An overview of Hungary's history
To the east of the Alps a crescent of snow-capped mountains, the Carpathians, encloses an alluvial plain some tens of thousands of years ago it had been a huge inland lake interspersed with rolling hill country, protecting it from the open spaces to its north, east and south-east. In the south it terminates at the river Sava, beyond which the mountain ranges of the Balkan Peninsula rise, in the west at the foothills of the Styrian Alps. The Danube, foremost of Europe's rivers, enters it by the gap between the Carpathians' westernmost tip and the Styrian Alps; having collected the waters of all rivers that rise within or enter the basin, it breaks through the opposite end of the Carpathians at the Iron Gates. In the closing years of the 9th century a confederation of seven nomadic tribes, numbering perhaps a few hundred thousand people in all, crossed into this Carpathian Basin from the east, impelled to do so, if indirectly, by Byzantine foreign policy. Finding it well-suited to their pastoral-agricultural lifestyle, and sparsely populated, they rapidly occupied all of it, to settle there for good. The history of Hungary is the history of these people in this place from that time: their arrival there marks a break in the continuity, and a new beginning, in the history of the Carpathian Basin, as it does of theirs. Nothing that happened to them before carries over into what happened to them thereafter; nothing that happened in the place before Romans, Huns and a succession of other migrant peoples affected what happened thereafter.

    The Origin of Hungarians
As is the case with many other nations, the exact origin of the Hungarians is not known. The most commonly accepted guess in scientific circles is that their ancient homeland was somewhere in Western Siberia. This theory is very much supported by the fact that the Hungarian language is a branch of the

    History of Hungary
Hungary, officially the Hungarian People's Republic, is a landlocked country in central Europe covering an area of 35,921 square miles. The capital of Hungary is Budapest. Hungary is bordered by the former Czechoslovakia to the north, Romania and the former Soviet Union to the east, Austria to the west, and Yugoslavia to the south. Once part of the powerful Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hungary is now one of the smallest countries in Eastern Europe. Endowed with good natural conditions for farming and a diversified industry, Hungary is one of the most prosperous countries in the former communist block. In the beginning, the western part of what is now known as Hungary, was located in the Roman Empire while the area of the Danube River was occupied by various Germanic and Asiatic tribes. Around the fifth century, a Nomadic people known as Magyars, ruled under Arpad, began moving west into what is now Hungary. In 892, the Holy Roman Emperor Arnulf invited these people to help him get rid of the Moravians. The Magyars agreed and began to settle on The Great Hungarian Plain. The Magyars ravaged all of central Europe until they were defeated by Otto I in 955. Twenty years later, Arpad's grandson Geza, accepted Christianity. Geza's son, Stephen, was crowned king in the year 1000 and continued Hungary's Christianization and development. A devastating invasion by the Mongols killed half the population in 1241. This ended the reign of the Arpad dynasty, and from that date until 1918, Hungary was ruled, with one exception, by foreign powers.

HUNGARY The first small, hydrogen-filled experimental balloons (1784) are associated with the names of István Szablik and József Domin. In 1811, while traveling as a passenger on a gas balloon from Budapest to Gyöngyös (70 km), Dr. Menner dropped to earth various small domestic animals with little silk parachutes, unharmed. The first Hungarian balloon, the "TURUL", filled with lighting gas, rose with its two passengers to 4040 metres (13,255 feet) on its first aerial journey (1902) and landed smoothly. David Schwarz (1850-1897) said: "Dirigible aero-navigation can be attained with a rigid body of metal construction." In 1897 his truss girder structured airship, covered with aluminium sheets, achieved a speed of 35 km/h (56 mph). A Prussian officer as a "test-pilot" controlled the maiden flight. Lajos Martin (1827-1897) . A university lecturer, he became the first outstanding aeronautical experimentalist known worldwide. He suggested the use of aileron-surfaces in dynamic aviation. In 1893 his hovering wheel model, which applied one of the technological solutions of today's helicopters, reached completion. In 1896 Béla Tóth gave notice for the first Hungarian patent for an aeroplane.

    History
Hungary Table of Contents THE HUNGARIAN PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC emerged in 1949 after the Hungarian Workers' Party eliminated its rivals and assumed control of the state. Soviet control of Eastern Europe after World War II had enabled a minuscule communist party lacking popular support to gain power in the country and gradually eliminate its political rivals. Under Matyas Rakosi, the party consolidated its control and radically transformed the country economically, socially, and politically. In the mid-1950s, after the Soviet Union had somewhat relaxed its control of Eastern Europe, Hungarian society began to mobilize against the regime, culminating in the Revolution of 1956. Soviet troops crushed the rebellion, leaving power in the hands of Janos Kadar. After consolidating his authority, Kadar embarked on a program of economic reform in the mid-1960s. Despite internal divisions, strong foreign influence, and outright attempts to force the Hungarians to assimilate into other cultures, Hungarian nationalism has thrived throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Nationalism drove Hungary to ally itself with Nazi Germany to regain territories lost after World War I. Nationalism also inspired Hungarians to revolt against the Stalinist political order in October 1956. Hungary Table of Contents Source: U.S. Library of Congress
