poetry : which tended to be in praise of deeds by Norwegian Kings
  • Eddic Poetry : which drew its contents from the old Germanic myths and legends 200 years of peaceful coexistence became shattered as family fueds occured. The Norwegian King seized this opportunity to take control of Iceland. In 1262 Icelanders entered into confederacy with Norway, and this early democracy came under a foreign power. In 1387 the Kalmar Act of Union saw Norway, Sweden and Denmark come under one effective administration by the Danes and this control existed rigth up until the early part of the 20th century. In 1918 a new Act of Union was signed and Denmark relinquished all holds but for defense and foreign affairs on Iceland. This Act of Union was to be reviewed again in 1940. The infamous Cod Wars came out of Iceland's desire to expand the foreign imposed 4 mile limit for its fishing fleet in 1952. Then to 12, 50, and finally 200 miles in 1958, 1972, and 1975 respectively. Mini sea confrontations between the British Navy and Icelandic Maritime boats happened until 1976, when the two nations signed an agreement. Nowadays the only confrontation is with Greenpeace protestors and the whaling issue.

The first permanent settler of Iceland was Ingolfur Arnarson, a Norwegian Viking who in 874 AD made his home where Reykjavik now stands. In the year 1000, Icelandic-born Leifur Eiriksson (Leif Eriksson, sometimes called "Leif the Lucky") became the first European to set foot in North America. On another Viking expedition a couple of years later, Icelander Gudrid Thorbjarnardottir had a son, Snorri, who became the first child of European descent to be born in America. The Old Commonwealth Age, described in the classic Icelandic Sagas, lasted until 1262, when Iceland lost its independence. In 1918 it regained independence and in 1944 the present republic was founded. The country is governed by the Althing (Parliament), whose 63 members are elected every four years. Elections every four years are also held for the presidency; President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson was elected in June 2000 for the second time.

In 930 A.D., the ruling chiefs established a republican constitution and an assembly called the Althingithe oldest parliament in the world. Iceland remained independent until 1262, when it entered into a treaty establishing a union with the Norwegian monarchy. Iceland passed to Denmark in the late 14th century when Norway and Denmark were united under the Danish crown. In the early 19th century, national consciousness revived in Iceland. The Althingi had been abolished in 1800 but was reestablished in 1843 as a consultative assembly. In 1874, Denmark granted Iceland home rule, which again was extended in 1904. The constitution, written in 1874, was revised in 1903, and a minister for Icelandic affairs, residing in Reykjavik, was made responsible to the Althingi.

    Iceland
was settled in the late 9th and early 10th centuries, principally by people of Norwegian and other Scandinavian origin. In , the ruling chiefs established a republican constitution and an assembly called the Althing (locally written Alþingi) the "oldest parliament in the world". The parliament convened each summer at Þingvellir, where representative chieftains (Goðorðsmenn) amended laws, settled disputes and performed executions. Laws were not written down, but were instead memorized by an elected "lögsögumaður", or Speaker of the law. Iceland enjoyed a mostly uninterrupted period of growth in its commonwealth years. As is well known, settlements from that era have been found in southwest Greenland and eastern Canada , and one viking saga , "Eiríks saga Rauða" speaks of the settlers' exploits. The settlers of Iceland were mostly pagans , and worshipped, among others, Óðinn, Þór and Loki. In the year , under pressure from Norwegian king Haraldur, they accepted

    Iceland
The island called Iceland, which, though really a part of America, is considered, because of its population and history as forming a part of Europe, is situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, between 63 deg. 23 min. and 66 deg. 33 min. N. lat., and is separated from the New World by the comparatively narrow and almost entirely ice-bound Strait of Greenland. It is a compact body of land much indented by fjords on its northern and western shores. A small peninsula, with very sinuous outline, lies at the north-western end, and is connected with the main body by a narrow isthmus. The area of the island is about 39,756 sq. mi., only two-fifths of which are inhabitable. From the barren and rocky plateau, the average height of which is 2000 feet above the level of the sea, rise extensive glaciers ( ; pl. ), broad summits, and high mountains, most of which are of volcanic origin (e.g., Hecla, over 5000 feet; Oeraefa, 6424 feet), and frequently belch forth tremendous masses of lava and mud and work great havoc (e.g. 1783, 1845, 1873). Earthquakes are also frequent. The rivers, though short, are numerous and carry a large volume of water. There are also inland lakes. The climate, which is on the whole of the oceanic type (moderate fluctuations of temperature, with frequent fogs and precipitations), differs, nevertheless, considerably according to locality. It is more severe along the northern coast, which frequently remains icebound until the late summer, but it is tempered by the Gulf Stream on the southern and western coasts.
