It was 20 years ago Tuesday when the U.S. Olympic hockey team made us believe in miracles. The young Americans' upset of the mighty Soviets in the 1980 Winter Olympics remains one of the great moments in sports history. ESPN.com's Ray Ratto says it wasn't just the game that it made it the Miracle on Ice; it was the timing and context of it. The Cold War was at one of its peaks, and the Russians seemed invincible , especially on the ice. All that changed Feb. 22, 1980.

Ice hockey was on the 1920 Summer Olympic program and moved into the inaugural Winter Olympics in 1924. A round-robin tournament was used to determine medal standings until 1992. Since then, the top six countries from the previous Winter Olympics automatically qualify, and eight other teams are split into two pools for round-robin competition to determine two additional qualifiers. The eight qualifying teams then play a single-elimination tournament. The score of the gold medal game is shown from 1992 on. Women's ice hockey became an Olympic sport in 1998.

    Hungary in 1927 in Vienna.
To start with, Magnus, the president at the time of foundation, replaced the acting president van den Bulcke, but he resigned immediately because the delegates did not follow his programme. Vice president Patton then moved up as president and immediately called new elections with the result that van den Bulcke once again became president and Patton himself vice president.
Just a few months later, World War I hit also the sports world. During the war, there were no LIHG activities, neither at the sports field nor in the administrative area.
After World War I, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) expelled the "war losers" Germany and Austria from their ranks. The LIHG followed this decision in 1920, and at the same time, the membership of Bohemia was transferred to the newly established Czechoslovakia (TCH).
At the LIHG congress which was held during that first Olympic ice hockey tournament, Canada and USA were admitted on 26 April 1920 as new members thus extending the federation beyond Europe. The LIHG leadership was totally replaced in Antwerp: Acting president was now the Swiss Max Sillig, who was at that time still actively playing, the two vice presidents were the Belgian. Paul Loicq and the American Frank Fellowes.
In 1929, the congress decided in Budapest to organize from 1930 world championships every year, whereby the best placed team from Europe should win the title of European champion.

A Vintage Pair of Ice Skates 1924 marked the year of the first official Winter Games, and for the first time events such as figure skating, speed skating, Nordic skiing, bobsleigh, and ice hockey were held at a separate celebration than the Summer Games. Taking place in Chamonix, France, 294 competitors were involved in the first official Winter Olympics. The number of athletes participating in Salt Lake City is projected to be over 2,300. Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie made her debut at the 1924 Games, at age 12, and in 1928, 32, and 36 took home the gold medals. In 1937 Henie took advantage of her world popularity and appeared in her first movie. Her Hollywood career would last over 10 years.

in Davos, Switzerland With the world at war in the 1940s the scheduled games in 40 and 44 were cancelled. As punishment for their roles in WW2, Japan and Germany's absence from Olympic ceremony would continue into the 1948 games in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Twenty-eight countries participated enthusiastically, and it was clear that the games had survived both the world's conflicts, and the 12-year span between the last Olympics. The IOC awarded the 1976 Olympics to Denver, Colorado, but after two years of preparation and financial squabbling, the people of Colorado refused to fund the major event through public taxes. Innsbruck offered to host the Winter Olympics only twelve years since it last played the role, and the underplayed event went off peacefully and without excessive spending.

Al Bello/Allsport HISTORY Ice hockey emerged in the early 1800s as a cross between English field hockey and Indian lacrosse. The sport spread across Canada, played by Scottish and Irish immigrants as well as British soldiers. Athletes blended field hockey rules with an on-ice game created by the Micmac Indians of Nova Scotia. The first known organized women's hockey game takes place in Ontario, Canada. American dentist J.L. Gibson starts the first International Pro Hockey League, importing Canadian players to fill his teams. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is formed, using the French name Ligue Internationale de Hockey sur Glace (LIHG). Men's ice hockey debuts as an Olympic sport at the Summer Games held in Antwerp, Belgium. Canada captures the gold and the United States takes the silver. The Amateur Hockey Association of the United States (AHAUS), now called USA Hockey, Inc., is formed. At the Squaw Valley, Calif., Winter Games, the United States men's team wins its first Olympic gold medal. The victory increases the country's interest in the sport. High school programs begin feeding stronger players into the college hockey system. The Soviet Union men's team captures four straight Olympic gold medals.

    Ice Hockey
Hockey was first brought to North America when British soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, played the earliest games. By the 1870s, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal were organizing games and had developed the first known set of hockey rules. In accordance with this new set of regulations, known as the "McGill rules," a puck was substituted for a rubber ball and the number of players on a team was set at nine. The National Hockey League was formed in 1910; there are currently 30 clubs competing in the National Hockey League.
