Geography
THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF HUNGARY lies in the central Danube Basin. With 92,103 square kilometers of territory, it is the sixteenth largest European country. The country's terrain consists largely of plains and hill country and is divided into three major geographic areas: the Great Plain, covering the central part of the country, the Transdanube in the west, and the Northern Hills along the northern border. The climate is mild and continental, although great contrasts in temperatures can occur. Hungary is roughly the size of the state of Indiana. It measures about 250 kilometers from north to south and 524 kilometers from east to west. It has some 2,258 kilometers of boundaries, shared with Austria to the west, Yugoslavia to the south and southwest, Romania to the southeast, the Soviet Union to the northeast, and Czechoslovakia to the north. Hungary's modern borders were first established after World War I when, by the terms of the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, it lost more than two-thirds of what had formerly been the Kingdom of Hungary and 58.5 percent of its population. With the aid of Nazi Germany, the country secured some boundary revisions at the expense of parts of Slovakia in 1938 and Carpatho-Ukraine in 1939 and at the expense of Romania in 1940. However, Hungary lost these territories again with its defeat in World War II. After World War II, the Trianon boundaries were restored with a small revision that benefited Czechoslovakia.

Geography of Hungary Hungary is a very tiny country in the heart of Europe - do Hungarian people say. Her area (93.011 km), and her population (10.050.000) is low in number indeed, but her turbulent history made Europe's heart beat more than once and today's life is bustling, too. During the past thousand years fate of the Hungarian nation and that of Europe was attached by thousands of closer or looser threads. "Where is Hungary situated? Hungary is often called a transit land, which is simply drifting in the stream or is desperately rowing between East and West. Though if you look for her in the middle-east of Europe, you will not find her there, as she is situated in the east-middle of Europe. This simple changing of words means a lot. Our scenery is exceeding the borders of the country, our history has always bound us to the neighbouring countries and their peoples by thousand of threads. The Danube strings us after the western European countries as a link of chain between the West and the East. Our country borders the very heart of the basin surrounded by the Middle-Danube Carpathians and the Alps. This region has special impacts and outcomes both in natural and social respect.

Hungary
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Hungary was part of the polyglot Austro-Hungarian Empire, which collapsed in World War I. It fell under communist rule following World War II. A revolt in 1956 and an announced withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact was met with massive military intervention by Moscow. In the more open GORBACHEV years, Hungary led the movement to dissolve the Warsaw Pact and steadily shifted toward multiparty democracy and a market-oriented economy. Following the collapse of the USSR in 1991, Hungary developed close political and economic ties to Western Europe. It joined NATO in 1999 and is a frontrunner in a future expansion of the EU.
