Reference Specialist
General Characteristics
A small part of the Library of Congress's Hungarian collection dates back to the original holdings sold by Thomas Jefferson, whose library contained the six volume work Histoire des revolutions de Hongrie
Highlights in the Humanities and Social Sciences
The Hungarian collection in the humanities and social sciences has been systematically developed, and every attempt is made to fill lacunae where they exist. Besides material published in Hungary, the Library of Congress collects the writings of Hungarian minorities living in Transylvania (Romania), Slovakia, Ukraine, and the former Yugoslavia, as well as in Western countries. Stadium Politikai Program Die Reform in Ungarn (1846), the English-language translation The Village Notary Gondolatok (1864), and Other valuable first editions dating to this time but in a completely different field are A Grammar of the Tibetan Language in English and Essay Towards a Dictionary: Tibetan and English Interesting works of more recent vintage are registries of land ownership in Hungary published between the two World Wars. These are especially valuable to those who have returned to Hungary in the 1990s seeking to reclaim land that had been confiscated by the communist government in the late 1940s. Also of interest is the collection of Hungarian

Maps by Sebastian Munster.
Woodcuts. All in very good condition. Sebastian Munster (1489-1552) was one of the first great cartographers, working in the era before the Dutch “modern” cartographers such as Mercator and Ortelius. He studiously compiled the best information available in the sixteenth century, corresponding with scholars all around Europe and visiting bookfairs and libraries whenever possible. Munster issued many influential maps in his editions of Ptolemy’s Geographia and his own Cosmographia which were published beginning in 1540. Gerard Mercator. “Hungaria.” From the Mercator-Hondius Atlas . Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius, 1613. Engraving. 14 1/2 x 17 1/2. Full original color. Fine condition. Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) ranks as one of the greatest cartographers in history, not only for the extremely fine maps he produced, but also for the innovations which he introduced into cartographic science. Through his constant accumulation of new geographic and cosmological data, Mercator was able to produce the most accurate and current maps of his day, which unlike most of his contemporaries’ maps were mostly original work. This is a fine example of the Mercator map of Hungary from the 1613 edition of his

Twenty-Five Lectures on Modern Balkan History
Lecture 1: Geography and ethnic geography of the Balkans to 1500
Preface Complete list of lectures Next lecture One can't understand the Balkans without understanding its ethnic groups, and one can't understand the ethnic groups and their history without knowing the influence of the region's geography.
Even the geographic extent of the "Balkan" region is a matter of controversy. Many scholars, especially those writing in the Cold War era, have included only the Communist states and linked them with Czechoslovakia, Poland and East Germany, while omitting Greece and ignoring Turkey and the Ottoman era. Other historians exclude Hungary, Croatia and other Habsburg lands, because of their "central" European character, supposedly contrary to Balkan themes. But the presence of contradictory themes is itself characteristically Balkan.
For the purposes of this course of lectures, the Balkan area includes Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Romania, Albania and Hungary. Most of this area was once under Ottoman Turkish rule; the rest under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The lectures will not deal with all of the Ottoman Empire, which extended into Asia and Africa, or other former Habsburg lands such as Czechoslovakia and parts of Poland.
Physical geography
Balkan geography revolves around three features: the area's situation as a peninsula, its mountains, and its rivers.
