Culture
Superimposed on Iceland's rugged terrain is a resilient and independent culture, fashioned over the years by the descendants of the farmers and warriors who fled the tyranny of medieval Scandinavia. Their flight to a new and empty country resulted in the building of sturdy settlements and farms, and the beginning of a rich literary tradition dominated by the sagas - fact-based accounts of struggles, battles, heroics, religion and occupations - which are considered the finest of all Western medieval works. The country has also thrown up some significant contributors to modern literature, with Halld³r Laxness, Iceland's best known writer, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1955. Traditional music - usually cowboy songs and tear-jerking lullabies - remains popular, while giddy international success has greeted the Sugarcubes' former lead singer, Bj¶rk. Although Iceland is officially Christian, the ancient Norse religion known as satrº is gaining popularity, not only as a novelty but as an officially recognised sect. A sheep farmer revived satrº in the 1970s; it focuses on the natural forces and the harmony of nature represented by the ancient gods. Traditional Icelandic food is not as bad as it sounds: in fact several dishes are actually edible. The one glaring exception is

Country Info Iceland Introduction Iceland General Data Iceland Maps Iceland Culture ... Iceland Time and Date Iceland Culture Back to Top The Sagas, almost all written between 1180-1300 A.D., remain Iceland's best-known literary accomplishment, and they have no surviving counterpart anywhere in the Nordic world. Based on Norwegian and Icelandic histories and genealogies, the Sagas present views of Nordic life and times up to 1100 A.D. The Saga writers sought to record their heroes' great achievements and to glorify the virtues of courage, pride, and honor, focusing in the later Sagas on early Icelandic settlers. The best-known Icelandic writer of the 20th century is the Nobel Prize winner Halldor Kiljan Laxness. The literacy rate is 99.9%, and literature and poetry are a legendary passion with the population. Per capita publication of books and magazines is the highest in the world. Unlike its literature, Iceland's fine arts did not flourish until the 19th century because the population was small and scattered. Iceland's most famous painters are Asgrimur Jonsson, Jon Stefansson, and Johannes Kjarval, all of whom worked during the first half of the 20th century. The best-known modern sculptor, Asmundur Sveinsson (1893-1982), drew his inspiration from Icelandic folklore and the Sagas for many of his works. Kristjan Johannsson is most likely Iceland's most famous opera singer, while pop singer Bjork is probably its best-known artist internationally together with the progressive rock band Sigur Ros.

Iceland Setting the Table Unique Food Winter Celebration ... About
Iceland is not as cold as you might think from the country name. The average January day in Reykjavik is about the same temperature as it is in New York City. Iceland is in Europe close to Greenland and considered part of Scandinavia. It is located at 65N, 18W. The island's extreme north location gives very long days of continuous light in the summer, but very short days of very little sun in the winter. There are many interesting landforms in Iceland such as mountains, glaciers, volcanoes, geysers, hotsprings, and waterfalls. Much of the culture in Iceland is related to the Old Norse and Viking traditions. Trolls and other Viking monsters and creatures are a part of the folk stories. Iceland is also closely tied to Denmark and was a part of Denmark until 1944. The most important holiday is Christmas where lights hang from everywhere and very old traditions are followed by most people. THE EVENT STUDENTS PROJECT EXTENSIONS ... HOME

    CAMBODIA
CHINA DENMARK ENGLAND ... VIETNAM Iceland - October 2001 As long as I have been cognizant of the world around me, I have been intrigued by the idea of visiting Iceland. When I was young I heard stories about the naturally heated baths, beautiful countryside, and magnificent population and I decided that I had to visit. Thus, when my father and I were deciding where to go for our 2001 annual trip, the decision was very easy to make. I was surprised about how little I knew about Iceland. First, it is very close to the US (closer than New York is to California!) and it is actually warmer than where I live in Syracuse. Also, I wasn't expecting the country to be so sparsely populated (275,000 people in the entire country!) and the countryside to be so beautiful. I highly recommend everyone to expand their horizons and explore this beautiful little country!
