Thousand Years of Hungarian Culture
For centuries, the Hungarians wandered across the steppes of Eastern Europe before they came to the Carpathian Basin, the site of the former Avar empire, which was to become their final homeland. Following the Hungarian Conquest in 896 under Prince Árpád, the Hungarians rapidly left behind their nomadic lifestyle, dominated by animal herding, to the cultivation of land. When the defeat at Augsburg in 955 at the hands of Otto the Great (later Holy Roman Emperor) forced them to abandon their western forays, the Hungarians—this time on the initiative of Grand Prince Géza began to turn towards the nations and culture of Western Christendom. In 973, Géza, whom Western chroniclers referred to as king (‘rex’), sent a high-ranking delegation to the German Estates at Quedlinburg; invited to his court St Adalbert, the bishop of Prague, who was later killed by pagan Prussians—members of a western Slavic tribe—on the Baltic coast; made a contribution to the founding of the Benedictine monastery in Pannonhalma, named after Saint Martin; and had himself christened, while at the same time maintaining existing pagan rites. THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF HUNGARIAN SCIENCE
The achievements of Hungarian science and technology are appreciated all over the world. Derec de Solla Price, professor at Columbia University, writes in the preface to the Hungarian edition of his book "Small Science - Great Science": "With regard both to absolute degree and per capita indices, it is absolutely clear that Hungary rightfully belongs to that group of countries which, based on its number of inhabitants, economy and industrial development, demonstrates a rather high level of development and a certain commitment, primarily in research of basic sciences. This is not that surprising, since there is an extraordinary mental capacity which made tiny Hungary into a great country of Nobel-Prize-winning scientists, a country of scientists whose abilities are unparalleled." Price did not exaggerate. There have been 11 Nobel Prize winners of Hungarian origin: RÓBERT BÁRÁNY (1876-1936) Awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology (medical sciences) in 1914 for "his work relating to the pathology and physiology of the vestibular apparatus." He lived in Sweden.

Stephen had himself crowned in 1000 with insignia of royalty granted by Pope Sylvester II, and completed the state-building process started by his father. Stephen founded ten episcopates and several monasteries, had churches built, set up the administration of royal counties, crushed those tribal leaders who were seeking to maintain paganism and opposed Europeanisation, but also defended his country from attacks from the west. Stephen led his people to become a nation of Christian Europe and created the Kingdom of Hungary: his successor, King Ladislas (László), made him—together with the early deceased crown prince Imre and Bishop Gellért, who died as a martyr in the pagan uprising of 1046—saints of the Christian Church. Hungarian Cultural and Social Clubs/Groups
Are you connected with the who's who doing the what's what? Interested in connecting with Hungarians and people who love Hungary? Want to get involved online or in person with social, political and cultural groups?
Hungarian Americans meet where everyone else meets. They go to church , attend special events, eat out , and celebrate holidays together. Some are also are involved in organizations focused on Hungarian interests and issues. Here are some of the better-known groups. You can expect that they will know the local events and activities in your community. Read about one little boy's experience as a Hungarian American.
Whether you are looking to talk books , lift a glass to celebrate your nameday , or to get involved in Hungarian political or legal issues, you're sure to find a group for you.
Among the more interesting of the online groups is Hungarians on the Net , a significant collection of international members discussing all varieties of Hungarian matters. You'll find a fuller description of their group in the directory below. It has some fantastic links, and is fairly active.
Maybe starting your own group is the way to go. Enjoy your culture together. Below are several books that aren't so much about how to start a group, but are about how to organize events and meetings, and how to entertain guests. You may prefer something as simple as getting together over coffee to talk Hungarian, or something elaborate, like a monthly meeting in which you discuss the European Union's impact on the Hungarian economy. Be sure to check the links in the blue "See Also" box on the top right for more directories that can help you find out where Hungarians are.

Why there is a need for teachers in Hungary

About the course

In Hungary, only approximately 20% of the population speaks any foreign language, and a lot of those people speak Russian and German, but not English. Younger people are now taught English in elementary and high school, but the quality of teaching is very varied and there is a huge lag especially in the teaching of communicative skills and pronounciation pratice. Those who speak English well enough to pass the exams in school are often very much in trouble if they encounter a tourist who needs directions in the street. This is not some kind of an anecdote, this is the truth that i experience myself numerous times among my peers, and i have had more than my fair share of bad English teachers (not native speakers) during my 15 years of education.

HUNGARIANS IN AMERICA
H ungarian emigrants happy to have found freedom and a chance for a fresh start, worked hard, studied, and quickly became good citizens. The receiving countries were happy with the newcomers who were eager to give of their talent and experience and help build their young adopted country. More than half a dozen earned Nobel prizes for their new country. Life in America would probably be different without St. Louis Post-Dispatch publisher Joseph Pulitzer , Paramount Studios' founder Adolph Zukor , conductors Antal Dorati George Solti and George Szell , actresses Zsa Zsa Gabor and Mariska Hargitay , actors Tony Curtis Peter Lorre Bela Lugosi and comedian Ernie Kovacs , jazz man Gabor Szabo , football heroes Joe Namath Larry Csonka and Don Shula , and financial giants Andrew Sarlos and George Soros , the philanthropist. Although the composer, Bela Bartok did not become an American citizen, he spent the last year of his life in New York. Three famous physicists attended the same school in Budapest, went to America, helped to win the war and, for better or worse, changed history forever. Leo Szilard Eugene Wigner and Edward Teller are recognized for their work in the field of atomic and nuclear energy.

POLITICS is more powerful than books but "totally got on my nerves", says Dobos.
photo: Tibor Somogyi
AUTHOR, journalist, teacher, MP, minister, director - in one way or another, László Dobos has been present in the cultural and public life of ethnic Hungarians in Slovakia for decades. Ten years ago, neighbouring Hungary acknowledged his contribution to literature by presenting him with the highest Hungarian cultural honour, the Kossuth Award. Now he is among the 18 personalities who received the Pribina Cross, a high Slovak state award, on January 1, the day of Slovakia's independence. In an interview with The Slovak Spectator, László Dobos shared his views on the evolving situation of ethnic Hungarians in Slovakia.
The Slovak Spectator (TSS): Before we talk about the Pribina Cross, which you earlier said was given, through you, to all ethnic Hungarians in Slovakia, let me mention the Hungarian Kossuth Award, the highest possible acknowledgement a writer can receive from the Hungarian government. With this award did Hungary acknowledge all writers living in Slovakia that publish their work in Hungarian?

To mark the entry of Hungary into the European Union this year a number of cultural events are being held in Britain, of which two are exhibitions. The first exhibition, entitled A Celebration of Hungarian Gold and Silver, is on view at the Gilbert Collection in Somerset House in London until February 1. The intention is to show the diversity of Hungarian metalwork through examples from various eras and regions. Because of their location near the crossroads of Europe and the Islamic world, Hungarian craftsmen took inspiration from many different cultures. The earliest work in the show is a Scythian running stag (illustrated below) made of gold and dating from the sixth century B.C. Other gold artifacts, mainly medieval, include a number of ecclesiastical objects such as a thirteenth-century gold cross encrusted with pearls and precious stones.
