PRINCIPLES OF PRESENTING HUNGARIAN CULTURE AT THE FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR he cultural heritage of Hungary is part of Western culture and has common history with it. Therefore, at the Frankfurt Book Fair we would like to present the place of Hungary within the cultural context of Europe and we wish to highlight the fertile artistic exchange between Hungary and the rest of Europe. On the other hand, by presenting a wide range of artistic works, we would like to bring into spotlight some faces of Hungarian culture still unknown abroad. Thus, the organisers achieving the motto of the central theme – Hungary without boundaries – in two distinct manners. Hungary is open outwards, to the neighbouring peoples and cultures and at the same time it is open towards accepting all artistic trends and currents. Hungarian literature will therefore be represented at the Book Fair not only by well-known names, but also through younger authors, who are less recognised abroad. Beside a rich offer of new fiction, a variety of other literary genres will also represent Hungary. Hungarian fine arts will also be comprehensively represented. Amongst others, selected works of a great number of contemporary artists, a

2004 Theme: " BRIDGING OUR CULTURES THROUGH THE ARTS"
Our exhibit highlights one aspect of Hungarian Art, the Folk Art of embroidery – the form of art that produces beautiful objects to use in everyday life. The various geographical regions of the country produce unique embroidery, with each its typical colors, elements, and products. For example:
  • KALOCSA: Colorful elements, flowers, bouquets, even paprika, used on blouses, clothes and table cloths ZALA REGION: Linen items, wall decorations, pillow cases KALOTASZEG: (Hungarian Transylvania) Flowers, leaves, fruit patterns, used on dresses
The exhibit shows the map of origin of these and other major folk embroidery types The bridge brings the influence of these folk arts elements over the ocean to our American fashions designers and clothing items, which are popular currently in our US stores.

Spring 2002 Carolina Connections home Carolina First home Birinyi establishes first professorship in Hungarian culture L aszlo Birinyi Jr. '67 arrived in the United States when he was 7 years old, faced with the daunting task of learning his third new language and becoming a part of yet another foreign culture. His father, Laszlo Birinyi Sr., had led the boy and his family out of Hungary during World War II. After spending a tumultuous few years navigating the geographic and political uncertainty of Europe, they finally found security in America. "Like so many Eastern Europeans, we sought to escape the conflicts," Birinyi Jr. said. "We were focused on survival." As refugees, the Birinyi family traveled through Europe, trying to find a safe place to settle. Even after the war ended, they chose not to return to Hungary, unwilling to become a part of the Communist regime that had taken control of the nation. But prior to the beginning of the Cold War, European host nations wanted refugees to return to their homes. The Birinyis received an offer of sponsorship from the Church World Service giving them the alternative to immigrate to America. The younger Birinyi grew up in Pennsylvania, arriving in Chapel Hill in 1962 as a freshman.

Hungarian Film Week in Los Angeles
Twelve Hungarian films - mainly the award winners of the 33 rd Hungarian Film Week - constitute the program of the Hungarian Film Week in Los Angeles taking place 20 thru 24 November 2002. Leading producers of American film studios, representatives of distributing companies, film colleges, journalists were invited to the event organized by the Új Budapest Filmstúdió and the Hungarian Film Union. The Film Week is a good opportunity to introduce the Oscar candidate Hukkle to the American film profession and it is also useful for the Hungarian organizers in determining which film to nominate for the Golden Globe. Hungarian Consul-General Szabolcs Kerék-Bárczy will open the Film Week. Pálfi György's Hukkle will be presented on the opening ceremony. The elegant Laemmle Theatre - Music Hall with its audience capacity of 250 will host the event. Actress Katalin Gáti will be the master of ceremony. She will introduce the filmmakers after the showings and will interview the directors.
I Love Budapest in North America
Incze Ágnes's I Love Budapest has been introduced in the United States. The American premier took place in one of the most popular movie theatres in Los Angeles dealing with independent and European films, the Laemmle's Sunset 5 Cinema. After 26 November the Californian distributors, Vanguard Cinema and Filmkitchen.com, will launch the film in DVD and VHS format as well.

It also includes some names from the Okros album, including Csaba Okros, Balough (who's cimbalom playing on "Tune From Maramaros" is one of the highlights of the album) and Sebestyen adds a few vocals. It is the music itself that makes this album such a treat, the mix of Hungarian delivery and Jewish verve and pathos makes it stand out from anything else you have heard. KAMPEC DOLORES This band has taken the folk rock of England and the jazz of New York's downtown scene and married it with a touch of Hungarian roots to make Levitation (ReR Megacorp, 19-23 Saviors Rd., London SW2 5HP, England). Hungary's ties to the gypsies and other eastern sources bleed into everything this group does, making what is otherwise a hard rock album seem ethereal and aloof. Modal sax lines and thundering tom-tom drums clash with electric guitars and Glass-like repetitive synth lines. Over all this heavy handed instrumentation is a wispy female vocalist, Gabi Kenderesi, who also adds some violin in the mix. Musikas meets Fairport Convention, and talks about Kate Bush's punk years.

First of all, I'm not a linguist, not even an arts scientist. I'm trying not to use the technical terms of grammar (since I don't know them in English :-)
If you search for a grammar book on Hungarian language, one of your first hits may be "Teach Yourself Hungarian". However, I personally do not recommend this book. Why? Just two reviews (borrowed from amazon.com Teach Yourself Hungarian could do a little better. It's great if you're going to visit Hungary and not gain full proficiency, but it seems to fail being an effective grammatical text. First mistake it starts off with dialogs, afterwards giving you a lengthy vocabulary list. The book may be for you if you can learn off of phrases alone, rather than taking apart each phrase and looking at a language word-by-word. If you are truly looking to 'teach yourself', may it be suggested to try something else. lennen@erols.com
