Submit A Special Request The Modern Winter Olympics The move toward a winter version of the Olympics began in 1908 when Figure Skating made an appearance at the Summer Games in London. Ten-time world champion Ulrich Salchow of Sweden, who originated the backwards one revolution jump that bears his name, and Madge Syers of Britain were the first singles champions. German's Anna Hubler and Heinrich Berger won the pairs competition. Organizers of the 1916 Summer Games in Berlin planned to introduce a "Skiing Olympia," featuring Nordic events in the Black Forest, but the Games were cancelled after the outbreak of World War I in 1914. The Games resumed in 1920 at Antwerp, Belgium, where Figure Skating returned and Ice Hockey was added as a medal event. Sweden's Gillis Grafstrom and Magda Julin took individual honors, while Ludovika and Walter Jakobsson were the top pair. In Hockey, Canada won the gold medal with the United States second and Czechoslovakia third. Despite the objections of Modern Olympics' founder Baron Pierre de Coubertin and the resistance of the Scandinavian countries, which had staged their own Nordic championships every four or five years from 1901-26 in Sweden, the International Olympic Committee sanctioned an "International Winter Sports Week" at Chamonix, France, in 1924. The 11-day event, which included Nordic skiing, Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Ice Hockey and Bobsledding, was a huge success. The event was retroactively called the first Olympic Winter Games.

Game
The objective of the game is to score goals by playing a hard rubber disc, the puck, into one of the nets placed at opposite ends of the rink (the playfield). The players may control the puck using a long stick with a curved blade at one end. Players may also redirect or kick the puck with a skate (but not kick it into the goal) or with the hand (without closing the hand). A player scoring three goals in a single game is said to have scored a hat-trick . A "natural hat-trick" is when the player scores three goals consecutively. Click the link for more information.

Now, an injury has forced him to abandon that dream and turn professional. IN January of 2004, Casal was hurt durring the U.S. National Championships, and will not be able to make the Olympic team. Instead 18-year-old Junior Welterweight turned professional in March, signing a multi year contract with manager Shelly Finkel. Durring a sucessful amateur career, Casal won the 2002 National Junior Olympics the 2003 "under 19" World Chamtpionship and several New York State Golden Gloves Tiltles. None of the Buffalo/Rochester area sailors managed to qualify for the 2004 Olympics in recent trials at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Houston, Texas. U.S. Shocks Soviets in Ice Hockey, 4-3
By Leonard Shapiro
Washington Post Staff Writer
February 23, 1980; Page D1 When the final horn sounded, players, coaches and team officials poured onto the ice and mobbed goalie Jim Craig, who stopped 36 shots. (File Photo) The U.S. won on a 20-foot wrist shot by team captain Mike Eruzione, whose name means "eruption" in Italian, with 10 minutes remaining. "I still can't believe this has happened," Eruzione said. The United States, seeded seventh in the 12-team field at the start of the competition, clinched at least a bronze medal with the victory. Following the 3-3 tie between Sweden and Finland in last night's other game, based on the complicated point system for this tournament, the United States has three points, Sweden and the Soviet Union two each and Finland one. A victory against Finland by the United States Sunday would clinch the gold for the Americans regardless of the outcome of the Soviet Union-Sweden game. If the U.S. and Finland tie, a tie in the other, later game would give the gold to the U.S., as would a victory by the Soviets. A win by Sweden in that game, however, would give the gold to that country on the basis of goal differential. Sweden and the U.S. tied in their head-to-head encounter.

A new book presents a unique look at America's greatest athletes...
September 11, 2001 changed the face of the United States forever. Millions of people saw and experienced so many unforgettable images, whether they were up close or in the safety of their living room. The media's coverage of September 11th showed an assortment of pictures and video, many of which are documented in magazines and books and though this moment in American history is tragic, like life - good and bad go hand-and-hand. September 11, 2003 also showed the charitable and caring side of America's people. Donations and relief assistance came from millions of people. From everyday, blue collar workers to movie and sports icons, enormous amounts of time, hard work and financial offerings went to assist various relief funds.
"Since September 11th, you remember not to take life for granted. It was a horrendous tragedy that brought us back to reality and made us see that bad things happen. You have to be prepared for it and take life by the horns and live it."
-Brett Hull
Accompanying each athlete's photograph are their own words about their unique perspective on what it means to be an athlete in America. All contributors spoke about differently about their experiences. Brett Hull, for example, he recalls how his first patriotic memory came in at the bicentennial of 1976. "I was ten years old and I remember watching it on TV, they had all the ships in the harbor, for me it was an eye opening event on how people love the country. It was unforgettable." For Jeremy Roenick, his earliest image comes from the time when the US hockey team won the gold medal against Russia in the "miracle on ice" game of 1980. "Jim Craig was standing on the blue line with the flag over his shoulder looking for his dad. To me that was a symbol of patriotism."

