Z St. Elizabeth of Hungary Also called St. Elizabeth of Thuringia , born in Hungary , probably at Pressburg, 1207; died at Marburg, Hesse, 17 November ( not 19 November), 1231. She was a daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary (1205-35) and his wife Gertrude, a member of the family of the Counts of Andechs-Meran; Elizabeth's brother succeeded his father on the throne of Hungary as Bela IV; the sister of her mother, Gertrude, was St. Hedwig , wife of Duke Heinrich I, the Bearded, of Silesia, while another saint, St. Elizabeth (Isabel) of Portugal (d. 1336), the wife of the tyrannical King Diniz of that country, was her great-niece. In 1211 a formal embassy was sent by Landgrave Hermann I of Thuringia to Hungary to arrange, as was customary in that age, a marriage between his eldest son Hermann and Elizabeth, who was then four years old. This plan of a marriage was the result of political considerations and was intended to be the ratification of a great alliance which in the political schemes of the time it was sought to form against the German Emperor Otto IV , a member of the house of Guelph, who had quarrelled with the Church. Do not cite without permission) During the last several decades an increasingly stringent and attention-demanding web of human rights regimes has come into being as the result of the creation of a number of transnational bodies to which states, particularly in Europe, have ceded parts of their autonomy. As the countries of Central Europe attempt to integrate themselves again into Europe and gain entrance to such organization as the Council of Europe and the European Union, they have been expected to take on the full weight of these detailed human rights regimes and to conform the laws and behaviors of their governments and citizens to them. They have had to take on this obligation at the same time they are converting their economic and political systems in order to meet the standards of these same organizations, particularly the European Union (Preston 113).

Eighty percent of the votes had been tallied. Prime Minister Viktor Orban's conservative Fidesz alliance was running neck-and-neck with the Socialists, election officials said, with more than 41 percent of the vote. In third place, garnering more than 6 percent of the vote, was the Hungarian Free Democrats' Alliance a former coalition partner to the Socialists in the government, which ruled from 1994-98. The liberal Democrats' Alliance was poised to gain entry into the new parliament since only 5 percent of the vote is needed to secure representation. None of the other six parties running appeared to secure enough votes to reach that 5 percent threshold, election officials said.
