http://www.hdfoundation.org/hdroster.html
HUNTINGTONS DISEASE RESEARCH ROSTER
What is the Huntington's Disease Research Roster?
A research roster of Huntingtons Disease patients and families was established in 1979 at Indiana University in response to a recommendation from the Commission for the Control of Huntingtons Disease and its Consequences. The Roster is sponsored by the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke. Because the cooperation and assistance of HD patients and families is vital to research, we are asking your help. The HD Research Roster computerizes the names of families, including information about the history of HD in the family (family trees) and other related data. This information identifies HD patients and families who are interested in participating in research projects.
What does the Roster do? Many investigators are intrigued by Huntingtons Disease and are eager to work on the problem but need access to HD families. It is important to have a system whereby scientists and HD families can get in touch with each other. The Roster makes this happen by matching the scientist with the right research volunteers listed in the Roster. Some researchers only need statistical information while other special projects may require a sample of blood, urine or skin from HD family members. The people on the staff explain the particular research study to each individual or family. Then, if they are willing to participate and give written permission, the individual's family name and address are given to the investigator.

Huntington’s is an inherited genetic disease that destroys neurons in brain regions governing movement. Symptoms include involuntary movements, lack of coordination and cognitive difficulties. Huntington’s disease is thought to involve a bioenergetic defect. A pilot study conducted by Beal and associates showed that energy production in the central nervous system and muscle of Huntington’s disease patients is impaired. After two or more months of Coenzyme Q10 supplementation (360 mg per day), 83% of patients showed significant improvements in biochemical markers of energy production. See References back to top

Question Posted By: Sherry on Thursday, September 02, 1999
I just recently had got tested for Huntington's disease. I'm waiting for blood work to come back now. What are the chances of me actually having this disease if there is to my knowledge no family history of it? I've read a few things about it, wouldn't a parent know they have it? How long does it take for test results to come back? Answer Posted By: CCF neuro MD MM on Thursday, September 02, 1999
The chances of having Huntingtons Disease are extremely low if there is no family history of the disease, this would require a spontaneous mutation in your own DNA which probably occurrs in one in millions of cases, exact figures are not availavble since the incidence is so rare.
The only possible way a parent would not know about having the disease would be if the parent died in young adulthood from another cause before the disease had manifest itself but after children had been concieved.

Information about caring for people with Huntington's disease, for patients, families and professionals.
http://www.kumc.edu/hospital/huntingtons/
Caring for People with Huntington's Disease
Huntington's Disease is an inherited degenerative neuropsychiatric disorder which affects both body and mind. Symptoms most commonly begin between the ages of 35 and 50, although onset may occur any time from childhood to old age. Research is progressing rapidly, but there is currently no cure. Huntington's disease is inherited in an autosommal dominant fashion. Each child of an affected parent has a 50 % chance of inheriting the disease and is said to be at risk . The discovery of the HD gene in 1993 has made it possible to test at-risk individuals for Huntington's disease before symptoms occur. In the absence of a cure, however, the decision to be tested or not remains a difficult one, and there are many important legal, financial and personal considerations. For more information about the genetic basis of Huntington's disease, you may wish to visit the Online Mendellian Inheritance in Man (OMIN) to learn about the genetic basis or the DNA library at the National Library of Medicine to see the actual gene sequence. The clinical features of Huntington's disease can be thought of as a triad of emotional, cognitive and motor disturbances. Symptoms include chorea (dance-like involuntary movements), clumsiness, slurred speech, depression, irritability and apathy. Cognitive losses include intellectual speed, attention and short-term memory.

The course of Huntington’s is characterized by jerking uncontrollable movement of the limbs, trunk, and face (chorea); progressive loss of mental abilities; and the development of psychiatric problems. Huntington’s disease progresses without remission over 10 to 25 years and patients ultimately are unable to care for themselves. Huntington’s disease usually appears in middle age (30-50 years), but can develop in younger and older people.
