Garden Calendars Home

What a spring we have sprung! It has been glorious and we made it through fairly unscathed by late frosts. Our gardens have gotten off to a great start, so keep things going in the right direction, with proper maintenance. Water when dry, fertilize, and monitor for problems. Everyone seems to be in a planting frenzy. If you have visited any nurseries or garden centers lately, you know what I mean. From shrubs and trees, to container gardens, and vegetables, the plants are ready to be planted. Be sure when planting any plant, including summer annuals, to disturb the root ball. Rootbound plants will be slow to get established. Either cut the root ball with a sharp knife in a few places, or lightly pull them apart with your hands. You want to be sure that the roots get established as quickly as possible, so they can get into the serious business of growing. Avoid fertilizer in the planting hole, as this can burn tender new roots. Try some new plants along with your tried and true. You may find a new favorite. By now, all of your plants should have begun to show signs of life. Even the hardy hibiscus are popping up, and they wait until it has warmed up. Take inventory of any damage, and try to correct it. Central and south Arkansas hydrangeas seem to have made it through without damage, but many North Arkansas gardeners may be dismayed to notice that all their new growth is coming from the ground line, and they really do have some dead sticks. If that is the case, go ahead and cut out the dead wood, and get ready for a summer with no hydrangea blossoms. If this is a frequent scenario, you may want to plant some of the hydrangeas that bloom on new wood instead of old. Don't prune any summer hydrangeas that weren't damaged, as the flower buds are set in the old wood.

Big, bold, and showy hydrangeas Emily Goodman Special to The Christian Science Monitor - When I was a novice gardener, I didn't like hydrangeas; I found them, shall we say, Rubenesque. So I filled my shade garden with delicate, airy flowers and lacy foliage: columbines, bleeding hearts, ferns, sweet woodruff. Then one day, I looked around and noticed that my garden was too detailed. I had soulful little vignettes everywhere, but nothing bold on which to rest the eye, no effects that could even be seen several yards away. Besides that, all the flowers were over by early summer. That's when I started to appreciate hydrangeas.

Pastel overload? How to liven an excess of pink, yellow blooms By Valerie Easton

Special to The Seattle Times JULIE NOTARIANNI / THE SEATTLE TIMES E-mail this article Print this article Search archive Most e-mailed articles Other links More Valerie Easton Sign up for Gardening e-mail Q: My garden is full of pastels and looks insipid to me. I have lots of flowers, and I think I chose too many pinks and yellows. How can I liven it up? A: Bold and colored foliages will do as much to spark your garden as adding different flower colors, although a shot or two of bright orange or hot red probably wouldn't hurt, either. But I think you'll find that adding chocolate, gray-blue, yellow and burgundy foliages and large, textural leaves will make it possible to mix in brighter flower colors with your pastels without creating a cacophony of color. Also, try searching out blue flowers to bloom throughout the season, for a shot of blue effectively mitigates pastel sweetness. Good blues (in order of bloom, spring through autumn) include

August Gardening Tips
Hot August days really test your devotion to landscape care. Working outside this month is not very pleasant, but some plants do need attention.
If your azalea leaves, for example, look yellowish, they need more iron. This is commonly caused by high soil pH. You may be able to remedy this chlorosis by applying aluminum sulfate or a chelated [key-lated] iron compound to the soil around the base of the plant. Poor leaf color also may occur on gardenias, roses, camellias, hollies and centipede lawn grass.
Many azaleas are showing lace bug damage to foliage, similar to iron chlorosis symptoms. Apply
recommended insecticides when lace bugs are present, usually each spring and late summer/early fall. Recent LSU Agricultural Center research has shown that there are as many as five generations of azalea lace bugs every year in Louisiana.
During August be sure to water your chrysanthemums, because they'll quickly wilt without moisture. Overwatering, however, results in stem rot. Supply water around the base of the plants, not over the top of the foliage. Fertilize mums with a slow-release, complete, balanced fertilizer or apply a water-soluble fertilizer every week or so. Keep insects and diseases under control. Don’t pinch or prune chrysanthemums this month if you want them to bloom in the fall. But do prune hydrangeas if you haven’t already done so. On hydrangeas, remove the branches that had flowers this year. Branches that did not flower this year will flower next year.
