The technology, based on a novel metallic hydrogen storage system, may also be modified for use in cars. This report discusses the technology used in the hydrogen-powered motorbike, its relevance to India, and problems that researchers are facing in their attempts to move this technology into the marketplace. The report also outlines research at a few select Indian laboratories aimed at finding new ways to produce hydrogen for use as an alternative fuel. KEYWORDS: Energy, Power Sources COUNTRY: India

http://www.h2net.org.uk/
H NET The UK Hydrogen Energy Network The Hydrogen Economy NEW ADVANCE WARNING: H2NET's Annual Conference 2004 will be held at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory on Wednesday 14 July 2004 The UK Hydrogen Energy Network (H2NET) was established in April 2000 as a joint collaboration between UK industry and academia interested in the development of hydrogen as an energy vector. Concerns over the adverse effects of continuing fossil fuel consumption, such as global climate change and urban pollution, have led to consideration of alternative, 'clean', energy sources. The term hydrogen economy describes an overall national energy infrastructure based on hydrogen produced from non-fossil primary energy sources. Within this concept, hydrogen is regarded as a suitable storage and transmission vector for energy from renewable or nuclear power systems, allowing the generator or utility increased flexibility in responding to fluctuations in wind or solar input or consumer demand, on a diurnal or seasonal basis. Hydrogen can be stored and transported in pressure vessels or transmitted by pipeline to the point of end-use. It is a versatile fuel, which can easily be substituted for traditional fuels, whether for stationary or transport applications, resulting in improved efficiency and negligible pollution. In the transportation sector, many automotive manufacturers consider hydrogen to be the leading contender for a new generation of highly efficient 'zero-emission' vehicles.

Renewable Hydrogen Energy System For Households Application Junlin Ma, P.R. China November 1999 Lund University International Master Programme in Environmental Science Abstract The purpose of the paper is to define and analyze a renewable hydrogen energy supply system for households use. The energy system combines solar energy, wind energy, hydrogen production, fuel cell and households energy supply. The components of the system are available, but have not yet to be integrated in this way. This study concentrates on solar energy as problems of wind energy are of similar nature. The main advantages and problems of this system are discussed from technical, economical and environmental aspects. The possibility of applying this system into China is discussed and evaluated. Calculations of components size are made based on a Chinese village. Tibet and Xinjiang Provinces are recommended as suitable regions for application of this system. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HYDROGEN ENERGY
http://www.elsevier.com/inca/publications/store/4/8/5/ The International Journal of Hydrogen Energy provides scientists and engineers throughout the world with a central vehicle for the exchange and dissemination of basic ideas in the field of hydrogen energy. The emphasis is placed on original research, both analytical and experimental, which is of permanent interest to engineers and scientists, covering all aspects of hydrogen energy, including production, storage, transmission, utilization, as well as the economical, environmental and international aspects. When outstanding new advances are made, or when new areas have been developed to a definitive stage, special review articles will be considered. To encourage the exchange of ideas, a section of the journal is devoted to discussing previously published papers. As a service to readers, an international bibliography of recent publications in hydrogen energy is published quarterly.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham and European Commission President Romano Prodi have agreed to implement an annex to the U.S.-EU Non-Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement that will help unify U.S. and European approaches to hydrogen energy research.
"This Annex is a key step to moving our joint agenda forward to expand the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel source," especially in the area of fuel cell research, said Abraham.
The Bush administration is expected to ask Congress for $1,200 million to fund a national commitment to develop hydrogen fuel cell cars.
