Hydrogen Power: The "Post-Petroleum" Solution Did You Know...? While the current administration has begun to acknowledge the possibilities inherent in hydrogen power, the $1.2 billion it has allocated to jump-start the industry is miniscule compared to what is realistically needed to make the transition to a hydrogen economy a reality. If hydrogen is truly "America’s clean energy choice," as the Department of Energy has averred, the government must elevate hydrogen as a fiscal priority. It must redirect the multiple billions in subsidies and tax incentives it has traditionally showered on fossil fuels towards hydrogen, the 21st century's most promising alternative resource. NASA is already the primary user of hydrogen as an energy carrier. By becoming the fledgling industry's first major commercial customer and converting its own sizeable fleets and infrastructure to accept hydrogen, our government can accelerate the affordable mass production of hydrogen-ready technologies. This will contribute to economies of scale in their manufacture and price, and thus to improvements in production, delivery and use. It will thereby ensure hydrogen's broad-market application and appeal. With the public's convenient access to hydrogen thus assured, it can put its vast federal resources in service of a vigorous, credible public campaign to shed permanently the American habit of fossil fuel reliance.

Hydrogen is the simplest element. An atom of hydrogen consists of only one proton and one electron. But most importantly, it's the most plentiful element in the universe. However, for something so abundant, hydrogen doesn't actually occur naturally as a gas on the Earth-it's always combined with other elements. Water, for example, is a combination of hydrogen and oxygen (H O). Fuel cells have been designed to combine hydrogen and oxygen to form electricity, heat and water. If you imagine a conventional battery, it converts the energy created by a chemical reaction into electricity. Fuel cells do the same thing for as long as hydrogen is supplied. Fuel cells are being developed for providing heat and power to individual or multiple homes and for powering cars. They operate best on pure hydrogen, but other natural gases can be converted into hydrogen, too. Did you know: Woking's leisure centre was the UK's first building to receive its heat and power from a fuel cell? Find out more at www.woking.gov.uk/cgi-bin/archive.pl?item=1004693739

Description
The International Journal of Hydrogen Energy provides scientists and engineers throughout the world with a central vehicle for the exchange and dissemination of basic ideas in the field of hydrogen energy. The emphasis is placed on original research, both analytical and experimental, which is of permanent interest to engineers and scientists, covering all aspects of hydrogen energy, including production, storage, transmission, utilization, as well as the economical, environmental and international aspects. When outstanding new advances are made, or when new areas have been developed to a definitive stage, special review articles will be considered. To encourage the exchange of ideas, a section of the journal is devoted to discussing previously published papers. As a service to readers, an international bibliography of recent publications in hydrogen energy is published quarterly.

Government of Canada to fund Solar Hydrogen Energy Corporation's Process for Producing Hydrogen from Water Vapour
April 21, 2003
SASKATOON, April 21, 2003/ - SHEC LABS - Solar Hydrogen Energy Corporation announced that it has signed a contribution agreement with the CANMET Energy Technology Centre of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). Under the agreement NRCan will provide SHEC LABS with $200,000 towards a $454,000 project to help further advance its Thermocatalytic Hydrogen Production Process. The remainder of the funding is being provided by SHEC labs. "The Government of Canada is committed to the development of clean energy technologies that will help reduce emissions associated with climate change," said Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources Canada. "SHEC labs' technology to produce hydrogen will not only help reduce emissions but will contribute to building Canada's hydrogen economy." SHEC labs is a research and development company that was incorporated in 1996 and has developed a number of technologies for the solar thermo catalytic production of hydrogen. The process developed by SHEC labs dramatically lowers the temperature at which hydrogen can be extracted from water. At the heart of the technology is a proprietary catalyst conceived and invented by SHEC labs.

OAKLAND, Calif. Apr. 27, 2004 Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit, Oakland, Calif.) and ChevronTexaco (San Ramon, Calif.) announced an innovative cooperative agreement to build a state-of-the-art hydrogen energy station in Oakland, Calif., that will produce hydrogen fuel for fuel cell fleets. The hydrogen will fuel AC Transit's fleet of 40-foot Van Hool/UTC/ISE fuel cell buses and future fleets of light duty vehicles (cars, SUVs, and small trucks) in support of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's vision of a hydrogen highway network in California. The station will have the additional capability of utilizing excess hydrogen production to generate high quality electrical power from a stationary fuel cell.
Dr. Donald Paul, ChevronTexaco's vice president and chief technology officer, unveiled an image of the AC Transit/ChevronTexaco hydrogen energy station during a keynote speech at the opening session of the National Hydrogen Association's annual conference in Los Angeles, Calif. The station is under development and is scheduled to be completed by August 2005. Unique to the station's design is the use of small scale, onsite steam reforming of natural gas, to produce hydrogen in the most cost efficient manner for commercial applications. This approach is consistent with the findings cited in the recent National Academy of Engineering report on the hydrogen economy.
