HUNGARY: Language and culture
Steve Torok, born in Hungary, adds a new twist to hyphenated Americans. He says :"I prefer to be called an American-Hungarian!". To my frivolous suggestion that the language problem would be solved by speaking English loudly, he replies "The trick is to speak English loudly but to listen in all the other languages..." Sorry, Steve. It is too late for me to learn Hungarian. My reference work for languages is the massive, two-volume Compendium of the World's Languages by George L. Campbell, former BBC language supervisor. (Good for the BBC!. Did the Campbells and the MacDonalds speak the same dialect of Gaelic? Did they fight because they couldn't understand each other, or because they could? A question for George Sassoon). Anyhow, in the descriptions of over 1,000 languages, Hungarian comes between Hopi and Hurrian. We are told that Hungarian is spoken by between 12 and 14 million. The oldest document in a funeral oration. The historical account ends: "The social and economic transformation of Hungary from 1860 onwards brought the conditions for a tremendous upsurge in cultural creativity, and Hungarian may now lay claim to one of the world's great literatures". Too bad that this Finno-Ugric language is generally unknown. One more, and to my mind unnecessary translation of Marcel Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu has appeared; the "lost time" is spent reading this boring book. Had Proust written in Hungarian, he would be unknown. Or even in Spanish, or Portuguese. An essay on Hungarian literature opens: "Hungarian literature has ben relatively little known outside Hungary because of the difficulties of translating Magyar."

Thomas Cooper
Visiting Lecturer in Hungarian Culture and Languages Ph.D., Indiana University 2003
Research Interests
My research interests focus on Hungarian literature from the close of the 18th century to the first decades of the 20th. Drawing comparisons from French, German, and English literature, I have attempted to contribute to an understanding of the shared ideological preoccupations and strategies of the European literatures of this period. By offering readings of trends in Hungarian literature that challenge traditional interpretations of Hungarian literary historiography, my work examines the uses and limitations of comparative concepts such as Romanticism, Realism, Populism, Modernism, etc. It has always been my goal to explore the ways in which the study of a less widely known literary tradition can help clarify central assumptions of international literary scholarship. Since beginning as Visiting Lecturer in Hungarian Language and Culture at UNC I have undertaken a project on the Hungarian and Romanian language reform movements of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. While there is considerable material available in various languages on these movements, there is no comparative study whatsoever, in spite of the fact that they were virtually contemporaneous and several of the influential figures of the two movements knew each other personally. My study aims both to situate these movements in a larger European context and to examine the interplay between the two movements themselves. It is my intention to begin learning Serbian and to add to this study a discussion of the Serbian language reform.

INVITATION FOR GRANT APPLICATIONS
Hungarian language course - Hungarian studies
(for persons whose native language is not Hungarian)

The Ministry of Education of the Republic of Hungary and the Balassi Bálint Institute invite applications for a grant, for a 10-month comprehensive Hungarian language-Hungarian studies course. Applicants should be:
  • non-Hungarian citizens whose native language is other than Hungarian,
  • below 29 years of age,
  • university students or holders of a higher education degree.
Confirmation of current or former studies by the applicant in the field of Hungarian studies or related subjects, and future plans for the spreading of the Hungarian language and culture are also a prerequisite. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM One of the main objectives of the program is to help students measurably improve their Hungarian language skills, that is why -depending on the initial language level - students will attend 12-28 language classes per week in groups of 8-10. At the end of the language course students will sit for a state-approved, international ECL exam (intermediate or advanced level). Successful candidates will receive a bilingual (English-Hungarian) certificate. The initial language level will determine the intensity and structure of Hungarian studies. Our general aim with teaching Hungarian subjects is to provide points of orientation, knowledge and structural insight, with the help of which students will be able to follow and understand cultural, political and social occurrences and events of Hungary and make practical use of their knowledge.

HUNGARIAN AND CENTRAL EUROPEAN STUDIES

This program was developed at the request of exchange students who come to Hungary and are interested in the language, culture, history, the economic, technological, social and political changes of East-Central Europe and Hungary or in the social effects of the recent scientific-technological change. Experience shows that most universities acknowledge with credits the studies accomplished in Budapest. In fact, there are three options for studies within this program. For those who want to preserve the full liberty of choosing among the topics it is possible to do so. Another possibility is to study by taking it as an organized certificate course. In this case the freedom of choice is weakened and in order to get a well ordered understanding of the essential features of the region and its transition the student has to vary the free choice of electives with some compulsory courses. The course ends then with a certificate proving the knowledge acquired. To get a certificate 15 credits are necessary. Finally, students can also attend the courses on a non-credit basis. Due to the special possibilities of BUTE, the whole program, or parts of it, can be combined with technical studies. For available technical subjects see other chapters of this bulletin.

The two most important early traces of the written Hungarian language are the first coherent textual relic created between 1192 and 1195, entitled (Death Speech and Prayer) and the first Hungarian poem, the (Old-Hungarian Mary-lamentation) that dates back to 1300. Both were written following Latin church patterns similarly to countless representatives of the Codex literature. Janus Pannonius , the Hungarian creator of humanist values and court poet of King Matthias also used Latin, as the language of his works. In the 16th century, the characteristic genres of the era came into usage in Hungary, as well:

Continuing in his role as the Guardian's reviewer of All Things Hungarian, Tibor Fischer looks at George Szirtes' (pronounced SEER-TAYSH) collection Leopard V: An Island of Sound Nevertheless, Szirtes and Vajda have done a splendid job in collecting the greatest hits of Hungarian literature in translation: Ted Hughes's rendition of Ferenc Juh¡sz and J¡nos Pilinszky, Edwin Morgan's S¡ndor We¶res and Szirtes' own version of Gyula Illy©s's "One Sentence on Tyranny". (Szirtes, a considerable poet in his own right, is to the best of my knowledge the number-one translator from Hungarian.) Much of the work has been available in previous anthologies (such as Szirtes's excellent Bloodaxe poetry anthology The Colonnade of Teeth ) or in the pages of the New Hungarian Quarterly, but this is the first primer of contemporary Hungarian literature that is likely to reach your bookshop.
