THE INSTITUTE FOR CINEMA AND CULTURE Since its inception almost two decades ago under the guidance of Professor Dudley Andrew and with the support the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Institute for Cinema and Culture (ICC) at the University of Iowa has consistently promoted international film culture in an interdisciplinary context to the university and local communities. Through regular film series (including each semester's Proseminar in Cinema and Culture offered through the Department of Cinema and Comparative Literature ), prominent guest speakers, and special events, the ICC has exposed students, faculty, and local communities to Greek, Indian, Yugoslav, French Canadian, and Taiwanese cinemas, among many others. Recently, for example, the ICC has programmed semester-long series of recent Iranian cinema, Asian film noir, and Icelandic cinema for large and appreciative audiences often encountering these examples of international cinema for the first time. The ICC also regularly supports guest speakers, ranging from rising experimental and documentary filmmakers to Hollywood professionals, along with many of the world's most prominent film scholars and critics. Finally, the ICC regularly supports annual student-run events that highlight world cinema, including

Reykjavik
Living in Iceland? Earlier today, in my other blog , I noted a cool blogged website called Living in Europe . As I was looking through it I couldn't find any Icelandic blog writers represented. Anyone looking to contribute to Living in Europe ? You can find the contact information somewhere on their site. I found it; it shouldn't be hard to locate. Oh, and if anyone would like to pay for our plane tickets we'd love to visit Iceland in the summer time. Oh, and Icelandair? If you'd like to take a big, old ad out here on my site, that can be arranged too. Not a problem. Permalink Comments (0) TrackBack (0)

Ring of Seasons : IcelandIts Culture and History > Customer Review #1: Not the best.

If you are looking for a well-organized history of Iceland, you probably dont want this one. I get the feeling that the author wants it both ways: to be folksy AND legitimate. It doesnt fly. . . I have read several books on Iceland and this is my least favorite. ...
Ring of Seasons : IcelandIts Culture and History > Customer Review #2: A pleasant mixture of culture and history This book was much more pleasant to read in many ways than most history books. It blends history with various cultural aspects such as sausage making and other traditional pasttimes and holidays. As a result, it does quite a bit to soften the sometimes drier moments of history. It is one of the few history books I have read that make me feel I would know something useful about a place if I were to travel there. Also, because the historical aspect is why I bought the book, I was not to be disappointed, the Cod Wars, the Settlement, Christianization, it is all there along with an especially interesting section on the first settlement of Greenland. I recommend this book.
