H u m a ... Home Themes Inspiration Languages I hlet Anna Szalai and Pal Szabo "Ihlet" means an intensified state of mind stimulating to create an artistic product. Synonyms:
  • sugallat (noun) awakening an idea or an intent in someone that provokes action. When combined with the word "divine", it suggests the intuitive state of mind in which an artist conceives an idea for his-her creation. inspir áció creative stimulus. In scientific interpretation: breathing in.
The question of inspiration is a universal question regarding all aspects of artistic creation regardless of the medium used in the process. Whether the tool is painting, music or the written word, the question is the same: What is it that helps artists achieve their creative goals? The universal nature of this question might explain why the word in many languages, Hungarian included, come from the same Latin word, inspiration. The Historical-Etymological Dictionary of the Hungarian language says that the basis of the Hungarian verb, "ihel or ihl" is of debated origin. It is definitely an onomatopoeic word; originally, its spoken form evokes the act of breathing, respiration or expiration. To reveal the universal nature of the word of inspiration, I chose to show what the word means in the paintings of the most or one of the most significant Hungarian painters of the 20

Introduction
This article is intended to be useable by a broad audience, particularly since most of the available literature of Hungarian names is in Hungarian. There is also a certain amount of background information, particularly cultural history, orthography, and pronounciation. Emphasis here is on the description of Hungarian names and their construction through the 16th century. Though the material presented is in its second edition, nothing here is the final word on any matter. You are strongly encouraged to locate some of the sources listed at the end of this article if you are truly interested in Hungarian names.

Origins of the Hungarians
In the year 997, King Stephen was crowned. Under his leadership, Hungary became a feudal kingdom modelled on the nations of western and central Europe. Stephen forcibly converted his family and the tribal leaders to Christianity, and the religion soon spread throughout the populace. For this, Stephen was recognized as king by the Byzantine crown and by the Pope. Stephen took advantage of this sudden interest in his affairs by playing the two religious leaders against each other to gain concessions for his kingdom. Stephen was later canonized, and his name has been popular in Hungary ever since. Stephen is also important for introducing literacy and record-keeping to Hungary. Many Latin documents survive from his time, and by 1055 we find records in Hungarian.

G eneral information
F irst, take a look at the letters of the alphabet (GB)! A s you could see, the letters tend to have a rather bumpy shape. This is because the writers wrote on hard materials, usually pieces of wood and sometimes stone. Hence the name, "runic writing". Typically, writers held a small piece of wood in their left-hand, and carved the letters by their right one. Consequently, the direction of the writing was from right to left. When they reached the end of the stick, they turned it around, so the next line comes "upside-down" compared to the first one. S ince such a way of writing is a rather laborious task the Hungarian runic writing allows several shorthand-style features. One is that you are allowed to concatenate ("melt together") two or more neighbouring letters. These combined characters are called
