It was 20 years ago Tuesday when the U.S. Olympic hockey team made us believe in miracles. The young Americans' upset of the mighty Soviets in the 1980 Winter Olympics remains one of the great moments in sports history. ESPN.com's Ray Ratto says it wasn't just the game that it made it the Miracle on Ice; it was the timing and context of it. The Cold War was at one of its peaks, and the Russians seemed invincible , especially on the ice. All that changed Feb. 22, 1980.

    http://www.publiscan.fi/sp20e-7.htm
Ice hockey conquering Europe A s a sport originally played on naturally frozen surfaces, ice hockey has traditionally been strong in the Nordic countries, especially in Finland. It is far and away the country's most popular team discipline and attracts the largest numbers of spectators. It is also the first discipline in Finland to have become clearly professional at the top level. As is the case with sport generally, ice hockey is now in the throes of a major transition. Amateurism was finally laid to rest at the Atlanta Olympics and the power of that awesome trinity sport, business and media (mainly television) was clearly demonstrated. The interplay between these three forces is becoming more clearly anchored in modern top-level sport with every day that passes. Ice hockey is strongly positioned within this development of sport. Having long ago been transformed from an outdoor game to one played in comfortable halls on a relatively small rink, it is very telegenic. In addition to that, it boasts all of the features of good sports entertainment: speed, force and aggressiveness, individual virtuosity and the tactical refinements of a team game. In the European countries where ice hockey has traditionally been strong, the burgeoning role of business and media has forced the sport to adjust to new circumstances. Following the so-called Bosman case concerning transfer rights in football, the European Union has also put an end to transfer payments made to ice hockey clubs, forcing those in, especially, Sweden and Finland to revise their entire strategies. Those are the countries in which the sport is particularly strong at the junior level, just as it used to be in the former Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia.

International sports court forbade Russian ice hockey goalie to play for Russia's national team at Olympics
The International Sports Court of Arbitration forbade Russian ice-hockey goal-keeper Yevgeny Nabokov to play for the national team of Russia at the Olympics in Salt Lake City. The court motivated its decision by the fact that the Rules of the International Ice-Hockey Federation (IIHF) forbid a player who played for a national team of one country in official games held under the IIHF aegis to later form part of another country's national team.
The leadership of the Russian Olympic Select invited Yevgeny Nabokov as one of the two main goal-keepers of the squad. He played for the national team of Kazakhstan in the world junior championship of 1994. And though after that he did not form part of a national team of the other country, the court ignored this fact, the RIA Novosti correspondent reports.

Hockey was first brought to North America when British soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, played the earliest games. By the 1870s, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal were organizing games and had developed the first known set of hockey rules. In accordance with this new set of regulations, known as the "McGill rules," a puck was substituted for a rubber ball and the number of players on a team was set at nine. The National Hockey League was formed in 1910; there are currently 30 clubs competing in the National Hockey League.

    • On September 23, 1992, Manon Rheaume started as goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightning in a National Hockey League exhibition game. She was the first female to start a game in one of North America's four major professional sports leagues (baseball, football, basketball, and ice hockey). There have been seven women's World Hockey Championship tournaments (1990, '92, '94, '97, '99, 2000, and '01). Canada has won the gold in all seven while the United States has been runner-up in all seven. Women's hockey was accepted as a full-medal sport at the 1998 Olympic games in Nagano, Japan. The United States was undefeated (6-0) in the tournament and won the gold medal with a thrilling 3-1 victory over Canada. The Patty Kazmaier Award is given out each year to the most outstanding college women's player. In 2001, it was won by Harvard's Jennifer Botterill. The National Women's Hockey League is currently thriving with eight teams playing throughout Canada.
