If you search for a grammar book on Hungarian language, one of your first hits may be "Teach Yourself Hungarian". However, I personally do not recommend this book. Why? Just two reviews (borrowed from amazon.com Teach Yourself Hungarian could do a little better. It's great if you're going to visit Hungary and not gain full proficiency, but it seems to fail being an effective grammatical text. First mistake it starts off with dialogs, afterwards giving you a lengthy vocabulary list. The book may be for you if you can learn off of phrases alone, rather than taking apart each phrase and looking at a language word-by-word. If you are truly looking to 'teach yourself', may it be suggested to try something else. lennen@erols.com

    DEPARTMENT OF HUNGARIAN LANGUAGE
The department trains teachers of Hungarian language and literature for primary schools. The average number of students is one hundred/year at the day and twenty-thirty at corresponding courses. The department takes part in education of teacher trainees and of special further trainings where subjects of applied linguistics (teaching the mother tonguse, language usage, ortography etc.) are parts of the courses. The department is the centre of Hungarian linguistic textology researches. In international cooperation the periodic publication ‘Semiotic Textololgy’ has been edited and published here from 1990. Up to date 12 volumes have been printed. Sociolinguistic, usage and mother tongue pedagogy researches are also going on within the frames of international coordination as well. Together with Hungarian research centres studies in language history, dialectology, descriptive grammar an stylistics are also carried aon; the results are published in special volumes and periodicals, respectively. The curriculum includes first of all Hungarian grammar, usage, stylistics, rhetorics and ortography, but also treats main problems of general linguistics, socio- and psycholinguistics.

    Lesson One: Some Basics
    Page last updated May 6.
    Vocabulary
magyar (remember gy is pronounced like dy ) - Hungarian
      igen - yes
      nem - no, not
      angol - English
amerikai (remember to pronounce the last two vowels separately) - American
      nyelv - language
      szép - beautiful
      itt - here
no" - woman férfi - man nagyon - very város - city és - and vagyok - I am könnyu" - easy
    Some sample sentences:
A no" magyar és a férfi angol. The woman is Hungarian and the man is English. A város nagyon szép. The city is very beautiful. Amerikai vagyok. I am American. A magyar nyelv könnyu". The Hungarian language is easy.
    Grammar
      The Definite Article
You probably deduced from the above sentences that the definite article in Hungarian is A . Remember to pronounce it like aw and not like the English indefinite article 'a'. A corresponds to the English 'the' and before a word beginning with a vowel, A becomes Az A város - the city Az autó - the car
      Equational Sentences
You also probably noticed that in the above sentences there was a construction like 'A város szép' and 'A no" magyar' in which there was no verb corresponding to the English 'is'. Hungarian does have a verb 'is' and it is often used, but for sentences like these, called equational sentences, it can be omitted. This rule however, only applies to 3rd person subjects.
Personal Pronouns and the Irregular Verb 'Lenni'
The personal pronouns in Hungarian are as follows, along with their corresponding forms of the verb 'lenni'

Hungarian is generally believed to a member of the Ugric languages , a sub-group of the Finno-Ugric languages , which are a branch of the Uralic languages However, there are various other alternative theories about the origins of Hungarian, but they are usually discarded by most linguists, due to lack of evidence:
    • Hungarian language has been claimed to be closely related to Hunnish , as Hungarian legends and histories show the close ties between the two peoples, and both the Huns and the modern day Hunnish people ( Székely ) lived in Hungary. However, the link to Hunnish is uncertain.

    The Hungarian Language
Fred Hamori The uniqueness of the Hungarian language is one thing that cannot be denied and must be explained properly as an integral part of the history of the people who use it. Many non Hungarians linguists have been enchanted by this phenomenally unique language, writing glorious descriptions of it, like Sir Bowring or Mezofanti. However it was the great poets and writers of the last century that helped to save it, because their art has elevated the language to new pinnacles and scrubbed off the centuries of abuse, as the language of only the common people. It is a miracle of God that it has survived in face of so much adversity in this turbulent part of the world. What most readers never realized were the draconian methods used to enforce this theory in the last 50 years under communist-Russian domination and how this theory dominated all aspects of the study of Hungarian prehistory. All the results of the other sciences, which could shed a light on our past, were judged on their ability to support this theory, which in effect crippled them. If it did not agree it was obviously because it was invalid. So over time through such selection much of Hungarian prehistory has become more and more clouded and it seems that the only thing that was absolutely believed any longer was the Finno-Ugrian descent. Yet this theory did not agree and could not explain traditions, early history, archeology, anthropology, traditional music, art, burial customs or anything else to do with early Hungarians. Things which amongst Hungarians had very early historic roots in the east.
