ICE HOCKEY
About

The word hockey comes from old French "hocquet" which meant "stick". The origins of ice hockey are unclear, but it's widely accepted that the British are responsible for bringing hockey to North America. Soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, played the earliest games. In 1879, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal organised competitions and had developed the first known set of hockey rules. The sport migrated south to the United States during the 1890s. The first known hockey games took place between Johns Hopkins and Yale Universities in 1895. The first Olympic Games to include ice hockey for men took place in 1920 in Antwerp. However, the first Olympic Winter Games took place in 1924 in Chamonix.
COMPETITION At the Olympic Winter Games, women compete in an eight-team tournament (women's hockey was added to the Olympic Winter Games programme in Nagano in 1998), whereas men compete in a 14-team tournament.

Miracle in the Making
For two decades the U.S.S.R (now known as Russia ) dominated the world of hockey , taking home the gold in 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976. Tired of being humiliated year after year, the Olympic committee recruits hockey coach Herb Brooks (played by Kurt Russell) to put together, and coach, the US Men's Olympic hockey team . Brooks steps on a lot of toes during his pursuit of gold , pushing the team harder than a run-in with Red Forman on a bad day, but his efforts end up paying off

U.S. Shocks Soviets in Ice Hockey, 4-3
By Leonard Shapiro
Washington Post Staff Writer
February 23, 1980; Page D1 When the final horn sounded, players, coaches and team officials poured onto the ice and mobbed goalie Jim Craig, who stopped 36 shots. (File Photo) The U.S. won on a 20-foot wrist shot by team captain Mike Eruzione, whose name means "eruption" in Italian, with 10 minutes remaining. "I still can't believe this has happened," Eruzione said. The United States, seeded seventh in the 12-team field at the start of the competition, clinched at least a bronze medal with the victory. Following the 3-3 tie between Sweden and Finland in last night's other game, based on the complicated point system for this tournament, the United States has three points, Sweden and the Soviet Union two each and Finland one. A victory against Finland by the United States Sunday would clinch the gold for the Americans regardless of the outcome of the Soviet Union-Sweden game. If the U.S. and Finland tie, a tie in the other, later game would give the gold to the U.S., as would a victory by the Soviets. A win by Sweden in that game, however, would give the gold to that country on the basis of goal differential. Sweden and the U.S. tied in their head-to-head encounter.

(152 cm) and with a blade, which may be slightly curved, no wider than 3 in. (7.6 cm) and no longer than 12.6 in. (32 cm). Players wear protective pads under their clothing, thick gloves, and a helmet, which is mandatory in all professional, and most amateur, games. Goaltenders are allowed to use heavier and wider sticks (to help keep the puck out of the net) and wear additional protective equipment, including face masks. The skates worn for ice hockey differ from those used for figure skating and speed skating in that the blade is thinner and shorter, with a plain, pointed end, and the boot is lower and thicker.

Penalties. top Under international rules, the game is controlled by two referees. In the NHL, the game is controlled by a referee and two linesmen. Penalties are assessed for holding, tripping, slashing with the stick, boarding (an illegal check), charging, cross-checking, elbowing, high-sticking (a player cannot carry his stick above his shoulder), hooking, interference, roughing, spearing, and fighting. The offending player is sent to a penalty box for two minutes for minor infractions (e.g. hooking, tripping) or five minutes for major infractions (e.g. spearing, fighting). Teams may not substitute for players who are penalized and must play shorthanded during the term of the penalty; neither team, however, can be at more than a two-player disadvantage at one time. The team with the player advantage sets up an offense known as a power play and attempts to score while the opponent is shorthanded.

    30-Second History
    • Ice hockey was created in Canada by native Indians in the early 1800s. Until 1980, ice hockey was widely reported to have been created by British soldiers in the mid-1800s and spread throughout Canada as a cross between English field hockey and Indian lacrosse. Men's ice hockey became an official event in the Olympic Games in 1920. Women's ice hockey was added to the Olympic schedule in 1998.
    Timeline
Early hockey-like game played by the Micmac Indians in Nova Scotia, Canada, was spread around Canada by early immigrants and military personnel. Rules were borrowed heavily from field hockey. The puck, instead of a ball, was first introduced at Kingston Harbour, Ontario, Canada. The first known organized women's ice hockey game was played in Ontario, Canada. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) was formed using the French name Ligue Internationale de Hockey sur Glace (LIHG). Ice hockey debuted at the Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. The U.S. won a silver medal. The introduction of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the United States with the first U.S. NHL team, the Boston Bruins.

    Did You Know?

Who Organizes Ice Hockey in the U.S.?

Who Oversees Ice Hockey in the World?

30-Second Guide to Ice Hockey Ice hockey is a team sport and, as such, features two six-player teams competing against each other on a large sheet of ice. Using hockey sticks to handle the puck, players try to score a goal for their team by getting the puck into their opponents' net. The net is guarded by a goalie. All players wear ice skates and extensive protective gear. Did You Know?
    • Some professional players can shoot the puck between 90 and 100 miles per hour. Speeds of up to 120 miles per hour have actually been recorded by some of the hardest shooters in hockey. USA Hockey, Inc., also organizes inline hockey in the United States. Because it is not played on ice, inline hockey uses skates that have wheels instead of a steel blade. National Hockey League (NHL) players were allowed to play in the Winter Olympic Games for the first time in 1998. Women's ice hockey debuted at the Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, in 1998, but organizers of the Lillehammer (Norway) Games were given the option to include the sport four years earlier in 1994. They turned it down.
