Developer Gives Up on Payette River Hydropower Project On October 18, just hours before an Idaho Department of Water Resources administrative hearing, Gem Irrigation District of Homedale, Idaho withdrew a water right application for a hydropower project on the North Fork Payette River between Smiths Ferry and Banks. The withdrawal is the final move in a struggle over hydropower development on the river that has spanned more than a decade and engaged hundreds of citizens and the state legislature. The river is one of Idaho's most famous whitewater boating spots and a scenic attraction for thousands of travelers on Idaho Highway 55 every year. The state river conservation organization Idaho Rivers United has been a vigorous opponent of hydropower development on the North Fork Payette River. Liz Paul, conservation director for Idaho Rivers United said, "I look forward to moving the North Fork Payette project to my dead hydro files and enjoying the free-flowing river with my family for years to come. This is a great event for everyone who has fought so hard for the North Fork, and it's an affirmation of our state protected river system." The application for diversion of 2,200 cubic feet per second (cfs) of water for hydropower was filed by Western Power, Inc. in 1986 and subsequently transferred to Gem Irrigation District. In 1991 dam opponents succeeded in banning new hydropower from the North Fork Payette by winning legislative designation for the North Fork Payette as a state protected river, but Gem Irrigation continued their campaign to dam the river.

Electricity generation - whether from fossil fuels, nuclear, renewable fuels, or other sources - is usually based on the fact that: " When magnets are moved near a wire,
an electric current is generated in that wire.
"
In the picture, the shaft and armature (with copper wire) spin around. The magnets are on the outside (they don't move). Electricity, at the "+" and "-" terminals, is shown in the picture as a lighting bolt.
A "generator" and "motor" are essentially the same thing: what you call it depends on whether electricity is going into the unit or coming out of it. A generator produces electricity. In a generator, something causes the shaft and armature to spin. An electric current is generated, as shown in the picture (lighting bolt).

HYDROELECTRIC POWER. Hydro-electric power plants convert the kinetic energy contained in falling water into electricity. The energy in flowing water is ultimately derived from the sun, and is therefore constantly being renewed. Chilson William Patric, "Low-Head hydropower for Local Use", Environment, January/February
    http://www.iclei.org/efacts/hydroele.htm
    HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER
Hydro-electric power plants convert the kinetic energy contained in falling water into electricity. The energy in flowing water is ultimately derived from the sun, and is therefore constantly being renewed. Energy contained in sunlight evaporates water from the oceans and deposits it on land in the form of rain. Differences in land elevation result in rainfall runoff, and allow some of the original solar energy to be captured as hydro-electric power (Figure 1). Hydro power is currently the world's largest renewable source of electricity, accounting for 6% of worldwide energy supply or about 15% of the world's electricity. In Canada, hydroelectric power is abundant and supplies 60% of our electrical needs. Traditionally thought of as a cheap and clean source of electricity, most large hydro-electric schemes being planned today are coming up against a great deal of opposition from environmental groups and native people. FIGURE 1: Simplified view of the hydrologic cycle in which water is raised by solar energy and can perform work as it falls back to sea level (177K).
    History of Hydro Power
The first recorded use of water power was a clock, built around 250 BC. Since that time, humans have used falling water to provide power for grain and saw mills, as well as a host of other applications. The first use of moving water to produce electricity was a waterwheel on the Fox river in Wisconsin in 1882, two years after Thomas Edison unveiled the incandescent light bulb. The first of many hydro electric power plants at Niagara Falls was completed shortly thereafter. Hydro power continued to play a major role in the expansion of electrical service early in this century, both in North America and around the world. Contemporary Hydro-electric power plants generate anywhere from a few kW, enough for a single residence, to thousands of MW, power enough to supply a large city.

    Sierra Solar Systems Emergency Preparedness
Providing alternative energy solutions since 1980. We specialize in solar electric, wind, hydropower, and solar hot water systems for homes, boat, RV's and wells. We are based in the Sierra Nevada Foothills of California. Shipping is available anywhere. What do you need for emergency power for when the grid power goes out?
A good quality inverter/charger, such as the Trace DR or SW series, and a properly-sized bank of batteries may be all you need. Your batteries will be kept on float charge when the grid is working, and if it goes down, your loads can be automatically transferred to your inverter/battery system without missing a beat. Then, when the electric company is back on line, your loads will be automatically switched back to the grid.
What to do if you are concerned with the reliability of your power supply.... Alternative energy is not for everyone. It takes an extra amount of involvement and extra investment in the short run. Call it an investment in the future. What is required is living in a more conscious fashion than the average person. It implies taking an active part in how we use and produce power. If we'd prefer to let someone else, i.e. the power company, make these energy decisions for us, so be it. Rather than feeling powerless, some of us would rather take responsibility for where our power comes from and how it is used. It's just a part of reclaiming our personal power from the powers that be. For more information on emergency preparation, please visit the following pages........

    Inside: Hydropower Generator
    1. Water flows through the dam and turns a large wheel called a turbine. The turbine turns a shaft which rotates a series of magnets past copper coils and a generator to produce electricity. The process produces clean renewable energy. 2. The Kaplan Head is the hydraulic associated with adjustable blades on the turbine. Adjustable blades operate efficiently despite variations in water flow and energy demands. 3. The rotor is a series of magnets. It's the rotating portion of the generator where the magnetic field is created. 4. The stator is the stationary part of the generator made of coils of copper wire. Electricity is produced as the rotors spin past the stationary wiring. 5. The shaft connects the turbine to the rotor section of the generator. All three elements, the turbine, shaft, and rotor turn at the same speed of 90 revolutions per minute. 6. The wicket gates are a series of 20 adjustable vanes, resembling vertical blinds. They control the volume of water flowing through the turbine. 7. The 172 ton hydraulic turbine resembles a large water wheel. The turbine converts the energy of falling water into mechanical energy to drive the generator.
