"TWO DOWN, ONE TO GO":
The First World War led to the shattering of three imperial systems, and it is not too much to say that the world is still struggling with their demise and that of the international system of which they were so integral a part.
The degree to which Mr. Judge himself casts the Hundred Years War as simple mopping up after the breaking of the three empires suggests precisely how accurate the End of History metaphor is , despite his protestation to the contrary.

Comments I haven't got much interest in the "end of history" debate. And I find it surprising that people who, unlike me, think space travel is a good idea do find it interesting. I'd just point out that in 1914 there were a lot more than 3 empires. All gone now, not just the Russian, Ottoman and German, and just two of them replaced with new empires (India and China). If anybody's going to try for great, sweeping statements, it helps to at least try to account for the great big facts.

French Armies of the Hundred Years War: 1328-1429
Written by David Nicolle Angus McBride
Published by Osprey Pub Co (February 2000)
ISBN 1855327104

Customer Reviews This book is a great overview of the period covered; however I think it was a bit over-industrious to sqeeze so much into one book (the normal Men-At-Arms size, that is). I think keeping it to the early period (up to Poitiers or Najera) and a separate one for the Agincourt/Joan of Arc period would've been better. McBride, master illustrator that he is, kind of disappointed me with his renditions of both du Guesclin and the Maid. Joan was shown in a dress! It still has good illustrations of the armor of the average man at arms and "lowly" infantry types, though. This lavishly illustrated and meticulously researched Osprey Men-At-Arms book is a concise, yet informative study of the composition and tactics of French armies of the Hundred Years War. My only complaint is that the author has not gone to the same extent as Nicholas Michael (Armies of Medieval Burgundy, 1364-1477) in covering the compagnies d'ordonnances. Aside from this fault, this book is a great introduction to a subject that has long been neglected by Osprey publishing. Look for related books on other categories

Sumptions history of this sordid and bloody conflict will be the defining opus of this era. In this first volume of 600 pages he covers intimately all aspects of the wars first 10 years. He is mostly skilled at both the economic and diplomatic machinations of the conflict, emphasising how armies were fielded and then supported. His scope is grand and he covers events as far away as Scotland, Flanders, Britany, and the Popes involvement from the Avignon palaces.

The Hundred Years' War
On the strength of his claim to the French throne as a direct descendant of Philip IV the Fair through his mother, Isabella of France, in 1337 Edward III of England refused to do homage for Guienne to King Philip VI ). Before long, however, major military operations gave way to a war of attrition under Charles V. In Bertrand du Guesclin, a future high constable, Charles found an able leader who rid the kingdom of the marauding Free Companies, bands of mercenaries who were pillaging the realm. By the time Charles V died in 1380 the situation had stabilized, and the conciliatory policies of England's Richard II , at century's end, fostered hopes for a lasting peace. CAUSES
The Battle for Flanders Flanders had grown to be the industrial center of northern Europe and had become extremely wealthy through its cloth manufacture. It could not produce enough wool to satisfy its market and imported fine fleece from England. England depended upon this trade for its foreign exchange. During the 1200's, the upper-class English had adopted Norman fashions and switched from beer to wine. Note that beer and wine were very important elements in the medieval diet. Both contain vitamin and yeast complexes that the medieval diet, especially during the winter, did not provide. Besides, the preservation of food was a difficult matter in that era, and the alcohol in beer and wine represented a large number of calories stored in an inexpensive and effective fashion. People did get drunk during the middle ages, but most could not afford to do so. Beer and wine were valued as food sources and were priced accordingly The problem was that England could not grow grapes to produce the wine that many of the English now favored and had to import it. A triangular trade arose in which English fleece was exchanged for Flemish cloth, which was then taken to southern France and exchanged for wine, which was then shipped into England and Ireland, primarily through the ports of Dublin, Bristol, and London.

Final Phase (1422-1453)
Significance of the final phase of the Hundred Years' War G enerally the last, and decisive, phase of the Hundred Years' War is not well covered in most modern English or American histories of Western warfare. If not ignored completely, the reconquests by the French army of Charles VII are given the skimpiest summary treatment. Even popular French histories often close the coverage of the military events with the arrival of Joan of Arc, and suggest that this introduced a moral prerogative which outweighed military factors.
More accurately, Yolande of Anjou, appears to have played a role as vital as that of Joan of Arc. It was Yolande who was constantly involved in the selection and promotion of the many who truly earned for Charles VII his later acquired sobriquet "the Well Served."
The final phase of the Hundred Years' War encompassed the obviously dramatic, first effective employment of gunpowder weapons (aside from the Hussite Wars of 1413-36) in Western Europe. What was special to the French artillery was not a secret technology. The improved gunpowder and gun manufacturing techniques were widely known throughout Europe. It was the organization and direction of the artillery arm by Jean and Gaspard Bureau, that enable the French army to prevail in rapid siege operations as well as in pitched battles.
The final phase of the Hundred Years' War contained two battles that ran contrary to the some of the touted themes of medieval warfare espoused by many military theorists.

