History of Hockey

Oct 5, Tuesday, 1999.

Buried deep in Egypt’s Nile Valley lies the village of Beni Hasan, known for its ancient cliff tombs dating from 2000 BC. A drawing decorates one tomb, showing two men holding sticks with curved ends and standing over a ball. Add synthetic turf and shin guards, and it might pass for hockey at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
One of the world’s oldest known sports, hockey predates the Ancient Games of Olympia by perhaps 1200 years or more. Indeed, historians believe it existed in many of the world’s early civilizations.
The Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Persians and Ethiopians all played variations of the game. Several centuries before Christopher Columbus found his New World, the Aztec Indians were playing it in Central America. The Araucano Indians of Argentina invented a game similar to hockey called Cheuca, believing it would make them better warriors.
Yet, the term `hockey’ is believed to be of French origin. A 16th century Irish document refers to `hockie’, but the term probably comes from the French hocquet, meaning `a shepherd’s crook.’
The modern game we know as hockey - or field hockey, for those distinguishing it from ice hockey - evolved in the British Isles in the 19th century. It was a popular English school game, possibly adapted from the Irish game of hurling.

Do You Believe in Olympic Moments?
Some Olympic memories will never fade
By Dave Schaefer // usolympicteam.com
(March 1, 2001) I was nine years old when Mike Eruzione and the boys beat the Russians and went on to win an improbable Olympic gold medal in Lake Placid in 1980 in hockey. Twenty-plus years later, it's hard to separate what might be my authentic memories from all the recountings and replays since, but I count the "Miracle on Ice" as one of my first sports memories. And it might just be the best. Remembering "The Miracle on Ice" got me thinking about other unforgettable Olympic moments since then. Admittedly, Bud Greenspan I am not. This is not an Olympic historian's list, but rather an Olympic fan's perspective. You'll notice the "glamour" sports dominate my list - I guess that's why they are glamour sports. But should a Jean Racine or a Todd Lodwick from Nordic combined break through with an Olympic moment of their own in 2002, they're sure to make not only history, but also my unforgettable moments. In chronological order, here's one man's vote for the 10 most memorable U.S. Olympic Winter Games moments since 1980. Do you agree? Did I miss someone? Let me know your thoughts by

The small village of Lake Placid is world-famous as the host of the Winter Olympic Games in 1932 and 1980, but its place in the sporting world goes beyond that. Lake Placid attracts world-class athletes for the current world championship events. As well, Olympic athletes currently use Lake Placid as a training facility for many Olympic sports.
Lake Placid is also the home of U.S. sports governing bodies such as the U.S. Luge Association, U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, as well as the U.S. Canoe and Kayak teams.

Hockey first arrived in 1961 when the Eastern Hockey league's Knoxville Knights took the ice for the first time. Guy Smith III, coach of the Jr. Knights, helped found the club in 1966 for students at UT interested in the game of hockey. The team competed against local men's league and corporate teams for its first few years of existance. Then, on November 18th, 1967 the team would open intercollegiate play, as they dropped the puck against the University of Miami (Ohio) at the Ice Chalet. Tennessee would face a variety of hockey powers in its infancy such as Illinois, Purdue, Ohio University, and Rutgers. A heated rivalry was formed with Georgia Tech, the only other team in the south at the time. The two teams would square off numberous times in Atlanta's Omni after games of the Atlanta Flames. The 1997-98 edition of the Ice Vols, coached by Dean Anderson, enjoyed great attendance and support. The team, led by players such as Derek Brunett, Scott Chamberlain, Dennis Helling, and captain Rob Kinsella went an incredible 14-5-1. Unofrtunatly, graduation and financial difficulties would hamper the team, and the team would fold after the '98 season.

