They are easy to grow, dependable and improve with age. The mophead and lace-cap varieties of H. macrophylla are the best-known varieties. The showy flower parts are sterile florets and mopheads have these packed around the flower-head. Lace-caps have a single ring of showy outer florets. These surround a centre of fuzzy, fertile flowers, which are usually of a contrasting colour. History The mophead hydrangea goes back to Japan where native species with normal lace-cap flowers had been grown in gardens for hundreds of years. At some stage one of these plants is thought to have sported, or naturally mutated, and produced spherical heads full of sterile flowers, instead of just arranged at the edge. When these plants first reached the west in the 18th century they caused a sensation, initially being treated as tender and grown indoors.

On an established plant this is simply a case of removing about a third of the older, less productive stems and cutting back old flowering stems to a strong pair of buds. Leave old flower-heads on their shoots during the winter to give frost protection to the delicate new growth just below. They look fantastic when their brown, papery domes are covered with frost. Left unpruned, hydrangeas will continue to bloom but the size of the flower-heads will be reduced by the overcrowded stems. Look for another technique: Select article and GO! 3311 - Hydrangeas for St. Louis
Hydrangeas are medium to large shrubs noted for their small, clustered flowers that are often used in fresh or dried arrangements. The key is to let the blooms get fully mature before cutting. For dried arrangements, leave the water level low and let it run out the blooms will dry in an upright position or clip and bundle with a rubber band to let dry upside down in the garage. Smooth hydrangea ( Hydrangea arborescens ) is a native shrub to Missouri. It produces white blooms in early summer and likes some shade where the soil remains moist. It is subject to wilting in dry soils, so avoid west exposures where it's hot. These plants bloom on new growth, so can be cut back each season. 'Grandiflora', otherwise called hill-of-snow, is a popular cultivar. Similarly, ‘ Annabelle' is another good choice with bigger and more numerous blooms. For both, some deadheading will prolong the bloom into fall. Panicle hydrangea ( H. paniculata

UNLEASH YOUR HYDRANGEAS FLOWER POWER!
Secrets of proper care and feeding for your hydrangea
pruning hydrangeas as well as other factors that affect color, growth and health. Hydrangea color
The other big question with feeding hydrangeas is flower color. Acid soils give us blues and baser soils cause pink flowers. The key is aluminum ions in the soil, so aluminum sulfate is a good quick fix, but prolonged use year after year may cause a fatal build up in the soil. Iron sulfate is a safer fix, or try alternating. If pink is what you want, top dress with dolomite or drench with a quick lime solution. Failure to flower: frost and late pruning
Hydrangeas fail to flower for several reasons. Most common would be frost damage, followed very closely by late pruning. Too much shade or nitrogen are other likely culprits, but lets look at siting our plant and pruning as our best controls. If your hydrangea is not flowering look at your growing practices and where you have it planted and make appropriate changes.
