Hydrangeas
Written by Glyn Church Pat Greenfield
Published by Firefly Books (March 2001)
ISBN 1552095215
Price $16.95
Customer Reviews This is a terrific little inexpensive book on hydrangeas. It was published in 2001/2002 by a New Zealand horticulturist. The pictures are luscious and most are labeled with specific variety names. However, this is not just a coffee table book. It contains easy to understand, accurate information on growing hydrangeas. The chapter on pruning is excellent and includes a section on pruning tree form hydrangeas. I would highly recommend this book. Every page has color pictures on it. The bulk of the book describes each variety of hydrangea. There's a little info on planting. Gregg's Cobwebbed Welcome to my Flower (and Tree and Shrub) Garden! And info about Hydrangeas HYDRANGEAS The Easy, Tricky, Art to Pruning Them! The Hydrangea Macrophylla (mak-ro-FIL-a) - with the rounded blue to pink balls (mophead), or the flattened flowers (lacecaps), is a prime example of a shrub that is better not pruned at all, rather than to be pruned badly or too much. There is only one kind of hydrangea that blooms pink to blue - it is called Macrophylla. All the other kinds of hydrangeas bloom white! It is necessary to understand how they grow to maturity in order not to have to cut them back too drastically, because this produces weak, overlong shoots, which will droop under the weight of the flowers and leaves. The blue to pink is determined by soil pH - bluest color is produced in acidic soil, pinkest in alkaline soil. You cannot change a white blooming variety to blue or pink (and vice versa). Adding lime to the soil around the root area will encourage it to bloom more pink. Amending the soil with aluminium sulfate will encourage bluer blooms. This process takes about 1 year to show.

Hydrangeas and are widely acclaimed for their large, showy blossoms that lend fabulous color to gardens from mid to late summer. Their luxuriant dark green foliage offers a striking background to their large round or smooth blossoms. All hydrangeas are deciduous, and it's a sure sign of spring when their tender green leaves begin to appear. Hydrangeas are spectacular grown as single specimens and are fabulous when planted in mixed shrub borders.

Posted by fingerboard z7 MD ( My Page ) on Wed, May 12, 04 at 11:26 I live in Zone 7 and am helping a friend design her garden in Boston. What shrubs are shade tolerant and easy to grow in that area? She wants an easy care garden so I was thinking of Yews, boxwood and Azaleas but I think its too cold for those choices. Any help would be great. Thanks. Follow-Up Postings:

Dear Fellow GW alum (got my A.B. in '61) Your best bet would be a plant and shrub book such as Wyman's Gardening Encyclopedia. Donald Wyman wrote it while he was at Boston's Arboretum, so much of the info is local. If you are designing a garden for within the actual city, you already, as a landscape designer, know that this is zone 6. If your friend is in a Boston suburb, microzones vary. For Buxus, Wyman lists several varieties hardy to zone 5.
