Hungarian is a Uralic language with about 15 million speakers in Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine and Slovakia. There are also many people of Hungarian origin in the UK and other European countries, the USA, Canada and Australia. Hungarian is a highly inflected language in which nouns can have up to 238 possible forms. It is related to Mansi, an Ob-Ugric language with about 4,000 speakers who live in the eastern Urals, and Khanty or Ostyak, the other Ob-Ugric language which is spoken by about 15,000 people in the Ob valley of western Siberia. The earliest Hungarian literature, dating from the 12th century, was in Latin. Texts in Hungarian started to appear during the 13th century. The first book to be printed in Hungarian was published in 1527 in Krakow, Poland. Hungarian literature flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries. Hungarian alphabet Sample text in Hungarian

Hungarian is spoken by ten and a half million inhabitants of present-day Hungary, about three million people in the neighbouring countries, and perhaps as many as an additional two million around the world. These figures make Hungarian, which is related to Finnish, Estonian, and Lappish, but virtually no other language in Europe, by far the largest minority language in a vast sea of Indo-European speakers. Hungarian studies at the University of Toronto are concerned with the language, literature, and culture of Hungary and with the international role of the country, including the particular problem of Hungarian immigration to Canada. GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Hungarian, or Magyar, as it is called in Hungarian, is spoken by 10.5 million people in Hungary, or 98 percent of the population. Substantial populations of speakers are also in adjacent countries: Romania (2 million); the Czech and Slovak Republics (600,000); the former Yugoslavia (450,000); Ukraine (170,000); and Israel (150,000). A significant number of speakers lives in the US (450,000) and smaller populationsunder 20 thousand speakersin Slovenia, Canada, and Austria.
LINGUISTIC AFFILIATION
Hungarian is a member of the Ugric subfamily of the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic (or Uralic-Yukaghir) family of languages. Its nearest group submembers, Khanty and Mansi (Vogul), are little known languages spoken just east of the Ural mountains in Russia in northwestern Siberia. Well known relatives of the Finnic branch are Finnish, Estonian, and Saami (Lapp). Hungarian is the most widely spoken language of its family.
LANGUAGE VARIATION
Because of the development of a vigorous standardized language, dialectal variation in Hungary has been minimized. Variation, however, does exist and mainly involves a contrast between rural and urban standard varieties, with the latter more or less equivalent to the speech of Budapest.

THE PHRASEBASE APPROACH
Many studies show that in most countries, native-speakers only tend to use about unique words and phrases on a daily basis. The question then becomes... which words and phrases? Phrasebase answers this question.
In 1997, I was sent to Japan on an overseas assignment while working for a major software corporation. With a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, I was never required to take a single class in a language other than English. And having been raised in Middle America, I never had any exposure to foreign languages.
Yet, I found myself suddenly living and working in Tokyo, Japan, and confronted head on with a language barrier that hindered my most simple, routine and everyday activities.
Jeff Hock in Tokyo, Japan 1997 Seizing the challenge as an opportunity, I started carrying a notebook and pen everywhere I went. Each day when faced with the slightest problem trying to convey an idea or communicate a thought, I simply wrote it down.
Then right there on the spot, I entered the phrase and had a friend help me enter the corresponding Japanese equivalence. Without knowing it at the time, I was actually learning to write in

Hungarian language
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Hungarian is a Finno-Ugric language The Finno-Ugric languages are a subfamily of the Uralic languages. It consists of several languages, notably Finnish, Hungarian and Estonian. Unlike most of the languages spoken in Europe, the Finno-Ugric languages are not part of the Indo-European family of languages. The "Urheimat" of the proto-language of the modern Finno-Ugric languages, the so-called Proto-Finno-Ugric, is believed to be on the western side of the Ural mountains 5000 years ago. There is evidence that before the arrival of Slavonic tribes to their present territory in Russia, a sprinkling of Finno-Ugrians inhabited the whole territory from the Urals to the Baltic Sea.

Hungarian
Hungarian is a notoriously difficult language to learn as it's not similar to any other European tongue. Listening to locals speak or looking at written notices can leave a tourist feeling helpless and baffled. Fortunately, you'll find that many young people have enthusiastically taken to learning English (as they rightly see it as the language of business or their key to a well paid job with a foreign employer). German is spoken by a significant number of older Hungarians. So chances are, you'll be able to get by without too many problems. However, a few well-chosen words of Hungarian will endear you to local people. Indeed, you may even make a friend for life! While pronunciation is difficult, Hungarians won't worry as they'll be pleased that you made an attempt to speak their language. Listed below are a number of key phrases and words to help you to get around. So if you're feeling brave give these a go before you resort to taking the 'easy' way out (see below). By far the best pocket resource for students of Hungarian, September 12, 2002
Top 1000 Reviewer Reviewer: Christopher Culver from Madrid, Spain
It can be frustrating for the student of Hungarian to find a decent pocket dictionary. Phrasebooks, such as those by Berlitz and Rough Guide, are geared obviously towards travellers and do not have vocabulary suitable for someone tackling a newspaper or short story. Luckily, this Hippocrene Concise Dictionary is an essential resource and I'd recommend that anyone entering the adventure of studying Hungarian obtain it. Like most Hipprocrene dictionaries, this is nothing special in the looks department, the layout is plain and regrettably the binding isn't double-stiched. However, the actual content of the dictionary is excellent. It manages to include the most common words in written and spoken Hungarian but remains pocket-sized. There are even a few appendicies, such as a list of original Magyar names, and a list of holidays in Hungary. This dictionary will prove all the more useful to students of Hungarian travelling in Hungary with its index of geographical names and short menu reader. I am a bit unsatisfied with the price. The book is a short paperback, such as would usually go for less than it does, but Hipprocrene tends to price its books too high.
