The historical record of ice storms affecting the Barren River Area is relatively short. Published accounts document events affecting major cities throughout the Southeast dating back at least 50 years (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 1997). Reports of ice storms in the National Climatic Data Center's Storm Data publications are available beginning in 1973 for the Barren River Area. By combining these reports with the longer record of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it is possible to piece together a record of significant ice storms affecting the Barren River Area from 1949 through 1999.
Ice storms are random events that occur infrequently in the Barren River Area. Over the period from 1949 through 1999, 33 ice storms were documented. Ice storms occurred in 25 of the 51 years of record with multiple storms in five different years (Figure 8-1).
Figure 8-1. Frequency of ice storms by year in the Barren River Area, 1949-1999.
Since 1973, 17 storms have hit Bowling Green. Nine of these storms deposited at least 0.25 inch of ice accumulation. These storms caused fatalities and extensive damage to buildings, trees, and power lines. Hart County has been declared a state of emergency due to ice twice in recent years, first in 1987 and then again in 1999. The first of these, 16,000 people were without power, and dairy farmers were affected because their milking machines were immobilized. Approximately 0.25" of ice was recorded at Bowling Green that day.

The Great Ice Storm of 1951 is by far the worst winter storm on record for Kentucky as well as much of Tennessee. The blend of winter conditions necessary to produce the storm came together in late January. After the temperature reached above 50°F on a rainy January 28 th , colder air began filtering into the region, bringing high temperatures of near 30°F and lows in the teens. Precipitation continued and turned to freezing rain. January 31 st brought 1.81 inches of precipitation, including four inches of snow on top of the accumulated ice, with a high temperature of 31°F in Bowling Green. The next day brought an additional five inches of snow and a reinforcement of polar air. When the storm was over, it had left nearly two inches of ice accumulated over a path from Nashville to Lexington, crossing right through the Barren River Area. The ice was covered by nine inches of snow. To make matters worse, record cold temperatures followed the storm. February 2 nd brought a then record low temperature of -20°F to Bowling Green, and the mercury dropped to -18°F the next day before temperatures in the region began to moderate (Harlan, 1952).

Heavy snow blanketed nearly all of Washington state on Tuesday, with many businesses, government offices and schools opting to close. Thousands of residents took advantage of the snow day to grab skis, sleds or anything else that would slide and head for the nearest hill. The fun was over Wednesday, though, with the warmer, sloppier weather.

Return to Previous Page ICE STORMS Historically, Alabama has experienced a number of ice storms. Although not as frequent as other disasters threatening the state, Alabama can expect to experience icing conditions about once every three to five years. History of Ice Storms in Alabama Significant ice storms that affected locations in Alabama occurred across the northern two-thirds of Alabama on January 6 and 7, 1988. Ice accumulation was nearly an inch along a line from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston. Much of the Tennessee Valley experienced snow, with as much as 10 inches of snow in Huntsville on March 1 to 3, 1980. Additional icing events include the following: January 20, 1983, statewide with worst conditions across north and central Alabama; January 12, 1982, statewide with worst conditions across north and central Alabama; January 2, 1977, statewide with worst conditions across north and central Alabama; January 2, 1977, central Alabama; and January 7, 1973, across the Tennessee Valley of north Alabama. The 1994 declaration for severe winter storms resulted from incidents occurring on January 16 to 18 and February 9, 1994. Cold, dry Arctic air over Alabama from January 16 to 18 was replaced by a warm, moist front. As the low pressure center moved out of the state, cold dry, Arctic air once again moved in with freezing temperatures, causing the wet mud to freeze. Then, on February 9, a stationary cold front retreated northward, bringing moist warmer air behind it. Weak low pressure cells moving along the boundary between cold and warm air masses pushed the warm, moist air up and over the cold surface air creating a shallow layer of near-freezing air at the ground surface. Precipitation, falling from the warm air layer froze on contact with cold surface objects creating a thick coating of ice. Flooding also occurred when debris-blocked channels could not drain off the water from melting ice and thawing soil.

What causes Ice Storms? Ice Storm
Freezing rain is a specific form of precipitation, as is rain, drizzle, sleet, and hail. It is the result of water particles falling as snow, then encountering a layer of warm air where the particles melt into rain. However, before the rain hits the ground, it goes through a cold layer of air just before the surface of the ground. The droplets are cooled, forming supercooled drops, drops that are cooled to below freezing but are not frozen. When these supercooled drops hit the ground, they thin out and freeze, instantly, forming a thin film of ice.
Diagram taken courtesey of USA TODAY
There are actually two forms of this supercooled precipitation: freezing rain resulting from droplets of a size greater than or equal to 0.5 millimeters; freezing drizzle forms from droplets less than 0.5 millimeters in size. Both types, however, can be deadly. Even as a thin layer, freezing rain also known by the names of silver thaw or glaze is dangerous, which you've experienced yourself if you've ever tried to walk on a surface covered with the ice, or worse, tried to drive on it. But the real danger with freezing rain is the build-up of ice on trees and power lines. The weight of this ice is enormous, and can cause tree limbs to break and fall, even the entire tree, and power lines to sag and fall. In this situation, it would be called an "Ice Storm". Ice storm warnings are a product issued by the National Weather Service when freezing rain produces a significant and possibly damaging accumulation of ice.

THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Another morning of ugly road conditions awaits Washington-area drivers this morning after a third consecutive night of icy rain and snow.
About a tenth of an inch of freezing rain fell in the region yesterday afternoon, complicating the evening commute, despite federal and D.C. officials' sending workers home early.
Anticipating that D.C. schools would open this morning after two days of closures because of inclement weather, transportation officials said road crews made clearing secondary streets leading to schools a priority last night.
However, some school closings were expected in Virginia and Maryland, and some D.C. schools also might stay closed today. Parents are advised to check the status this morning.

ICE STORM '98
Ice laden trees around my house
It was the evening of January 7, 1998 in the southern Rideau region when the power went out. That night the forest started to come down. For the next two days the forest took on a surreal crystal appearance with branches covered by up to 2 inches (50 mm) of ice. Every 20 seconds or so a crash would resound as another branch, too heavily laden with ice, cracked and fell to the ground, ice shards scattering on impact.
The ice storm, the worst this century, plunged several million people into the dark in an area ranging from the Rideau region in the west, to the Maritimes in the east. The hardest hit area was from the Rideau through to the south shore of Montreal. The area south of Montreal, now known as the "dark triangle", is still without power (January 20), as is much of the rural Rideau region.
The problem was a result of a trough of cold air sitting in the St. Lawrence lowlands. As moist, warm air from the south swept over the top of this cold air mass, rain fell, turning to freezing rain as it neared the ground, coating trees, power lines, and anything else it hit with ice. Normally, we would get one such storm and it would pass within a few hours. In this case, a series of ice storms swept the region, each adding a new layer of ice to already overloaded trees and power lines.

by Chris and Jesse
Ice storms, also referred to as glaze storms, are more common in the valleys and foothills. Ice storms are caused by general weather patterns. Ice accumulates when supercold rain freezes on contact with surfaces, such as tree branches, that are below the freezing point. This occurs when a winter front passes through an area after ground-level falls below freezing. The type of precipitation depends on the depth of the cold air. At first it is often deep enough for snow but the warm air associated with nearing storms erodes the cold air and the cold air mass gets shallower and shallower. Soon it is no longer snow but rain falling into cold air and the rain droplets freeze into small pellets known as sleet.

Security is never passive. Even with solid protection in place, achieving optimum security requires constant vigilance and attention to detail. Each day, new threats are discovered – underscoring the need to approach security as a dynamic process. Patch your holes
Just like crumbling mortar around bricks, operating systems gradually become less and less secure as bugs are uncovered and exploits engineered. Patching the holes when fixes become available is essential for proper security. If you use Windows, keep close tabs on the Windows Update site or – at a minimum – check for updates once a month.

Guldin, presenter Introduction In December 2000, two separate ice storms affected Arkansas forests. The storm on the 12th and 13th produced snow in northern Arkansas, with sleet and some snow from west central into north central sections. For much of central and southern Arkansas, freezing rain and sleet were common. The storm on December 25-28 produced mostly freezing rain and sleet. Ice accumulations were most severe in the western sections of the state, with up to three inches of ice common (fig. 1). As a result, ice accumulations affected trees throughout the state. The buildup of ice resulted in heavy damage to trees across the central and southern parts of the state. Together, these two storms have been called the worst ice storms in Arkansas in modern recorded history, dating from 1819. The forests of Arkansas were heavily damaged.

Frozen Fire: Carolina's Intermix Ice Storm by Steve Pyne The parching air Burns frore, and cold performs the effect Of fire - John Milton, Paradise Lost LAST SUMMER, at Alpine, Arizona, I found myself on the far outskirts of the Rodeo-Chediski fire, a monstrous burn that swept over the Mogollon Rim and torched a half dozen communities. Last week, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, I found myself within the perimeter of a Piedmont-spanning ice storm that crippled almost all the communities that fell under its white pall. The two events were weirdly symmetrical. They were both the outcome of how contemporary Americans choose to live on the land and, in particular, how they landscape with trees. THE AWKWARDLY named Rodeo-Chediski fire was the largest in Arizona's recorded history, yet it was matched in size, damages, and media attention by others throughout the West, most notably the Hayman and Biscuit fires in Colorado and Oregon, respectively. It was not their size that gripped the nation by its lapels, however, but the spectacle of mass evacuations before the flames. The fires assaulted more than trailer parks and trophy homes: even large rural towns like Show Low were emptied and hustled to evacuation centers.
