One Goal at a Time is the first ever documentary style video on U.S. Women's Ice Hockey and the U.S. Women's National and Olympic team members. This film was produced by Earth on Fire Productions , a company owned and operated by two former collegiate women ice hockey players. Owners, Bree Cheatham and Courtney King both played four years of Division I college hockey at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts between 1993 and 1997. In 1997 they ended their college careers with an ECAC championship title. Both girls played hockey since they were very young and participated in both development camps and in USA Hockey tryouts for the U.S. Women's National and Olympic Teams since the program began in 1990.

AP WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) The Maple Leaf dollar buried in America's home ice turned out to be a golden omen for Canada. The Canadians finally ended an agonizing 50-year wait for the Olympic gold medal in their national sport, beating the United States as Jarome Iginla and Joe Sakic each scored twice in a historic 5-2 victory Sunday. "We're a hockey power in the world," goaltender Martin Brodeur said. "Winning the gold kind of reassures Canada." The loss ended U.S. coach Herb Brooks' quest to lead a second gold-medal winning team 22 years after the famous "Miracle on Ice" with a group of college players. "Our attitude coming into this game was we're the better team, we've got to go out there and prove it," U.S. captain Chris Chelios said. "But today, Canada was better." Maybe it was because the Americans really didn't have the home-ice advantage.

      The Winter Olympics
The move toward a winter version of the Olympics began in 1908 when figure skating made an appearance at the Summer Games in London. Ten-time world champion Ulrich Salchow of Sweden, who originated the backwards, one revolution jump that bears his name, and Madge Syers of Britain were the first singles champions. Germans Anna Hubler and Heinrich Berger won the pairs competition. The Games resumed in 1920 at Antwerp, Belgium, where figure skating returned and ice hockey was added as a medal event. Sweden's Gillis Grafstrom and Magda Julin took individual honors, while Ludovika and Walter Jakobsson were the top pair. In hockey, Canada won the gold medal with the United States second and Czechoslovakia third. Seventy years after those first cold weather Games, the 17th edition of the Winter Olympics took place in Lillehammer, Norway, in 1994. The event ended the four-year Olympic cycle of staging both Winter and Summer Games in the same year and began a new schedule that calls for the two Games to alternate every two years.

History of Ice Hockey Canada is widely regarded as the home of ice hockey because that is where the official rules were developed and the game was first played in an organized way. Most often, Montreal is mentioned as the place where the game was born. In Montreal, members of McGill University Football Club played an exhibition match in 1875. Ice hockey was imported to Europe in the late 1800's. We take a look back at some of the finest moments in hockey video game history...
With the possible exceptions of Wayne Gretzky and ESPN, hockey video games have done more for the growth of the NHL into new markets than anything else. Every year, hundreds of thousands of college students pass their free time playing video hockey; many of them have never even watched an NHL game.
Starting with EA Sports' NHLPA '93 for the Sega Genesis, these hockey video game fans were suddenly familiarized with NHL stars like Roenick, Fedorov, and Yzerman. From there, things took off, and today's video games feature super-realistic graphics with accurate renderings of each player's actual face.
Here's a quick tour of the history of hockey video games, complete with screenshots from your favorite games of the past...

There cannot be a "history of hockey video games" without first mentioning PONG. This game, released in 1975, was one-on-one hockey in its rawest form. However, this original version of PONG could have just as easily been considered video ping pong, tennis or volleyball - it was that primitive. The first version of hockey "PONG" was actually produced by a company called Telegames and sold at Sears stores. This game system was designed to compete with PONG. Shortly after the release of Telegames' "Hockey-Tennis" game, the producer of PONG released PONG III, which contained a hockey version. PONG IV, a more-advanced versions of PONG, had different game options - the hockey option some very basic hockey-style accoutrements on the screen. This game was in color, unlike previous versions.

Adapted From: Hockey For Dummies, 2nd Edition
    • A newspaper account of a game between two unnamed women's teams appeared in the Ottawa Citizen on February 11, 1891.tabmark
The women's game caught on fairly quickly after that, and in 1894, a female club team formed at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Dubbed the "Love-Me-Littles," the team incurred the wrath of the school's archbishop, who did not want the young women to play. Two years later, women's teams started at McGill University in Montreal and in the Ottawa Valley. The first women's hockey championship for the province of Ontario was held in 1914, and in 1916 the United States hosted an international hockey tournament in Cleveland, featuring American and Canadian women's squads.
    Popularity wanes, then rebounds
Unfortunately, the popularity of women's hockey started to decline in the 1930s and 1940s, mostly as a result of the demands of the Depression and World War II. However, those rather dark years did produce one of the greatest women's hockey teams of all time: the Preston Rivulettes, who lost only twice in 350 Canadian league games during a stretch from 1930 to 1939. Women didn't start getting back into the game in a big way until the mid-1960s. In 1967, for example, a Dominion Ladies Hockey Tournament was held in Brampton, Ontario, with 22 teams and players ranging in age from 9 to 50 competing. And by the 1970s, things had really picked up. A number of Canadian provinces established associations during that decade to govern female hockey programs. At the same time, several American colleges and high schools began forming varsity and club teams for women players. And overseas, club squads and leagues began taking shape in places like Finland, Japan, Sweden, China, Korea, Norway, Germany, and Switzerland.

How do you determine the complex origins of a game that has evolved over the last two hundred years? For historians, a raging debate about the origin of hockey is an intriguing puzzle, filled with missing pieces and heated arguments over a stretch of ice and homemade sticks. Hockey is an indelible aspect of Canadian culture. From the local rinks to the now closed Maple Leaf Gardens, boys and girls, men and women, young and old, have laced their skates, dropped the puck on the ice and scored goals to bring their teams to victory. The game itself is as familiar as Hockey Night in Canada , and yet, there is no definitive story behind the creation of the game itself. As feisty as sudden death overtime in the Stanley Cup playoffs, there are varied and diverse claims to the origins of the game. Did hockey develop in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Montreal, Quebec or Kingston, Ontario? Each Canadian city has a distinct and unique claim to the game; however, no one can provide a definitive end to the debate.
