Who were the Iberians? The existence of this Iron Age population on the Iberic peninsula has long attracted scientific and political interest. While some staged them as the true ancestors of a unified Spain, others claimed them for regionalist discourses. Franco's appropriation of the past to buttress the Spanish unification met the resistance of a number of scientists as well as the opposition of local and regional communities. The history of Iberian archaeology, therefore, is an unsuspectedly rich locus where the tensions between centralism and regionalism surface. On top of that, the widely-dispersed archives are a poorly understood source for this research. Theoretical bases of the project

The title of the meeting is 'The Archaeology of World Megalithic Cultures - Theme Session: Euro Mediterranean Megalithic Cultures 5,000-1,300 BCE'. The first annoncement and call for presentations (October 2003) says: "The various world cultures that developed megalithic monuments during prehistory are not well known. The origin of these peoples, the acquisition of masonry techniques, their sudden decline and disappearance, the lack of sufficient archaeological data concerning the interaction with neighboring people, the indirect and thus insecure dating of these monuments, the lack of ancient literature or insufficient historical accounts regarding their construction, the submerged underwater monuments, the trade of goods during the period of megalithic cultures, the lost lands on which once megalithic cultures flourished, and many more intriguing issues will be tackled under the newest available archaeological data.

Introduction The purpose of this text is to provide a general overview of the culture and is intended as a resource for students and teachers of European Archaeology.
Location
Bell Beakers are named after their bell shaped pots. The pottery occurs all over Europe from the Middle Danube to the Iberian Peninsula and from Ireland, Great Britain, and Denmark to Sicily and North Africa. Bell Beakers do not belong to a unified culture, but rather an interaction sphere, because there are considerable regional differences combined with an interregional system of shared symbols expressed in prestige goods.

Archaeological evidence on north African influence on Iberian populations discovered near Tetouan
Maghreb, Local, 4/9/2003 Archaeological evidence on North-African influence on Iberian populations were found in a cavern near the northern city of Tetouan, the Moroccan ministry of culture said in a release.
The searches, conducted in cooperation between Morocco's national institute of archaeology and heritage and Oxford University's archaeological institute, found human bones and stone tools that prove the existence of an influence of North-African populations on those of the Iberian Peninsula, especially in the Region of Cadiz in the period between 25,000 and 18,000 BC.
The searches had started March 1st in the caverns of Al Hattab and Kahf Elhmer, located respectively in the regions of Oulad Ali Mansour and Oued Laou.
Geological, historical and climate studies showed that between 25,000 and 18,000 BC, the Mediterranean sea level decreased by over 90 meters, which gave islets that made it easier to cross to south Europe, the release goes.
The populations that crossed to south Europe, limited in number used new stone tools, unknown in the region until then, the ministry of culture explained, adding that other searches will be led in a site called Aqbil.

That lack was remedied last year, at last: *+ . Maria Cruz Fernandez Castro. Oxford and Cambridge, Massachusetts: Blackwell, 1995. A volume in 'A History of Spain', John Lynch, general editor. A fairly systematic treatment, with considerable bibliography and guidance, of the peninsula's archaeology from about 2600 BC on, but very much skewed toward the south and east. The English is not perfect, and chapter titles are actively misleading, but this is a valuable starting point for those topics discussed, and much less speculative than previous works in English.
