    Historical background
The Hundred Years' War is the generic name given to a succession of Anglo-French conflicts. The troubles started when Edward III of England, grand-son of King of France Philippe IV le Bel, claimed the throne of France. Calais During the second half of XIVth century, King of France Charles V and Constable Du Guesclin expelled the English from most of France. In 1380, only Guyenne and Calais were still under English control. Under the reign of Charles VI, the civil war between the House of and Duke of Burgundy , as well as Charles VI's insanity, helped the English to reconquer the lost territories. After the battle of Agincourt (1415), the treaty of Troyes imposed the deposition of Charles VI and the regency of King of England (1420). In 1429, Joan of Arc seized

The Hundred Years War: Trial by Fire (The Middle Ages Series) > Customer Review #1: Where is the third volume - please!!!

Sumption continues the same excellence in Trial by Fire that was started in Trial by Battle - an integrative and authoritative look at the Hundred Years War. As opposed to other histories if this period, his approach is detailed and authoritative - no greater praise can be made of a piece of historical work covering an "event" of such scope and length. My only disappointment is the delay in release of future volumes. I would not recommend this book to individuals who are looking for general history or discussions of battles. On the other hand, for those with interest in the 13th to 15th century, it is highly recommended.

After our death [Charles VI], and from that time forward, the crown and kingdom of France, with all their rights and appurtenances, shall be vested permanently in our son [son-inlaw], King Henry [of England], and his heirs. 7.....The power and authority to govern and to control the public affairs of the said kingdom shall, during our lifetime, be vested in our son, King Henry, with the advice of the nobles and wise men who are obedient to us, and who have consideration for the advancement and honor of the said kingdom.... 24.....[It is agreed] that the two kingdoms shall be governed from the time that our said son, or any of his heirs shall assume the crown, not divided between different kings at the same time, but under one person who shall be king and sovereign lord of both kingdoms; observing all pledges and all other things to each kingdom its rights, liberties or custons, usages and laws, not submitting in any manner one kingdom to the other. 29. A Hundred Years of Terror
A special report prepared by the Southern Poverty Law Center 400 Washington Avenue Montgomery, AL 36104 The Ku Klux Klan's long history of violence grew out of the resentment and hatred many white Southerners felt in the aftermath of the Civil War. Blacks, having won the struggle for freedom from slavery, were now faced with a new struggle against widespread racism and the terrorism of the Ku Klux Klan. While the menace of the KKK has peaked and waned over the years, it has never vanished.
The bare facts about the birth of the Ku Klux Klan and its revival half a century later are baffling to most people
today. Little more than a year after it was founded, the secret society thundered across the war-torn South,
sabotaged Reconstruction governments and imposed a reign of terror and violence that lasted three or four years.
And then as rapidly as it had spread, the Klan faded into the history books. After World War I a new version of the Klan sputtered to life and brought many parts of the nation under its paralyzing grip of racism and bloodshed. Then, having grown to be a major force for the second time, the Klan again receded into the background. This time it never quite disappeared, but it never again commanded such widespread support. Today it seems incredible that an organization so violent, so opposed to the American principles of justice and equality, could twice in the nation's history have held such power. How did the Ku Klux Klan - one of the nation' first terrorist groups - so instantly seize the South in the aftermath of the Civil War? Why did it so quickly vanish? how could it have risen so rapidly to power in the 1920's and then so rapidly loose that power? And why is this

The Hundred Years War: Trial by Battle
    Jonathan Sumption
    Review date: 11/5/2001
Published: 1990 In England, the Hundred Years' War is chiefly remembered for the victories of Crecy and particularly Agincourt. There was a great deal more to the war - or, more properly speaking, seies of wars - and it had important consequences for the development of both the French and English states, and on the conception of these states by their inhabitants (as immortalised by Shakespeare, Agincourt was still used in Second World War propaganda). Sumption's history of the war, of which this is the first volume, is an old fashined narrative history, if more concerned with matters like finance than earlier or more sketchy descriptions. It assumes a fair amount of knowledge of the generality of medieval history, and concentrates instead on a detailed study of the causes of the war and its earliest phase (this volume, about six hundred pages, only covers the admittedly complex events of the period 1328-1347, along with the background which sets the scene). The major thing which comes across from this particular book is just how difficult medieval administration was. Lack of information meant that governments had little idea what could be afforded by their countries; poor communications made it difficult to gather troops; tax systems in their infancy made it difficult to collect money, especially when military defeat provoked opposition; and France in particular was an extremely complex collection of smaller communities, each with different traditions, laws and privileges (far greater unity was one of the eventual effects of the war), making it impossibly to impose any taxes or conscript armies with any degree of uniformity across the nation.

Intense Nationalistic feeling grew in both England and France
Most of the war was fought on French soil so there were great population and property loses that weakened France for the next hundred years.
England lost territory in France but it allowed the English kings to centralize their power further and concentrate only on the English nobles.
New weapons were introduced which weakened the power of the Knights and the castle thus ensuring the destruction of the feudal system in both England and France.
The system continued in many of the Eastern European region especially Russia but was absent in Spain, Portugal, city-states in Inlay, Prussia, and the Holy Roman Empire. HUNDRED YEARS' WAR (1337-1453). The struggle between France and England called the Hundred Years' War was the longest war in recorded history. It lasted, with some interruptions, through the reigns of five English kings (Edward III to Henry V) and five French kings (Philip VI to Charles VII). The underlying cause of the war lay in the feudal system. Since the time of Henry II the English king had been duke of the great duchy of Guienne in southwest France. For this fief he did homage to the king of France (

George, Ph.D. F ew cities of such youth can claim a history as eventful, significant, and tumultuous as that of Miami. From its beginnings as a tiny settlement along the Miami River to the robust international city of today, Miami has represented for multitudes of new residents a place to begin anew, a gateway to a better tomorrow. And at no time has this been more true than the present. The Beginning The story of Miami begins more than 10,000 years ago with a settlement of Paleo-Indians along the edge of south Biscayne Bay near today’s Charles Deering Estate. Many millennia later, Tequesta Indians entered the lush, subtropical area and built settlements stretching from the Florida Keys to Broward County, with the largest concentrations along the north bank of the Miami River and on Key Biscayne. Like Florida’s other native inhabitants, who numbered more than 350,000 at the time of the Spanish entrada in 1513, the lifestyle of the Tequestas changed radically, and for the worse, following the Spanish arrival. Victims of disease, war and other dislocations, the Tequestas, along with Florida’s other native populations, had virtually vanished 250 years after the entry of the Spanish.

Travelling back in time brings us to the essential task Hydro has taken upon itself, the source of the values Hydro has embraced and the origins of the culture that makes Hydro what it is today. It has been said that our company culture is rooted in its history. So here we present the story of Hydro.
Norsk Hydro is founded and provides the solution to one of the most pressing problems of the day - industrial manufacture of plant nutrients to increase food production throughout the world. Norwegian hydroelectric power, scientific and technological breakthroughs, Swedish, French and German capital, and an entrepreneurial spirit join forces to lead the way for the growth and modernization that developed in Norway after 1905. An international industrial company is born.
