Creating a Hummingbird Garden Habitat
Hummingbird Flowers and Plants
What flowers are good to plant to have hummingbirds visit your flower garden. My mother has an Angles trumpet that she has a hummingbird visit. Are there other flowers I can plant? Thank you for your time.. April 3,1999
A good hummingbird garden takes more than just flowers for the hummingbirds.
Aside from the nectar filled flowers which you will grow, a good hummingbird garden must also consist of an entire habitat for the birds.
  • Make certain that there is always fresh water available for drinking as well as for bathing.
  • Create both sun and shade areas in your hummingbird garden. Hummingbirds need a place in shade to perch as well as to build their nests.
  • Willows and Eucalyptus trees provide nesting materials which your hummingbirds will use, along with bits of leaves, spider webs, moss, and lichens to build their tiny nests.
Hummingbirds must feed 3-5 times per hour and your hummingbirds may become reliant on your garden for it's food, but there may be periods when there are no blossoms from which they can get nectar. It is a good idea to provide hummingbird feeders hung about thirty feet apart throughout your garden for these times. The best color for a feeder is bright red to attract the birds from a distance. Never fill your feeders with anything but sugar-water mix of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Do not use food coloring of any kind, and never, never use honey. (Honey can develop a fungus which can be fatal to hummingbirds)

Fall Is a Great Time to Attract Hummingbirds
Fall is the perfect time to entice one or more of the 21 species of hummingbirds to your yard as they begin their annual southern migration. Ignore the old wives' tale about not feeding hummers in the fall. The birds are programmed to move south when the days get shorter, not when the food supply begins to dwindle. They need to put on extra fat now because they're facing a long rigorous trip south. Most North American hummingbirds are migratory. They overwinter in the south, mostly in Mexico and Central America. They migrate north in spring and make their way back south every fall as daylight hours lessen, temperatures drop and nectar and other food sources begin to dry up. Migration is particularly perilous for the little avian dynamos. Because of their size, metabolism and the extreme distances they have to cover, hummingbirds often face starvation on their journey, sometimes well over 2,000 miles each way. Many hummer species need to pack on fat as a portable energy source and some species actually double their weight in preparation for their flight. Feeding Tips
    • To prepare sugar water for a feeder, mix one part sugar to four parts boiling water. Cool before pouring into your hummingbird feeder. Store the extra mix in your refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Rufous hummingbirds ( Selasphorus rufus ) travel from Mexico to Alaska and back, making the longest bird migration on earth as measured in body lengths. Habitat conversion and fragmentation threaten rufous hummingbird stopover sites along their migratory corridors . Knowledge of migration routing and timing is essential for insuring the persistence of this important pollinator and the pollination services it provides. We identified the locations of rufous hummingbird nectar corridors in northwestern Mexico based on floral distributions and hummingbird behaviors. There are three potential spring (northward) nectar corridors: Foothills Corridor, Plains of Sonora Corridor, and Gulf Coast Corridor. The Foothills Corridor is in tropical deciduous forest and foothills thornscrub between the Sonoran Desert and the Sierra Madre Occidental north almost to the United States border (30º20'N). Miata Wheel Alignment
PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE PAGE before taking the specs to your alignment shop. Even better, print this page and ask the technician to discuss it with you before he starts. A precision 4-wheel alignment is the most important suspension upgrade you can make to a Miata. Without one, you wil not get the performance your Miata can deliver. The factory "alignment" specs have entirely too much ± tolerance, and while every alignment is a compromise, the Mazda specs are biased heavily toward low tire wear on cars that are never driven hard. The large tolerance also makes the dealer's prep job less expensive. The difference can be astonishing. Don't you want your car to behave the same way turning right as it does turning left? If performance doesn't impress you, how about safety? Fortunately, aligning a Miata properly is not difficult for a skilled technician, and is relatively cheap for the benefits gained.
    Miq's alignment specs
While many owners have been happy with Miq Millman's specs on miata.net, I feel that they do not represent the best compromise for street use on street tires, particularly for a daily driver that also gets thrashed on Sundays. I started with a Miq alignment, then varied one parameter at a time until I got the balance I wanted. I don't like toe out, and I think street tires need more negative camber to work properly at comfortable, everyday pressures.

