The Situation of Hungarians in Romania 1. HISTORY Hungarians in Transylvania Late 9 th th century Hungarians settle in Transylvania, the western part of present Romania, and adopt Christianity. th century The establishment of the administrative divisions in Transylvania. Founding of the Roman Catholic Bishopric in Gyulafehérvár (Alba Iulia). A Szekler-Hungarian (Székely-Magyar) ethnic group presumably settled down at that time in Transylvania. th century Saxon settlers arrive in Transylvania. The subsequent Hungarian kings grant the Hungarian, Szekler, and Saxon communities privileges to confirm their customary rights evolved earlier. th century The construction of the first Gothic-style buildings begin and of the first authenticated places (Loca Credible) in Gyulafehérvár, Kolozsvár, and Várad. The 1241 Tatar invasion devastates and partly depopulates Hungary and Transylvania. This is followed by the influx of newer ethnic groups, including the Romanians. The noblemen’s “General Assembly” (congregatio generalis) is first mentioned in a 1288 charter. Also, the first references to Romanian-inhabited territories (“terra Blachorum”) appear in Fogaras (Fãgãraº) in 1222, and in Omlás (Amnaº) and Hátszeg (Haþeg) in 1247. th century The Szeklers’ “General Assembly” (congregatio generalis) is first mentioned in 1344. The feudal system is ultimately consolidated in Transylvania, too.

MONDAY 28 JUNE, 6.45pm: MONDAY MUSIC SOIREE at the HUNGARIAN CULTURAL CENTRE (free event, but reservation essential) Meet Gordon on Monday 28 June (yes, June!), between 6.45pm and 7pm, at Covent Garden tube station (Piccadilly Line, Zone 1) just outside the exit barriers to go to the Hungarian Cultural Centre (HCC), 10 Maiden Lane, WC2, to hear music by Tartini, Beethoven, Bartok and Debussy performed by Balint Szekely (violin) and Mariko Kondo (piano). The violinist was born in Transylvania and the pianist in Japan. I notice from the programme notes that Mariko studied with my former piano teacher, Frank Wibaut (he was my piano teacher when I was at school, but we have now lost touch, so I am looking forward to chatting to Mariko!). You can see more details of the programme and the performers by clicking on

http://www.indianembassy.hu/culture.html
INDO-HUNGARIAN CULTURAL RELATIONS In the field of culture, the relationship between India and Hungary has always been co-operative and vibrant. The relationship can be said to have been pioneered by the great Hungarian Indologist Alexander Korosi de Csoma (first half of 19th century) who died in India and enriched by fond memories of the visit of Rabindranath Tagore to Hungary in 1926. The Hungarian language is taught in Delhi University while Sanskrit (for more than a century) and Hindi are taught in Hungarian universities. New Delhi enjoys the distinction of hosting the only Hungarian Cultural Centre in Asia which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 1998. Catering to the deep-rooted interest in Indian culture in Hungary, several cultural activities have been undertaken by the Mission from time to time, with the support of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Hungarian Ministry of Culture. The Indo-Hungarian Friendship Association set up in 1988 is very active. Many cultural activities relating to India are organised by Hungarian municipalities and cultural organisations, with the full support of the Indian Embassy. Highly professional Hungarian artists trained in Indian classical music and dance perform regularly on such occasions. Courses in Indian Culture and Hindi language are also conducted by the Embassy. Regular exchanges of scholars and academics has been taking place under the Indo-Hungarian Cultural Exchange Programme (CEP). The present CEP was renewed for 1999-2001.

Culture
Hungarian art and architecture is laced with Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau influences. The country has one of the finest folk traditions in Europe, producing excellent examples of embroidery, pottery, ceiling and wall painting, and objects carved from wood or bone. Its musical contributions are just as rich, and range from the rhapsodies of Franz Liszt and the operas of Ferenc Erkel to Gypsy and folk music. Literature has been shaped by the monumental events of the nation's history, which have given rise to swashbuckling odes, stirring poems of independence, gritty tales of realism, and strident polemic. Soccer is far and away the favourite spectator sport, while chess is also popular. Hungarians tend to have a sceptical view of faith (some suggest this is why they have a high success rate in science and mathematics), but of those declaring religious affiliation, most would say they're either Roman Catholic, Calvinist or Lutheran. The country also has a small Greek Catholic and Orthodox population, and a thriving Jewish community in Budapest. You'll have to dig a little to unearth the wonders of Hungarian cuisine. The natural abundance of fruits and vegetables should make eating here a delight, but unfortunately this is often not the case. Generally, basic dishes consist of fatty meat (pork is generally preferred) or overcooked fish, some sort of starch, and a teensy-weensy garnish of pickles. These include:

He's the Real Tourist Guy
By Jeffrey Benner Also by this reporter Page 1 of 1
02:00 AM Nov. 20, 2001 PT The identity of the world-famous "Tourist Guy" has been revealed, but his fear of becoming an Internet freak show means he'll be shunning the limelight. The Tourist Guy, or "Tourist of Death," is a 25-year-old Hungarian man called Peter. He asked that his last name be kept confidential, because he doesn't want to become the next Mahir Cagri, the lovesick Turk.

Budapest and its Surroundings
Some fall in love with Budapest at first sight, others will only become devotees after a longer stay, but no-one denies that it is one of the most beautifully situated cities in the world. The wide stream of the Danube divides the metropolis of some two million inhabitants into two, the hilly Buda and the flat Pest. The panorama over the Danube and the radial avenue of Andrássy út are on the UNESCO world heritage list. Once you have seen them flood-lit, you will appreciate why.
Northern Hungary
The highest hills of Hungary cross the northern part of the country diagonally. The ranges of Cserhát, Mátra, Bükk and the Zemplén hills, rising 600 to 900 meters, conceal unparalleled treasures of cultural history. The stalactites and stalagmites of the Baradla Cave and the village green of Hollókõ are on UNESCO's world heritage list. The prehistoric relics at Ipolytarnóc and the biosphere reserve of the Bükk Plateau are equally protected. The local folk art is also distinctive: the Palóts embroideries and the Matyó national wear are unique in the country. The medical bathing establishments of Bogács and Bükkszék are sought out by people suffering from locomotor disorders.
