I don't for one minute believe this "ice storm" nonsense the media is trying to shove down our throats. The largest "peacetime" mobilization of the Canadian armed forces in history... thousands of soldiers sent to Montréal flashpoint of Quebec separatism... and to Ottawa the seat of our so-called "democratic" government. And we're supposed to believe all this is because of some freakish "ice storm?" Yeah, right! Isn't it interesting that this same "ice storm" has knocked out communications to hundreds of homes and made travel to the "afflicted" region almost impossible? Thousands of people cut off for over a week... plenty of time to be rounded up and "re-educated" be Chrétien's thought police! As for the TV coverage we keep seeing of this so-called "natural" disaster: well, we're not exactly talking about faking the moon landings here. One iced-up tree pretty much looks the same as any other. My God, even the Canadian film industry would be capable of faking this footage! (Although probably not without the assistance of several government grants.)

Polk County has long, hot summers because moist tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico persistently covers the area. Winters are cool and fairly short with only a rare cold wave that moderates in 1 or 2 days. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year, and prolonged droughts are rare, summer precipitation, mainly afternoon thundershowers, that are at times severe in nature. In winter the average temperature is 51 degrees F, and the average daily minimum temperature is 39 degrees. The lowest temperature on record, which occurred at Livingston on February 2,1951, is 4 degrees. In summer the average temperature is 81 degrees, and the average daily maximum temperature is 78.3 degrees. The highest recorded temperature, which occurred at Livingston on August 6, 1951, is 111 degrees. Snowfall is rare. In 70 percent of the winters, there is no measurable snowfall. In 10 percent, the snowfall, usually of short duration, is more than 2 inches. The heaviest 1-day snowfall on record was more than 5 inches. The average relative humidity in midafternoon is about 60 percent. Humidity is higher at night, and the average at dawn is about 90 percent. The sun shines 60 percent of the time possible in summer and 50 percent in winter. The prevailing wind is from the south-southeast. Average windspeed is highest, 9 miles per hour, in spring. During winters that are extreme with freezing temperatures combined with snow and ice road conditions become impassable and traffic control becomes a severe problem.

MODIS true color composite image MODIS true color composite image Terra MODIS imagery acquired and processed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center ( SSEC MODIS Direct Broadcast facility shows an unusually wide swath of significant snow cover (above, left) that resulted from a series of winter storms moving northeastward across the central United States during the 29-31 January 2002 period. Storm total snowfall accumulations across the Great Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes regions were as high as 6-18 inches in each of the affected states. Along the southeastern edge of the heavy snow band, significant freezing rain resulted in a 1-3 inch coating of ice across parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. The translucent nature of this thick ice coating across parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri is quite evident on the MODIS true color composite imagery (above, right , and also on this 3.2 MB JPEG image with city names overlaid) , in contrast to the brighter white appearance of the snow covered regions immediately to the northwest. This was one of the worst ice storms in Oklahoma history, downing 4000 electric power poles and causing loss of power to a quarter of a million homes and businesses.

The first ever Canadian Disaster Child Care response was during the Montreal Ice Storms in 1996. Christian Reformed World Relief Committee sponsored the qualified and certified volunteers who worked a total of 346 person hours, serving 315 children in the communities of St. Lazare, St. Bruno, St. Hyacinthe, LaColle and St. Jean sur Richeleau. The volunteers lived at one shelter and provided care at three shelters. "Our time in Quebec enabled us to fill a need in the communities we worked in. It helped each of us to grow as individuals and child care providers," says Marlene Mulder, chairperson of Canadian Disaster Child Care Society. Winter storms originate as mid-latitude depressions or cyclonic weather systems, sometimes following the path of the jet stream. A winter storm or blizzard, combines heavy snowfall, high winds, extreme cold and ice storms. Many winter depressions give rise to exceptionally heavy rain and widespread flooding and conditions worsen if the precipitation falls in the form of snow. The winter storm season varies widely, depending on latitude, altitude and proximity to moderating influences.

One Year Later: Another Look at an Infamous Ice Storm and its Aftermath
Posted on Thu, 07 Jan 1999 12:33:37 GMT Written by Michele Turk, Staff Writer, DisasterRelief.org As the U.S. Midwest and parts of the East Coast recover from massive snow and ice storms that crippled several states during the holidays, the severe weather is reminiscent of an unprecedented series of ice storms in the Northeast that still are reverberating one year later. In early January 1998, severe winter ice and high winds ravaged parts of New England, New York and eastern Canada, toppling trees which, in turn, sheered power lines and crushed roofs. Hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses were left without heat and other utilities. Eleven deaths were blamed on the storm and thousands were forced to flee their homes for the safety of shelters, where many people were stranded for a week or more. In Quebec, two million people were left without power, some for weeks, and Ontario was also hard hit.
Map of areas hit by the ice storm "All power was gone and there was no heat, so there was no way people could live in their homes," said Sam Houston, disaster chairman for the Black River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross in Watertown, N.Y. The Red Cross and other organizations sheltered and fed thousands of people and arranged home delivery services until power was restored.

    Your Questions
Hello. In my yard I have a lovely clump of birch with three stems (each stem is 5 or 6 cm in diameter). During the ice storms in January 97 and January 98, my birches bent right over until their tops touched the ground. In time, after the thaw, the trees returned more or less to normal. But one of the trees hangs over a sidewalk to the house and I have to push it out of the way quickly, which damages small branches and buds every time.
I have two questions for you:
Should I tie the three stems together before winter begins to reduce the curvature from ice storms, and if so, how? Could I give my birches any fertilizer or other vitamins next summer to strengthen them?
I have 4 cedars that are 10 to 15 feet high. I have removed the ice but they are still bent over.
Should I use stakes to straighten them up?
I had a series of shrubs (lilacs, sumac, etc.) around the perimeter of my yard. The ice from my neighbour's garage just fell on them (the ice was 6 inches thick). All my shrubs have been buried under a heap of ice.
What should I do? Will the shrubs survive?

    Ice storm leaves permanent scars
According to its dictionary definition, the California Incense Cedar is a majestic evergreen with shiny, dark aromatic needles that in the wild can grow straight up in a narrow cone to a height of as much as 100 feet. There is such a tree in the Coker Arboretum, but you wouldn't recognize it based on that description. The trunk veers from the ground at 45-degree angle before curving upward in its push for maximum sunlight.