This is currently under construction, so please excuse all the blank spaces. It is my hope to have a very complete, extensive timeline, with copious information on all manner of events, not just the major battles. Wherever possible I have included the actual date and not just the year. I have also included some information on the period leading up to the war, and also some info on the aftermath. I have also tried, where possible, to render titles and names as they would be in their own nation. Thus Phillip of Burgundy is here as Philippe de Bourgogne, and John of Brittany is Jean de Bretagne, and so on.
Year Day/Date Event February An assemblage of nobles gathers in Paris to ratify the coronation of Philippe V, stating that "A woman cannot succeed to the throne and kingdom of France" Edward II makes a truce with the Scots, to last 13 years. Queen Isabella leaves England for France, theoretically to negotiate with he brother King Charles IV of France on behalf of her husband, Edward II of England.

Struggle for standardization
One hundred years of cinema is also due to acceptance of one standard gauge. Whereas film equipment has undergone drastic changes in the course of a century it is a little miracle that 35mm has remained the universally accepted film size. If film had followed the same course as video, with its continuing change of systems, the development might have been delayed considerably. I have produced a few programs that help me organising my households in the HYW games I'm in. Maybe some of the are useful for other players, too. So, here they are. Economy: Glossary Black Death
The combination of bubonic and pneumonic plagues that entered Europe along Eastern trade routes, sweeping across Europe between 1347-1350. Spread by rats carrying infected fleas, the Plague eliminated between one-fourth and one-third of the population in its first wave. Subsequent outbreaks, which continued into the seventeenth century were far less severe. The Black Death had profound effects on all aspects of medieval life and deeply affected the psychological outlook of Europeans. Ciompi Rebellion
The Ciompi Rebellion in Florence in 1378 was an attempt by day-labourers and shop owners, mostly in the textile trades, and others of the popolo minuto to achieve a political voice. The goal of the uprising was to address inequalities rather than a complete upheaval of the constitution and the new regime was successful for three years. Three new guilds were created and the committee of priors was adjusted. Although the popolo grasso eventually regained power in 1381, Florentine politics would continue to be influenced by the idea of popular uprisings. English Peasants' Revolt
The Peasants' Revolt of 1381 in England was a full-scale rebellion that occurred in reaction to the corruption of the regency government that followed the death of Edward III. The government's ineffectiveness in curbing the more extreme excesses of the merchants and nobles against the peasants during the Black Death also contributed to the revolt. The rebels called on the young king, Richard II, to take control of the government and protect the lower classes from the nobility and from the selfish rule of the regency. Some aristocrats were murdered and there was widespread destruction of property, particularly that belonging to the nobility. When a mob marched on London, King Richard courageously went into its midst in order to hear the people's complaints. One of the rebel leaders, Wat Tyler, tried to kill the king, but was himself slain. Shortly thereafter, the rebels dispersed and the nobles joined the other propertied classes in brutal retaliation against the rebels.

The Progressives’ 100 Years War
by William L. Anderson I was born in 1953, and throughout my lifetime, it seems we have been at war in one way or another. A few months before I was born, the Korean War had just ended, World War II was just eight years in the past, and our Vietnam nightmare was just beginning. JFK, nearly everyone in Washington who had something to do with the armed forces or an armed forces contractor was in on the conspiracy to murder John F. Kennedy. He wants us to believe that not only did the evil capitalists band together to kill JFK, but they also managed to keep it a secret even though thousands of people were involved in the plot.) In fact, the very nature of the attacks tells us something about violence, peace, and commerce. Had enemy warplanes of a nation "officially" at war with the United States slammed into the World Trade Towers and the Pentagon, we might have been horrified with the results, but not shocked. After all, those who fought the Japanese in World War II had to deal with kamikaze attacks, and armed forces of all sides in that war dropped bombs on civilians. commercial jets, full of people traveling for business, pleasure, and to meet loved ones. That depraved individuals would commandeer those jets to use them for murder and mayhem was what shocked all of us. Who would murder people who sat peacefully at their desks, doing the daily tasks of business?
