The Hurricane Hunters Our Air Force Reserve crews have completed their week-long patrol in Hurricane ISABEL . This hurricane came on the heels of one of our busiest periods, when we literally launched aircraft in three different directions simultaneously (the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and Central Pacific). During that flurry of activity, we covered Hurricane JIMENA, major Hurricane FABIAN, Tropical Storms GRACE and HENRI. That's what we're here for. Note: When there is an active storm, see our latest reports and visit the National Hurricane Center for bulletins and advisories, and if you're under threat, please tune in to your local media. The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, known as the Hurricane Hunters of the Air Force Reserve , is one-of-a-kind: the only Department of Defense organization still flying into tropical storms and hurricanes since 1944 . Our ten Lockheed-Martin WC-130 aircraft and crews are part of the 403rd Wing , based at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Food Safety in Hurricanes and Floods
Advance preparation is a key to food safety during a hurricane and the floods that can accompany it. Those living in hurricane areas should keep adequate supplies on hand because power will likely be disrupted, putting food in danger.
EMERGENCY SUPPLIES
  • Food and water for four to five days Hand can opener Battery-powered radio Extra batteries Camp stove or other emergency cooking equipment Flashlights, candles, matches, kerosene lamp Fire extinguisher and first aid kit
FLOODING AND FOOD
Flooding often accompanies hurricanes. Persons living in areas subject to floods should be ready to raise refrigerators or freezers by putting cement blocks under their corners. Canned goods and other foods kept in a basement or low cabinets should be moved higher. Flood waters may carry silt, raw sewage, oil or chemical waste. If foods have been in contact with flood waters, follow the "Safe Handling" recommendations.

Scientists Sharpen Tools for Tracking Hurricanes

For years, scientists have worked to develop powerful new tools to predict the paths of hurricanes and monitor their likely impact. Betty Ann Bowser reports on the latest technologies meteorologists are using to keep tabs on these devastating storms and what new tools are being developed. Almost two weeks after Hurricane Isabel's powerful winds and storms, thousands of East Coast residents continue to assess the full impact of the storm , which raced across the mid-Atlantic and up the Eastern seaboard in late September. One of nature's most powerful known forces , hurricanes can pack winds of more than 150 miles per hour and have been feared for centuries. Which hurricanes caused the most damage? The greatest number of deaths? What states are hurricanes most likely to hit?
