Geography of Iceland
Iceland is a volcanic island in the North Atlantic Ocean east of Greenland and immediately south of the Arctic Circle. It lies about 4,200 kilometers (2,600 mi.) from New York and 830 kilometers (520 mi.) from Scotland. About half of Iceland's land area, which is of recent volcanic origin, consists of a mountainous lava desert (highest elevation 2,119 meters6,970 ft. above sea level), and other wasteland. Eleven percent is covered by three large glaciers: and several smaller ones:
  • Mýrdalsjökull, size 695 km² Drangajökull, size 199 km² Eyjafjallajökull, size 107 km²
Twenty percent of the land is used for grazing, and only 1% is cultivated. An ambitious reforestation program is under way. The inhabited areas are on the coast, particularly in the southwest, whereas the central highlands are totally uninhabited. Location: Northern Europe (mostly for cultural and historical reasons it is not considered to be a part of the Americas ), island between the Greenland Sea and the North

Iceland: Introduction
Background: Settled by Norwegians and Celtic (Scottish and Irish) immigrants during the late 9th and 10th centuries, Iceland boasts the world's oldest parliament, the Althing, established in 930. Independent for over 300 years, Iceland was subsequently ruled by Norway and Denmark. Limited home rule was granted in 1874 and complete independence attained in 1944. Literacy, longevity, income, and social cohesion are first-rate by world standards.

Volcanic Hazards
by Anne Gibson The above image Air Charter Iceland ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION The climate in Iceland is generally cold although precipitation figures are not as high as would be expected by many. Winds and storms are however unpredictable as it is such a remote island. Iceland is very sparsely populated (2.5/km The above image is taken from a photograph by Freysteinn Sigmundsson of the 1996 eruption PREDICTION Seismic Activity HAZARDS The main hazards involved in eruptions at Grímsvötn are those associated with jökulhlaups. This word comes from the Icelandic for "glacier burst". Jökulhlaups are largest in Iceland and have occurred with a discharge of up to 100,000 m Other hazards More minor hazards include ash fall, gas, lava bombs and earthquakes. Earthquakes Earthquakes are probably the most important other hazard as they can actually be used to predict the eruptions (as mentioned previously). These earthquakes can be up to magnitude 5 on the Richter scale but do not generally damage property or pose a danger to humans. Ash Fall Gas Basaltic Lavas and Tephra CONCLUSION Emergency Plan for Eruption If a few days warning can be given by geophysicists then it will be possible to issue good warnings providing a reasonable amount of information to the Icelandic people. These warnings would include:-

Iceland is one of the largest islands in the North Atlantic, lies between latitude 63°24´N and 66°33´N and between longitude 13°30´W and 24°32´W. Iceland has a total area of 103.000 sq km, or 39.756 sq. miles. From north to south the greatest distance is about 300 km or 185 miles, from west to east about 500 km or 305 miles. The coastline is 6000 km or 3700 miles and the shortest distance to other countries are 286 km or 180 miles to Greenland, 795 km or 495 miles to Scotland and 950 km or 590 miles to Norway.
Iceland straddles a submarine ridge connecting Scotland with Greenland and has one of the Earth's major geological faults - the mid-Atlantic rift - running through it. Iceland is one of the most active volcanic countries in the world, and nearly all types of volcanoes formed on earth can be found in Iceland.
Geologically Iceland is a very young country still in the progress of its formation. The appearance of the island of Surtsey , created by submarine eruption of the south coast 1963, is one example. Ten years later, in 1973, the island of Heimaey in the Westman Islands had a volcanic eruption. The entire population of some 5,200 were moved to the mainland in a matter of hours, luckily without any accidents occuring.

Iceland is Europe's westernmost country, the second largest island in the North-Atlantic ocean, a little over 3 hours flight from London, Paris, Amsterdam or Copenhagen. The first settlers came to Iceland from Norway and Ireland in the 9th century. Althingi, the world's oldest functioning legislative assembly, was established in the year 930 A. D. Iceland has a strong economy, low unemployment and low inflation. Per capita income is among the highest in the world.
Climate
The mild climate stems from the Gulf Stream and attendant warm ocean currents from the Gulf of Mexico. The weather is also affected by the East Greenland polar current curving south-eastwards round the north and east coasts. For two to three months in summer there is continuous daylight in Iceland, and early spring and late autumn enjoy long twilight. However, the days are very short in mid-winter.