In the semifinals set for Friday, Canada will face the Czech Republic for a chance to play in the gold medal final of the inaugural ''dream tournament,'' featuring the top professionals for the first time in Olympic history. And while Canada won on Wednesday, Kazakstan goalkeeper Vitaliy Yeremeyev turned in a solid game, stopping 33 shots and preventing the score from being worse than it might have been against the North American National Hockey League (NHL) stars. ''There was a 10-minute span in the first period where we didn't play well, in the second and third period we started to play with patience and perseverance and got the puck deep into their zone. I thought the Kazaks played with grit and heart,'' said Canadian coach Marc Crawford. Canada took a slim 2-1 lead into the second period and scored two goals within thirty seconds of each other to put the game away.

Kirsi Haenninen scored a hat trick and Hanna-Riikka Nieminen netted two goals to propel Finland to an 11-1 rout of host Japan in the Nagano Olympic women's ice hockey preliminary round Monday. Finland, considered a medal contender in the six-team tourney, went ahead three minutes and 54 seconds into the game at the Aqua Ring ice arena in Nagano with a Sanna Lankosaari shot from the slot on a pass from Katja Riipi. The forward combination then made it 2-0 at 18 minutes and 45 seconds into the game when Riipi slapped a rebound past Japanese goalie Haruka Watanabe following Lankosaari's powerful shot from a face-off circle. Finland, fresh from a 6-0 shutout of Sweden on Sunday in the first women's ice hockey game in winter Olympic history, completely controlled the game and drove up its onslaught later in the contest. Haenninen scored two goals in the second period and added another in the third to complete her hat trick, while Nieminen scored twice in the third as Finland blew the game open with six goals.

Winter Olympics primer Ice Hockey: Checks and balance
Know the rules
There are some notable differences between Olympic ice hockey rules and NHL rules. 1. Icing

Icing occurs when a player sends the puck from his or her side of the center line to the other goal line. In the NHL, icing is waived off if the player's teammate touches the puck before the other team. In the Olympics, icing is called as soon as the puck crosses the goal line. Play resumes with a faceoff in the defensive zone of the team that iced the puck. 2. Rink
The Olympic hockey rink is wider than NHL rinks and has more room between the goal line and the boards. 3. Zero tolerance for fighting Don't expect to see NHL-style brawls. In Olympic hockey, fighting is penalized with automatic ejection. Just back off Maybe the most important distinction between Olympic hockey and NHL hockey is in the crease. Ones to watch Canada has dominated women's ice hockey, winning all seven world championships. At the 1998 Nagano Olympics, however, it was the Americans who prevailed, with a stunning 3-1 victory over Canada in the gold medal game. The U.S. team has enjoyed recent success in the rivalry, stringing together five straight wins over the Canadians in 2001. The teams enter the Salt Lake Games as the clear favorites to battle for the gold. Sources: International Olympic Committee; U.S. Olympic Committee; Salt Lake Organizing Committee

The country that invented snowboarding schooled the rest of the world in Salt Lake City. Americans won five medals in snowboarding - including gold medals in the halfpipe from Kelly Clark and Ross Powers. Canadian Hockey
Canada made up for a 50 year drought by winning the gold medal in women's and men's ice hockey. The Canadian girls beat the US 3-2 to revenge a loss in the gold medal game at the 1998 Olympics. The men's final featured two teams made up of NHL All-Stars. The Canadian lineup included Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic and Paul Kariya. The American team featured such super snipers as Brett Hull, Brian Leetch and Mike Modano. The Canadians won the game 5-2, causing wild celebrations across Canada. The last time Canada won a gold medal in ice hockey was at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, Norway. Ghosts and Skeletons
Jimmy Shea used the death of his grandfather as inspiration and won gold in the men's skeleton race.

[Olympics Main] [Getting In Shape] [Safety Tips] ... [Ice Hockey] HISTORY Men's ice hockey While the origins of ice hockey are unclear, it's widely accepted that the British are responsible for bringing hockey to North America. Soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, played the earliest games. By the 1870s, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal were organizing games and had developed the first known set of hockey rules. In accordance with this new set of regulations, known as "McGill rules," a puck was substituted for a rubber ball, and the number of players on a team was set at nine. In 1885, Montreal became the site for the first national hockey organization. The Amateur Hockey Association of Canada was founded and further reduced the number of players to seven. The sport's first league of four teams was formed that same year in Ontario. Ice hockey migrated south to the United States in the 1890s. The first known hockey games took place between Johns Hopkins and Yale Universities in 1895. Although hockey was a national pastime in Canada, the United States was the first country to organize a professional league. Formed in 1903 and based in Houghton, Michigan, the Pro Hockey League included teams and players from both Canada and the U.S. The league folded three years later, and in 1910, the National Hockey League was formed.

UConn Ice Hockey Head Coach Bruce Marshall
In his 15 seasons at the helm of the Connecticut men’s ice hockey program, head coach Bruce Marshall has made strides no other UConn ice hockey coach has made and proven the Huskies worthy of their recent Division I status. In UConn’s second season as a Division I program in 2000 and as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Marshall and the Huskies earned their first-ever conference championship in a 6-1 win over Iona in the 2000 Easton/MAAC Championship game. After posting a 20-10-4 record in the 1998-99 season, the second 20-plus season in the program’s history, the 1999-2000 season added a 19-16-1 record, including winning the MAAC title.
