Isobel Preston, Lord Stanley's daughter, is photographed playing hockey in the first recorded image on film of a woman involved in the sport. The first newspaper account of a game of women's ice hockey appears in the Ottawa Citizen on February 11. Reports of the first game being held in Barrie, Ontario in 1892 are incorrect. The first female club team (the Love-Me-Littles) is formed in Kingston, Ontario at Queen's University. Women's teams are formed at McGill University and in the Ottawa Valley. Picton wins the first Women's Provincial Championship held in Ontario. The first international women's ice hockey tournament is held in Cleveland, Ohio between American and Canadian teams.

Miracle On Ice:
To say that Mike Eruzione is the United States greatest hockey legend sounds a little funny. He wasn't a great player, in fact he never made it to the NHL. Of all the great names in American hockey history, Eruzione would probably rank near the bottom in terms of hockey talent. Yet Eruzione's lone significant accomplishment ranks highest of all American hockey achievements. Mike Eruzione scored the game winning goal in the legendary "Miracle on Ice." Like Paul Henderson for Canada in 1972, Mike Eruzione will forever be remember for scoring that goal and little else. The 1980 Olympic Games were of course held in Lake Placid New York. The American squad was led by head coach Herb Brooks and were heavy underdogs. In an exhibition game just prior to the Olympics, the Soviets dismantled a U.S. squad with an average age of 20, 11 goals to 3. After an opening game tie against Sweden, the Americans would go on to win their next 4 games, only to find themselves against the Goliath known as the Soviet Union. Coach Brooks told his team "You were born to be hockey players. You were meant to be here. This moment is yours." In a classic confrontation the teams remained tied with ten minutes to go. Enter Eruzione.

Germany's "White Olympics" were tainted by a Brown Shadow Most people associate the 1936 Olympics with the notorious Berlin games, held in the summer of that year. But the winter games, held February 6-16 in the Bavarian villages of Garmisch and Partenkirchen, came first. Though overshadowed by the dramatic change of political landscape that accompanied the National Socialists' rise to power in Germany, they were also the stage for remarkable achievements in sports history.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially awarded Germany the honor of hosting the games in 1931, when Germany was still a democratic country. But in 1933, Adolf Hitler and his National Socialists came to power, and the political climate changed. Observers in the United States and other western democracies questioned the morality of supporting Olympic Games hosted by the Nazi regime. Short-lived boycott efforts surfaced in Great Britain, France, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, and the Netherlands.
However, when the IOC met in Austria in 1933, it was unwilling to break its tradition of not mixing sport and politics and decreed that the games would go ahead as planned, with one important stipulation: that the Germans not exclude Jews from participating. The Nazis complied, allowing German Jews to participate in the Games and pledging fair treatment of all athletes. With this assurance, the decision was made not to change the venue.

Team USA All Time Leading Scorer
There are few athletes in the world who define their respective sport; Michael Jordan, Lance Armstrong, and Tiger Woods come to mind. Cammi Granato IS women's ice hockey. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago as the youngest of four hockey playing siblings Cammi was playing organized hockey in kindergarten. At the time, women's ice hockey didn't exist, so she played with the boys through high school, going on to not only pioneer the women's side of the sport, but to become, and remain, the best ever on blades. A scholarship to hockey powerhouse Providence College honed her skills, where she went on to become the school's all-time leading scorer (139 goals in 99 games). In 1990 Cammi became one of the inaugural members of Team USA and is the only player in history to have maintained her spot on the team ever since - she's also Team USA's all-time leading scorer! In 1998, she captained the American team through the Olympics Games in Nagano, Japan and won the Olympic Gold Medal. She was then elected by the entire US Olympic Team to carry the American flag at the closing ceremonies.

But, Canadians are far from alone in their passion: though they may have invented ice hockey, this sport more than any other, carries similar resonance for the Czechs, whose own hockey tradition reaches back to the turn of the 20th century. It may have taken them forty years to become world champions and ninety to win Olympic gold, but few doubt the Czechs' place in the world of hockey today. They have stars in the NHL and one of the best goaltenders ever to play the game. What's more in 2004 the Czechs even produced an opera in the name of the sport celebrating their 1998 gold finish. Now, not even the Canadians have that!

The United States have won their semi-final showdown with Russia to qualify for ice hockey's gold medal match. The hosts, buoyed by a partisan crowd at the E Center, scored three early goals, all from power plays, and seemed to be coasting to a comfortable win. However, Russia came out in the third period a changed outfit and scored two goals within three minutes to set up a grandstand finish. Having been completely outplayed for 40 minutes, the Russians threw everything at Mike Richter's goal, but were unable to find a way through for the vital third goal. The match came 22 years to the day since their meeting at the Lake Placid games - one of the most memorable hockey matches in history.

