    WINTER OLYMPICS ICE HOCKEY
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1920 The word hockey comes from old French "hocquet" which meant "stick". The origins of ice hockey are unclear, but it's widely accepted that the British are responsible for bringing hockey to North America. Soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, played the earliest games. In 1879, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal organized competitions and had developed the first known set of hockey rules. The sport migrated south to the United States during the 1890s. The first known hockey games took place between Johns Hopkins and Yale Universities in 1895. ICE HOCKEY joined the Olympic program at the 1920 Antwerp Summer Games (see also Discontinued Sports ) held in early April. There were also the first world championships and were played by seven-man sides, the only time seven-man teams ever to play at the Olympic Games. Four years later, men's hockey made its winter debut in Chamonix with the current standard of six men on the ice at a time and has been part of every winter program. Canada and the Soviet Union have been the two dominant countries in the history of men's Olympic ice hockey. The two countries have won 14 out of the 19 Olympic tournaments. Canada won the first four Olympic tournaments and six of the first seven, but its streak ended in 1956. The gold medal at the 1952 Oslo Games marked the sixth and last gold medal for Canada. The changing of the guard occurred at the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo Games with the emergence of the Soviet Union. The Soviets dominated the competition and won eight of the next 10 gold medals. The only interruptions to the streak were when the United States upset the Soviets in 1960 and 1980 on American soil. After the Albertville Games in 1992, the Soviet Union collapsed and the country's Olympic hockey dynasty ended.

Team USA All Time Leading Scorer
There are few athletes in the world who define their respective sport; Michael Jordan, Lance Armstrong, and Tiger Woods come to mind. Cammi Granato IS women's ice hockey. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago as the youngest of four hockey playing siblings Cammi was playing organized hockey in kindergarten. At the time, women's ice hockey didn't exist, so she played with the boys through high school, going on to not only pioneer the women's side of the sport, but to become, and remain, the best ever on blades. A scholarship to hockey powerhouse Providence College honed her skills, where she went on to become the school's all-time leading scorer (139 goals in 99 games). In 1990 Cammi became one of the inaugural members of Team USA and is the only player in history to have maintained her spot on the team ever since - she's also Team USA's all-time leading scorer! In 1998, she captained the American team through the Olympics Games in Nagano, Japan and won the Olympic Gold Medal. She was then elected by the entire US Olympic Team to carry the American flag at the closing ceremonies.

    Eddie Jeremiah - 1973
A seven-time letterwinner at Dartmouth, Eddie Jeremiah was the Big Green's hockey coach from 1937-67 and compiled a coaching record of 300-247-10. His teams in 1948 and 1949 were runners-up in the NCAA championship tournament. After his successful playing days at Dartmouth ended, Jeremiah went on to a five-year professional career.
    William Riley - 1977
Bill Riley was one of the great all-time scorers in college hockey and was one of three famous hockey playing brothers. Playing four varsity seasons, Riley appeared in 71 games, scoring 228 points (118g, 110a). Riley was a major factor in the Big Green's march to two NCAA finals. He continued his interest in the game and became an official in New England. Riley was honored for his contributions to hockey when he received the Sheaffer Pen Award.
    Myles Lane - 1973
Myles Lane ranks as one of Dartmouth's greatest athletes of all time. From 1925-28, Lane earned three letters each in hockey and football and another in baseball. He was captain of the 1927-28 hockey team and gained national prominence by becoming the first American collegian to successfully enter professional hockey, joining the New York Rangers. While at Dartmouth he established records for goals in a season by a defenseman (20) and career goals by a defenseman (50).

    Bob Gaudet - Head Coach
Bob Gaudet enters his seventh season as head coach of the Big Green. Gaudet is a 1981 graduate of Dartmouth and played four years for the varsity hockey team as a goaltender. He came back to Dartmouth after nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench. At Dartmouth, Gaudet has guided the Big Green to three straight winning seasons, including 20 wins last year for the first time since 1947-48. It marks the first time since 1971-1974 that Dartmouth has had three consecutive winning seasons. He also led the Big Green to home playoff series the last three years and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to 8th in ’90 and ’91, 5th in ’92, 3rd in ’93, 4th in ’94 and all the way to 2nd in ’95. Gaudet has begun the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in 2001 and tied for third last season.

Nagano Olympic stars pay a visit to White House April 29, 1998 WASHINGTON Once more, the U.S. women's hockey team outshone the men. While the medal-less men's hockey team was not invited because several of its players trashed some dorm rooms in Nagano, the women's team basked again in their gold medal glory with America's other Winter Olympians and President Clinton on Wednesday. "It was really cool," women's team captain Cammi Granato said after a brief ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House. "It was kind of neat to walk in a say, 'Hey, we're in the White House.' It kind of brought back the Olympic feel." WHILE NO MENTION WAS MADE OF the men's hockey team, Clinton departed from the usual congratulatory remarks and challenged the athletes present to become role models. "If you choose, for the rest of your lives, because you were an Olympian, you can have a profound, positive impact on all the people with whom you come in contact, but especially on young people," Clinton said. "The lessons of setting your sights high, working hard, being persistent, believing in yourselves, playing by the rules, supporting your team those are lessons that every child in America needs to learn, lessons that every child can see in your eyes and in the power of your example."
