Visit HNC forum Work on the Hungarian National Corpus (HNC) started in 1998 at the Department of Corpus Linguistics of the Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) under the supervision of Tamás Váradi . The objective was to create a 100-million-word balance reference corpus of present-day Hungarian. What is a corpus? A corpus is a collection of written or spoken linguistical data. The texts are selected and classified according to certain criteria. A corpus does not necessarily contain whole texts and is not only a repository of texts: it contains their bibliographical data and marks the structural units (paragraphs, sentences). Next to each word, the code of its category is indicated. HNC wishes to be a representative general-aim corpus of present-day standard Hungarian. Morphosyntactic annotation is provided by using automatic methods with a general precision of about 97.5%, i.e. 2.5% of all wordforms has an erroneous analysis. About the Hungarian Language This page is still under construction! Visit us soon! The origin of the Hungarian language is one of the several mysteries that surround the early history of the Magyars. For long it has been believed that Hungarian belongs to the Ugric branch of the Uralic language family based on a relatively large number of words (~300-400) of Finno-Ugric origin in the language. Hungarian, like other Finno-Ugric languages is agglutinative, which means word meanings are modified by adding different and multiple endings or suffixes to the words, rather than using prefixes like, for example, in English. On the other hand, several linguists believe that Hungarian is related to Turkic, rather than to Finno-Ugric languages. Turkic languages are also agglutinative, but they are classified into the Altaic language family. They form a sister group with the Finno-Ugric language family, and supposedly both groups originated from the same Ural-Altaic proto-language, although this idea has also been challanged. Others try to relate Hungarian to Sumerian, a language that was spoken in the Middle-East some nine thousand years ago. These ideas have been rejected by scientists for several reasons. The most important of these is the claim that most similarities are only superficial and that these words are not genetically related (i.e. not coming from the same ancestral words). The claimed similarities are mostly based on transcriptions of words, and not on actual phonetics of how those words were pronounced. Nevertheless, it is an undeniable fact that an ancient segment of Hungarian that has been preserved mainly in child songs, lullabies and verses, shows some degree of similarity to Sumerian. Many linguists, however, regard these old remains of an "ancient language" as of unknown origin.

Memorandum on Romania's Admission to the Council of Europe Editorial Board: MEMORANDUM BY THE DEMOCRATIC ALLIANCE OF HUNGARIANS IN ROMANIA ON ROMANIA'S ADMISSION TO THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE The most severe of the Communist dictatorships collapsed in Romania in December, 1989. Although some elements of political pluralism, a market economy and constitutional order have been established, other developments point toward a restoration of the old order, rather than the creation of an actual constitutional state. Amidst the deepening political, social and economic crisis, the authorities are concentrating on gaining admission to the Council of Europe in order to reinforce their domestic and foreign credibility. DAHR considers adaptation of Romania's legal system and social structures to European standards, and the country's integration into Europe as most important. In our opinion, however, Romania will have not satisfied in substance the conditions for membership in the Council of Europe until the necessary changes in her legal system have been accomplished and until the functioning of her principle institutions is satisfactory. The purpose of our memorandum is to summarize the views and proposals of DAHR, which represents the interests of approximately two million members of Romania's Hungarian community, with respect to legal system, including minority protection.

Many non Hungarians linguists have been enchanted by this phenomenally unique language, writing glorious descriptions of it, like Sir Bowring or Mezofanti. However it was the great poets and writers of the last century that helped to save it, because their art has elevated the language to new pinnacles and scrubbed off the centuries of abuse, as the language of only the common people. It is a miracle of God that it has survived in face of so much adversity in this turbulent part of the world. What most readers never realized were the draconian methods used to enforce this theory in the last 50 years under communist-Russian domination and how this theory dominated all aspects of the study of Hungarian prehistory. All the results of the other sciences, which could shed a light on our past, were judged on their ability to support this theory, which in effect crippled them. If it did not agree it was obviously because it was invalid. So over time through such selection much of Hungarian prehistory has become more and more clouded and it seems that the only thing that was absolutely believed any longer was the Finno-Ugrian descent. Yet this theory did not agree and could not explain traditions, early history, archeology, anthropology, traditional music, art, burial customs or anything else to do with early Hungarians. Things which amongst Hungarians had very early historic roots in the east.
