Any suggestions on how to slow down the damage to plants from a growing deer population?
What is the best way to protect a screening of Hemlocks from disease?

Wooly Adelgids and Fiorinia Scale on Hemlocks (Tsuga) can be controlled if caught at the early stages of infestation. During March, after it warms up but before the new growth starts, spray the entire plant with dormant oil. It needs to dry 2-3 hours before the temperature drops below 32 degrees. A second application may be needed and can be applied in June to early July at a 1 oz. Dormant oil to 1 gal. of water ratio (follow the directions on the bottle regarding temperature range for applications). The spreading rate is approximately 3.5 oz. per gal. of water on your applicator. It is important to get as close to 100% coverage as possible. This means you'll need to spray up, under the needles. Dormant oil is organic and safe to use.

Of all the plants that garden designers Freeland and Sabrina Tanner grow in their Napa garden, oakleaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia 'Snowflake') is a standout. This 4-to 6-foot-tall selection looks good year-round. In mid-spring, 6-inch-long lime green and white flowers appear. As the season progresses, each floret produces a new one until, by the end of summer, the blooms extend to 12 inches or more. In fall, foliage turns shades of purple and red. The plants peeling bark is also attractive in winter. Plant 'Snowflake' in partial shade or in an area that receives only morning sun. Water regularly. If you can't find them at your local nursery, plants can be ordered from Hydrangeas Plus (www.hydrangeasplus.com or 866/433-7896).

http://www.cennet.co.uk/shrubs-hydrangea-potentilla-robinia.html
Hydrangea
The group consists of hardy and tender shrubs and woody climbers.
They are mostly deciduous plants, though a few of the tender species are evergreen. They are natives of the Himalayas, North and South America, and central and eastern Asia.
These flowering shrubs have different flower forms - from the large globes of the "mopheads" to the discs of the "lacecaps" to the thick cones of oakleaf and panicle hydrangeas. They come in an array of colors from pure white to brilliant crimson, pale lilac to intense azure. Some varieties produce blossoms with two-toned colors, while some flowers have contrasting eyes, and some may even be speckled or striped with another color.
There are two kinds of florets in the flower heads.
The sterile or ray florets are male and form the large, colorful sepals on the outside of the flower head. The fertile or perfect florets are small and inconspicuous. They bear the male and female parts and are usually found in the center of the cluster. The flower heads of mophead hydrangeas consist almost entirely of sterile florets.
As well as their lovely flowers, some hydrangeas are valued for their attractive foliage or bark.

    Previously-answered questions:
Hydrangea: Flower color and soil acidity
    Q. Q. My large hydrangea bushes developed very unsightly pale greenish flowers last summer. How can I make them red or purple? A. The acidity or alkalinity of a soil influences the shades of color in our hydrangeas. When the blooms of some varieties develop muddy, indeterminate coloring it signifies a pH in the neutral range and no clear color directive to the flowers. Before taking steps to produce a certain color in hydrangeas you have to first consider what the flower color originally was, since different soil treatments will have different effects on the natural color of the variety. Red-flowering hydrangeas, for example, can be kept red or made more red by applying wood ashes, lime, or bone meal to the soil. All these materials have an alkaline effect on soils. Blue-flowering hydrangeas will turn pink in a neutral or alkaline soil. A friend of mine once asked me why one of her blue hydrangeas in a group of three had produced pink bloom. It turned out that the pink one was at the front of the grouping and had received a dumping of wood ashes late in the winter.