WINTER OLYMPIC HOCKEY - DID YOU KNOW? The first Olympic ice hockey games were played in April, 1920 and, along with figure skating, were part of a spring festival in conjunction with that summer's Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. The inaugural Winter Olympic Games were held in 1924.
At the 1920 Games , ice hockey was played with seven men per side, similar to the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, the top pro league on the west coast of Canada and the United States. Matches were played in two 20-minute halves, and no substitutes were allowed. If a player was injured, someone on the other team sat out to equalize the squads.
Gerry "George" Geran , a member of the United States team in 1920, was the first Olympian with NHL experience. He played four games with the Montreal Wanderers in 1917-18.
Jackie McLeod Jackie McLeod , who played parts of five seasons with the Rangers in the 1950s, was the coach of the Canadian Olympic Team at the 1968 Games in Grenoble, France. McLeod tallied 14 goals and 23 assists for 37 points in 106 games with the Blueshirts from 1949-50-1952-53 and 1954-55.
Bobby Rousseau , who played 15 seasons in the NHL with Montreal, Minnesota and the Rangers, was a member of the 1960 Canadian Olympic Team. Rousseau registered 157 points (41 goals, 116 assists) in 236 career matches with New York from 1971-72 to 1974-75.

BBC Sport's Bob Ballard looks ahead to the ice hockey at the Winter Olympics. If you think England's 36 years of hurt is bad enough in wanting football's biggest prize to come home - imagine what it is like for Canada in its desperation to reclaim Olympic gold after half a century. It was 1952 in Norway when the country that formed the basis of the game that we know today last took the honours by beating the United States. I believe that agonising wait could almost be over, and, indeed the final could be contested by the same two countries. On paper that would seem to be an absurd prediction.
Hasek's goal-tending won it for the Czechs
Neither country won a medal four years ago in Nagano, Japan, and the United States did not even reach the last four. But home advantage will play a great part in the outcome of this competition.

A.J. Mleczko
made history at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan by helping the U.S. Women's ice hockey team to an historic, first-ever Olympic Gold medal. A.J.'s scoring touch and dominating face-off ability were key elements in Team USA's undefeated run to Olympic Gold. One year later, A.J. made history again winning the Patty Kazmaier College Player of the Year Award and graduating cum laude from Harvard University. At the age of six, intrigued by the hockey teams coached by her father, A.J. traded in her figure skates and dresses for hockey skates and hand-me-down equipment. She quickly excelled despite carrying the burden of often being the only girl on all-boys' teams. In 1993, A.J. joined her older sister, Wink, on the Harvard women's ice hockey team, where her career was nothing short of legendary. By her junior year, A.J. was Harvard's all-time leading goal scorer. After her junior season, A.J. faced the most difficult decision of her young life. With one year remaining at Harvard, A.J. was also two years away from the debut of women's ice hockey in the Olympic Games. Despite being a collegiate star and a member of the National Team since 1995, A.J.'s place on the Olympic team was not guaranteed. National Team Coach Ben Smith challenged A.J. and other prospective Olympians who were still in college to devote themselves full time to hockey. For A.J., giving up her final year at Harvard, prolonging student loans, and putting her entire life on hold to chase a dream with no guarantee of even making the Olympic team was a daunting prospect.

Russian women's ice hockey team won bronze at world championship
For the first time in history the national women's ice hockey team of Russia won bronze medals at the world championship held in the USA.
In the hard-fought game for third place the Russian squad defeated Finland 2-1. Svetlana Trefilova scored the first goal at the 10th minute of the first period. The Finns (Karolina Rantamjaki) equalised when the game was 29 minutes old, but three minutes later Yekaterina Pashkevich netted the winning puck. Three minutes before the end of the game the Suomi players who had won the bronze at all the previous world championships removed their goaltender Tuula Puputti and dominated in their opponent's zone but the Russian players held out.
Yekaterina Pashkevich from Russia ranks fifth among the best scorers of the competition, having scored ten points (six goals plus four assists).
Canada won the gold already for the seventh time, having beaten the host team, the USA, in the final 3-2.