Harvard Men's Hockey
A Brief History of Long Traditions

This is the 101st season of Harvard men's ice hockey. It all began with a game against Brown on January 19, 1898 at flooded Franklin Park in Boston that inaugurated the oldest collegiate ice hockey rivalry. Harvard lost that game but went on to win well more than its share of games against Brown and more than 63 percent overall against seventy other opponents. Throughout the past 100 years, Harvard has been synonymous with collegiate hockey.
Although Harvard's hockey program has produced several professional players, the emphasis has been on the amateur aspect. That these have been very talented amateurs is attested by the program's more than 30 Olympians and All-Americans. Since formalization of the Ivy Group in 1954, Harvard has followed the League's need-based financial aid rules in hockey as in all sports. Despite this recruiting handicap, Harvard has retained and actually enhanced its high level of national competition.

Tony Amonte scored the game's first goal, beating Martin Brodeur to give the United States a 1-0 lead. But Canada stormed back when Paul Kariya scored to put the his team on the board. Then, with just under a minute and a-half left in the first period, Joe Sakic fired a pass from the left corner to Jerome Iginla who was streaking to the right post. Iginla stuffed it in for the tie-breaking goal. Canada dominated much of the second period but failed to take advantage of a two-man advantage when Mario Lemieux missed a wide-open net. Brian Rafalski later scored for the United States to tie the score at 2-2, but Canada took a 3-2 on a Sakic wrist shot. Canada put the game on ice when Iginla and Sakic scored in the third period.

Hull scored on a slap shot in the first minute of the period after Belarus goalie Andrei Mezin shut out the United States in the first period, then set up LeClair for two goals in less than five minutes giving LeClair five goals in three games. Modano, reunited on a line with Hull, his former Dallas Stars teammate, also had two assists as the Americans finished 2-0-1 in round-robin pool play under coach Herb Brooks. The win all but assured the U.S. team of a Wednesday quarterfinal game against Germany. The United States led 3-1 after two periods, then piled on five goals in the third period two each by Scott Young and Bill Guerin to create a big advantage in any tiebreaking situation. Young and Guerin now have three goals each in the Americans' three Olympic games.

Russain Coach Inducted Into Ice Hockey Hall Of Fame
Viacheslav Fetisov, Russia's Olympic ice hockey coach and one of the country's most titled players, was officially inducted into the ice hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto on Monday.
From the 226 players inducted into the Hall of Fame, Fetisov is only the second Russian, following in the footsteps of his famous CSKA and Russian select team colleague in the seventies and eighties, Vladislav Tretyak. Fetisov's fellow inductees are Jari Kurri, Dale Hawerchuk, Mike Gartner. They have all recently finished their long and highly successful careers.
Having replaced Boris Mikhailov as CSKA and Soviet Union captain, Fetisov went on to lead his club to 12 national championship victories and his country to 7 world titles, as well as two Olympic golds (1984 and 1988). He made the move Stateside in 1989 and went onto claim two Stanley Cups in 1997 and 1999 with the Detroit Red Wings. He is currently assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils.
"I have achieved everything I dreamed of in my childhood," Fetisov told journalists, while admitting that even in his wildest dreams he never thought he'd be elected to the Hall of Fame.

College kids perform Olympic miracle
By Kevin Allen
Editor's note: This article originally appeared as a chapter in "USA Hockey: A Celebration of a Great Tradition." What the U.S. hockey team did to the Soviets on the ice at Lake Placid in 1980 hardly compares to what they did to the hearts and minds of American people. "It's the most transcending moment in the history of our sport in this country," gushed Dave Ogrean, former executive director of USA Hockey. "For people who were born between 1945 and 1955, they know where they were when John Kennedy was shot, when man walked on the moon, and when the USA beat the Soviet Union in Lake Placid." The 1980 U.S. team, consisting of college players and long-shot pro aspirants, won Olympic gold. No other Olympic performance has touched America the way that hockey team did, not even Jesse Owens's brilliant runs in front of Adolf Hitler in Berlin in 1936. Thanks to the advent of television, Eruzione's goal in 1980 triggered a spontaneous national celebration of amazing proportion. People wept, strangers hugged each other, and groups around the country broke into stirring renditions of "God Bless America" and "The Star-Spangled Banner." Those in attendance remember the incredible number of American flags that were in the crowd that day, not small flags that fit comfortably in the hands of small children, but mammoth flags that were usually found on 30-foot flag polls. Americans were overcome by patriotism.
