Joe Magarac

This stamp commemorates Joe Magarac. Joe Majarac was a man or thing made of steel. Joe lived in Hunkietown,PA. Noone ever knew who he was. All they ever knew was he laughed at a man in a contest and he nearly killed the man. He said he was just having a little fun. Then he lifted a bar that weighed 850 pounds and made it into a figure eight. Then he started to work at the steel mill. He worked so fast they had to shut the mill down.
When he mixed the melted steel he said it tickled his hand, that's because he was made of steel. He said he lived to work and eat. When he wasn't eating he was working and when he wasn't working he ate.
Pete Pussick worked at the mill. He too was Joe's friends. Pete won the prize at the contest, Big Steves' daughter Mary because Joe turned down the prize. Pete was so grateful he gave Joe all the food he wanted at the wedding.
The day the mill shut down every one was worried about Joe Magarac. When the mill reopened Joe was in the big vat of melted steel, melting away. Joe gave them instructions of what to do with him in the end. In my picture Joe Majarac is melting.

This stamp commemorates Joe Magarac the famous steelman. No one knows where he came from but he was born with steel in his body from head to toe.

Myths and legends reveal a people's innermost character, feelings, fears and desires. Thus, to understand the nature of Slavic peoples in its totality, one needs to look to Slavic mythology as it existed before the advent of Christianity. Most scholars in the English-speaking world have paid scant attention to Slavic mythology, and hitherto, just a handful of journal articles have touched on the subject. As a result, we have lacked a real understanding of the character of pre-Christian Slavic culture. This book marks an attempt to fill this gap. It represents the first collaborative narrative about Slavic mythology in the English language. Piecing together myths Unfortunately, unlike the Greeks, the pagan Slavs had no Homer who recorded early Slavic myths in epic literature. What we know about Slavic mythology is based upon oral traditions and scattered references in ancient texts. Artifacts from archaeological excavations have provided researchers with solid evidence that mythology played an integral role in early Slavic culture.

A WESTERNER'S (SURVIVAL) GUIDE TO THE CZECH REPUBLIC, PART VIII
On Czechs, the Great Myth-Makers Tomas Pecina Few nations have created so many myths about themselves as the Czechs. As with other national mythologies, Czech myths mostly concern the history and self-perception of the ethnic group. The most famous myth of the last century even took on literary form. There was much rejoicing among Czechs when, almost simultaneously, two seemingly medieval manuscripts were discovered in two different Bohemian towns, which not only emulated, but in some respects surpassed the famous German saga, the Nibelungenlied . However, their fame was short-lived. They were masterworks of sorts indeed, but not of an ancient minstrel; as it turned out, they were a sophisticated fake, concocted by two contemporary writers and linguists, Vaclav Hanka and Josef Linda. I remember clearly the day back in the 80s when my high-school teacher of Czech language and literature explained this - understandably extremely sensitive - topic to his students. Puzzling? Humiliating? Not at all! Thanks to the excellent counterfeit, explicated the teacher while gesticulating expressively, Czech arts, sciences and politics underwent rapid development, and Czechs became more self-conscious and emancipated in relation to their German adversaries. It was a fraud, but a fraud for a good cause and, therefore, a fully excusable one. With the declaration of Czechoslovakia in 1918, what was previously the nation's mythology became state ideology. The leader of the secessionist movement and the first President of the country, Tomas G Masaryk, was perceived by many as the ultimate idol, a god-like figure. Also the Czechoslovak legions fighting the Bolsheviks in Siberia soon became idolized and deified. Czechs, who had not won a single war for the previous five hundred years, started viewing themselves as a nation of invincible, Herculean warriors.

About 10 years ago, Etnofon Records joined those who aimed with their efforts at lifting Hungarian folk music and the music of nations living with Hungarians to the range of "feast" again. Etnofon has prepared this year's festival program according to this aim. Recommandation Arnold Ipolyi: Hungarian Mythology - Pest, 1854) Since centuries, the symbolics of the Seven Towers have appeared many times in the Hungarian cultural history. Our publishing company, which set its goal eleven years ago to be the broadcaster of music with folklore origin, thinks that this legend is a timely symbol again.
Supplementing the listing of the Seven Tower's treasures with the rural culture of the Carpatian Basin, of which the newly discovered and constantly shaping village music is also part of. It turned out that urban people also favour this music. Primarily on its ceremonies, of course, as in the old times.
We hope to our audience to have experienced this year's Seven Tower festival also as a celebration.