compiled by Stacy Jon Peterson Hummingbirds! If you said that word a few years ago, most folks living east of the Mississippi River would only think "Ruby-throated." However, at least small numbers of several western hummingbird species show up in the eastern US in winter. The most common are Rufous Hummingbirds, with over a thousand now reported annually. Most are seen at feeders after Ruby-throateds have departed, and can occur in ANY eastern state.
If you want to increase the odds of seeing a winter hummingbird, keep fresh nectar (3 or 4:1, water:white table sugar) in at least one feeder all winter. It also helps if your garden is chock full of hummingbird flowers (at least until frost!) and your yard has lots of "cover," such as evergreens, brambles, and thickets.
Don't worry. Leaving feeders out will NOT prevent hummingbirds from migrating. Western hummingbirds do not fly to your home all the way from Idaho, for example, just because your feeder is still out. Feeders simply bring into view some birds that are already in the neighborhood
If you do see an odd hummingbird, or any hummingbird after November 15, please

December 1999 Many people are interested in attracting the colorful and interesting ruby-throated hummingbird to their yards. This article describes the hummingbird and offers suggestions for attracting them. Description: The male ruby-throated hummingbird has a throat patch or gorget that flashes ruby-red, although in some lighting conditions the gorget may appear black. The female lacks a throat patch. Both sexes have metallic green backs and white undersides, and are 3½ inches long. This is the only species of hummingbird that lives and nests east of the Rockies. Migration and Biology: The birds fly north in late February to mid-May, and fly south to their wintering grounds in southern Mexico and Central America in late July to late October. Ruby-throats fly 500 miles nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico during migration. The male breeding territory is about ¼-acre. The nest is located on a small limb 10 to 20 feet above the ground, and can be made of spider and insect silk, plant down, bud scales, and lichens. There are two white, small ½-inch long eggs per nest. The incubation period lasts about two weeks, and there are one or two broods per summer. In the nestling phase a young bird is out of the nest, but fed by parents for about a month. Interesting Facts: Ruby-throats can be detected by the hum of their wings, which beat 78 times per second during regular flight, and up to 200 times per second during a flight display dive. Hummingbirds can fly forward, backward, and even upside down for short periods.

    The Dixie Hummingbirds
The Dixie Hummingbirds are probably the best known of the black gospel quartets, having performed for over 50 years throughout America and Europe. The group was formed in Greenville, South Carolina, by James Davis in 1928, a year before the Great Depression. The members were Barney Gipson (lead), Davis (tenor), Barney Parks (baritone), and J.B. Matterson (bass). In their early teens they sang in the Bethel Church of God in the junior chorus. Soon Fred Owens became the bass and the group became the Sterling High School Quartet. Davis changed the name to the Dixie Hummingbirds. Following local activity, the group went to the National Baptist Convention in Atlanta where they met such top acts of the day as the Heavenly Gospel Singers, THE SWAN SILVERTONES, and Kings of Harmony. The Hummingbirds’ reception there encouraged them to tour.
During the ‘30s the group went through a succession of bass singers until Jimmy Bryant of the Heavenly Gospel Singers joined in 1939, just as the group signed to Decca Records.

January 15, 2004 Contact: Bill Hilton Jr., (803)684-5852, education@hiltonpond.org Winter Hummingbirds: On the Increase in the Eastern U.S.? The number of winter hummingbird sightings east of the Rocky Mountains appears to have increased dramatically over the past decade, but it's hard to say whether there are actually more hummingbirds. Nonetheless, in recent winters, northern states such as New York and Michiganand even Canada!have had their share of vagrant hummers, while southern states have been getting new hummingbird species that had never been recorded there. Although Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) breed across the eastern U.S. east of the Great Plains and in southern Canada, this common summer species disappears from most states in about mid-October when nearly all ruby-throats fly to Mexico or Central America for the cold months. Historically, hummingbird enthusiasts took down their feeders by Halloween, but these days they're leaving up at least one sugar water dispenser so they can spot winter vagrant hummers from the western U.S. The most common winter hummingbird is likely to be the Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus), according to Bill Hilton Jr., executive director of Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History near York SC. Hilton is a hummingbird bander and researcher. Like ruby-throats, Rufous Hummingbirds typically winter in Central Mexico, but he has captured more than a dozen this winter in North and South Carolina.
